  1. Microwave Ovens and wireless backbones on The Joys of Microwaves And Wireless · · Score: 1

We have a site where we're providing wireless to a school. Every day at lunch the site gets knocked out because of the microwaves. This is a timely article for us I'm looking for ways to eliminate the interference.

We know for a fact it's the microwaves since turning them off cleans up the link and turning them on kills it. We've tried changing their positions and replacing some of the older microwaves. It still seems to be a problem. Strangely the micorwave we brought in has no problems but another of the same brand causes problems. Using a spectrum analyzer has also shown the microwaves to be a problem.

Can anyone suggest a way to shield a microwave or otherwise elminate the source of interference?

  2. Find something and improve it on Getting The Most Out Of Co-Op Programs? · · Score: 1

When I was working as a co-op student at a local mill I was doing those grunt jobs and some basic
trouble shooting, they didn't trust me with anything better. One day I saw a really horrific MS Access application, nothing too fancy but I saw several ways to improve it.

I took a chance, fixxed things up and then showed it to management. After the ooing and awing where over they used my program instead of the old one.

From then on I was given other programs to "fix" and several other more exciting projects. I've been working elsewhere for over a year now but they still call from time to time for me to "fix" things.

The first thing I'll say is that everything I'm doing in my current job I didn't learn about in school. :) This includes Unix system administration, Perl/PHP programming, and wireless networking.

Some of my classmates are now Oracle Forms programmers, Technical writers or NT/Novell Administrators.

My advice is study whichever you enjoy more and then take the jobs that will make you well rounded.

I was hired at my last three jobs, not because I knew the technology (I didn't) but because I could problem solve. I learned the technology on the job.

Most employers look for results, they're happy if you solve the problem, they don't usually care HOW you solve it.

I have to agree. I was looking forward to some high class April Fools day jokes. It's sad when our local radio station does a better job. Just for comparison:

We're having a support workers strike at the school district and as such there are no classes.

There was an article in the paper that said students were upset about the number of classes missed and wanted to do something other than summer classes to make up for this. The radio then reported that they'd be having Saturday classes to make up for the lost days.

    1. History of computers

    3. Basic/Advanced Spreadsheets
    4. Basic/Advanced Presentations
    5. Basic/Advanced Database work
    6. Integration between 2-4.
    7. Basic HTML
    8. Some sort of project maybe

I would stay away from things like Unix, Networking etc except at a very very high level. That's assuming you're not teaching a bunch of grade 12 pre-University Computer Science students.

Point 2 could include desktop publishing and 3 could include some accounting or science applications.

The average nongeek student isn't going to care about any form of Unix, my sister uses my Linux box and can't understand why she needs to login to the thing. Remember KISS.

Keep It Simple Stupid. A good thing to teach would be the ablitiy to reason and just to read the damn screen. So few people do that anymore.

People have mentioned football coach history teachers and other similar things. If we valued public school teachers at a similar level to our doctors and lawyers we might have better public schools. Stop and think for a minute about the crap they have to put up with.

My HS Computer Science instructor did what all good teachers do. He inspired me to learn more about computers and programming in general. If it hadn't been for him I don't know what I'd be doing today. He recognized early on that my abilities far outweighed those of any other student in the class and allowed me to persue my own interests rather than be stuck repeating alot of the same stuff I already knew.

He had a natural joy and enthusiasm for the classes he taught. I wish more people had that. I supose you really have to enjoy what you're doing for that to come through.

At the start of first year he asked us, Why we were in CIS. Most of the students, said for the money. At the start of 2nd year, he asked the same question, and no one said money.

Anyway I was addicted. For me it was mudding. I was online every waking moment, if I could get away with it. My worst case was being online from about 9am to 3am the next morning. No breaks.

I'm not exactly sure why I got hooked, maybe it was the game, maybe the people on line but I did get hooked. I recognized really early on I was addicted, even before the term Internet Addiction
was known. At the time I thought I could stop if I just put in the will power to stop. I never stopped. :)

I eventually got kicked out of University and told not to come back for a year or two.

Sometime after getting kicked out things changed. I started spending less and less time on line. I stopped mudding. I think I just outgrew it. I didn't make any consious effort to stop I just stopped.

Now days I like to have internet access and do spend time online but I'm not bothered if I don't have net access. In the old days I would have been crawling the walls within an hour.

  17. These faster release cycles on Taking a look forward: Linux 2.4 · · Score: 2

I haven't heard this idea voiced yet in all the posts so I thought I'd mention it.

Let's say we get clever and start releasing new 2.x versions every 6 months or so. As we do this and as more and more features get added the chance of some serious problem creaping in becomes more and more likely.

Case in point the file system corruption problem that occures in 2.2.10. Maybe the latest prepatch has fixed this.

The other problem I forsee is that having too many major releases of stable kernels, 2.0,2.2,2.4 etc will make it harder for outside companies to support. That is when they're released within a short period of time.

What I personally would like to see is a release cycle with atleast 1 year between releases. This would give more time to iron out wrinkles.
