  1. Imagine... on What's (Still) Wrong With UCITA · · Score: 1

  2. Re:Showgirls effects on Digital SFX Wizard Answers Slashdot Questions · · Score: 1

A lot of effects are done to correct mistakes during production: boom microphones hanging from the top of the screen, tattoos, better clouds, bluer water...it's corrective and not necessarily "on display" by nature.

If we were talking about Debian, I'd absolutely agree. Knowing Mandrake (using Mandrake), and knowing that The Latest Software will be included in the final release, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I didn't mean offence to Will, to set the record straight...just didn't want him to get his hopes up on a quick (or accurate) reply.

I can't believe /. would post what is essentially distro propaganda. Debian may be a nice distro, but it's just one in a group of other nice distros.

The difference being that Debian users often spend much of their spare time making non-Debian users nauseous with their holier-than-thou dribble.

  6. The intersection of FX and virtuality on Talk to a Movie Digital SFX Expert · · Score: 1

I work in the film industry, and one thing that I've been noticing (although, to think more about it, it's not necessarily a recent trend) is the reliance upon digital effects/3D animation in the minds of producers/writers when preparing projects.
While there is nothing inherently bad about this, it unfortunately has the effect of producing many films (and TV shows) that look like nothing more than demo reels for FX companies: bereft of capable stories, developed characters, themes, etc.
Part of the problem - as I see it - is the intersection between the technical virtuality of the FX and the more ephemeral virtuality of the story itself. It seems to me that the aesthetic of the former is often misunderstood as being a replacement for the latter.
What are your thoughts on how a balance between these two virtual realities can be maintained?

    Cheers.

I think Mandy will fare well, since the apps/software is already bundled. Unlike Lindows, people won't need to go online to download their applications to get things going.

  15. There is a cut-off point on Is There Such a Thing as "Too User Friendly"? · · Score: 1
I think there is a cut-off point for designers of User Interfaces. I just happen to believe that - in North American at least - the tendency of the larger (aka more financially liable) companies is to mark the cut-off point with an offer of a dumbed-down interface (that, perhaps to some is not "dubed-down", but downright handy). I feel that if UI designers offer an advanced "skin" for us power-users and a Fisher Price "skin" for the beginners, that's certainly fine with me.

It's the matter of choice that I appreciate.

  21. There is no "liberal bias", just plain ol' bias on Tragedy, Media and Marketing · · Score: 1

The inherent fault of Bernard Goldberg's book is his accusation of "liberal bias" which is tragically narrow-minded (not to mention ironically partisan). Journalists who push certain issues, such as campaign finance reform etc., don't do so under the banner of anything other than:

    1. Saving their ass.
    2. Getting a promotion.
    3. Making money for their organization/themselves.

To say that it's in the name of "liberal bias" is to resort to silly conspiracy theories that only undermine what should've been the point of this book (though if it was the point, it would've had to have been written by someone else): self-interest.
