which charity? not a religious based one? i mean, you see the inherent problem with letting some xtian fundies take over libraries? or how about wiccans? or muslims?
they've all got charities. do you think that you would get a content-neutral view?
or maybe we could have them sponsored by big companioes - like McD's or Pepsi or ExxonMobil. i mean - none of them would have an agenda, right?
oh, i'd like to let you say that in a room full of real-live educated librarians. they'd tear you an intellectual asshole.
seriously - these people went into tending to books because they love knowledge. they are incredibly well educated, well read, and voracious supporters of free speech and liberty.
basically, the welfare system is an insurance policy against revolution.
That is, you are paying the poor so that they are able to live well enough so that they will not revolt.
As a policy, it is necessary to put in a "floor", or, a safety net, to which we agree, that as a society we will not let anyone in our society live below.
It doesnt need to be particularly comfortable, it just needs to be enough to survive in a reasonable manner. if the services provided allow people to live in public housing, collecting welfare, unemployment, and all they do is drink 40's on their porch all day, then what the hell - at least they aint plotting a violent revolution.
really, the life of welfare people isnt exactly peaches and cream.
local libraries are funded in an appropriate manner. giving them over to a "free market" system is foolish, and will end up with decreased services for all.
repeat after me - the "free" market does not solve all of societies ills. there are many functions and services that would deteriorate if given over to teh "free" market.
and the rest of us think your a bunch of whiny assholes who dont give a shit about anything other than your pocket book.
yes virginia, the idea of having a publicly funded library systems goes back to the days of the founding fathers - ben franklin specifically.
and yes, they should be publicly funded.
but, please continue being a barbaric asshole who doesnt want to support the betterment of society. i mean - if people read books, then they could actually think for themselves, and couldnt fall for the TAXES BAD bullshit.
its not just electronics, its also items that are *supposed* to be truly durable - like new home construction.
i've just bought a 97 year old house, and let me tell you - THEY DONT MAKE THEM LIKE THIS ANYMORE. I've got a 4x4 hunk of concrete as my main support, double joists, plaster walls, extra-heavy wastewater pipes, etc etc etc...
i did get quite lucky though, as the gentleman i bought it from was an Ind. Eng. - and its quite interesting how well us engineers take care of their homes:-) he installed a dual zone forced air heating system (w/2 boilers), central ac, whole house fan, upgraded electric...
but the point is - newer construction doesnt really hold a candle to this type of construction. a friend of mine owns a 30 year old house, and i dont know if i trust it - its still settling, the joists look suspect, and the walls are paper thin.

so, whats broken with public libraries that we need to go to a new model?

obviously you dont know any librarians.

you know, some of us believe in properly funding public goods such as libraries, police adn education.
USR was hardly the low price point...
now, the sportster, or the supra's... those were the cheap ones...
try this
funny what you get when a hyperactive mexican designs the whole damn system.
funny what happens when you hire the head VAX/VMS dude to head your "new technology" team...
there is no shortage in canada though, which leads me to believe that teh drug companies are engaging in price gouging in the US.
its not subsidized, its price-controlled.
tell me, why should americans foot the research bill , in the form of federal grants, and then get fucked with the drug prices?
i can understand the logic there, seeing how box-cutters and flight sims are banned WMD's and all...
havent you gone deaf from your own cognitive dissonance yet?
and what, exactly, did Saddam Hussein have to do with 9/11?

err... the fighting ended in iraq? when was that?
sorry... 8 years, not nine :-)
it depends on when you start the "beginning" of the vietnam war. i'm counting from 1957-1964 - 401 in that time.
1965 the heavy shit began.
so, sorry - i was off by one year.
people are about to buy less powerful boxes that are easier to manage, and show a significantly lower TCO.
count on it.
please cite your first point.
for the record, this war is already at the total death toll of the first 9 years of vietnam.
lying under oath in a civil suit, about an unrelated blowjob.
*perjury trap* is what this would be called.
>Every news story about Iraq tends to show the
>negative (the few positive ones seem to be
>forced and played down).
thats because there are a lot more negative things coming out of iraq than positive.
sure, we opened some schools - that was last week. we lose over a soldier a day, everyday.
which do you report? do you say - a soldier has been killed, but look at the schools we opened?
the iraw war is going horribly badly, and the US population is not getting close to the truth.
let me state why Al Gore lost - or even let it be so close that he had it stolen:
he shunned Bill Clinton.
you're grossly overestimating the intelligence of the typical fox news viewer.
