    WWII is the *only* case where war helped the economy.

    Christ, the economy was so bad then, dieing in a foxhole in france was a good way to put food on the table for your family back home.

    WWII is an exception.

    The Korean war hurt the economy.

    The VIetnam war hurt the economy.

    The Gulf war hurt the economy.

    Therefore, I can conclude that teh "war helps the economy" talking point is false, except when we have 20% unemployment, and undergo a MASSIVE mobilization and conversion to a command economy.

    Fortran and Cobol are application languages, like VB.

    C/C++ are system languages.

    huge difference.

    you arent about to write a video driver in VB, Cobol or Fortran. Nor C#, Java or Delphi.

    C/C++ are not going anywhere anytime soon.

    please show me statistics that demonstrate economic growth as a result of fighting a war.

    you will find that there is only one case of a war helping the economy, and that is WWII, and incidentally, immediately after the war we had another depression, during eisenhower.

    every other war hurt the economy.

    you are espousing a fallacy.

    i never really understood the reason to move the joystick from the predominantly strong hand in most people, to the weak hand...

    I always thought that it required far greater dexterity to manipulate a joystick than to mash buttons...

    frankly, i think its why my arcade and console game plaing has dwindled.

    do you have any idea how hard it was to go from that configuration to the nintendo-led joystick on the left, buttons on the right?

    this is exactly what i was saying...

    i think that we may be arguing the same point here...

    as for only getting ... a near 9% gross margin on a $11 cost cd selling for $12 - I would go out on a limb and say that the store would actually lose money on that transaction once all other costs are factored in.

    really? i think that you are going to have to expand on that.

    THere was a court fight over this exact practice, where the RIAA banned large distributers from selling below cost, and was overturned by the courts in the last year.

    seriously, check out the Circuit City flyer this week - I guarantee that there will be 10-15 new release CD's on sale for about $12 - loss leaders to get you in the store.

    i'll look for relevant articles, though...

    best buy, and circuit city generally have great deals on CD's - they use them as "loss leaders" to get you into the store, selling the CD's often belown price.

    you havent been paying attention to china then.

    china has stabilized their command-economy and is now moving into capitalist mode. (note i *never* said "communist")

    and their national companies are bigger, meaner, more effecient, *and* more corrupt than our multi-nationals.

    if they unleash that, we should all learn mandarin.
