  1. Algorithm for doing reviews on The Cluetrain Manifesto · · Score: 1

Algo for getting the most out of reviews

    1. Read the first few paras till you come to know the subject. If you don't like the subject go to 100.

    2. Read the last para and chk out the conclusion. If you trust the author and the conclusion is bad got to 100.

    3. Chk the size of the review..if it is short enough read it, and go to 5.

    4. (REview is too frickin long case) Read the user comments and see if they agree with the reviewer. If the comments agree with the conclusion ... then depending on hum much you liked the subject you will read the review.

    5. goto 101

    6. If you do not trust trust the author but you are really interested, go to other sites (amazon? is the best) for more reviews and go to 101 else go to 100.

  11. Challenges for searching the web..... on Is the Internet Becoming Unsearchable? · · Score: 2

I have been thinking about the working of a search engine lately and this post just comes at the right time.

Some of the challanges which will be faced for search the web in the future will be :

    1. Displaying matching URLs as well as links which match the type of content. This is important. If I search for "throat infection" on a search engine..apart from the pages which mention "throat infection" ..the web engine should give me a link to drkoop.com, webmd.com (AFAIK, these sites do not allow search engines to copy their content) and so on.
Search engines will have to maintain huge databases linking words to categories. And with the proliferation of hte internet the number of sites carrying content and disallowing search engines is going to increase. Search engines need a intelligent way to get around this.

    2. Search engines will need "help" users with their searches. For example if I just search for "throat" the search engine should have a helper section where it can ask me more...whether I am searching for "throat infection" or "study off throat" and so on.

    3. Search assisted by humans. This is also one of the concepts picking up these days. Basically you submit a question and there will be some person searching the web, and you will get you answer in a few hours/days. Chk out www.xpertsite.com.

    4. Tools for better maintenance of bookmarks. I for one usually bookmark all relevant stuff and then I spend a full weekend arranging them so that I can find the relevant stuff from the bookmarks quickly. The current bookmarking scheme is very primitive causing a lot of users to "reinvent teh wheel" (searching for URLs which are already bookmarked).

    Phew!

I'll jot down more thoughts later. Gotta work now.

Software industryis different. S/w engg never write s/w without bugs. Try to find out how many people today are still fixing bugs and enhancing software in the 1970's and 80's. You will be surprised. The problem with this industry is that there is no good proven quality standards being followed. More than 50% jobs today are maintenance related.

If you want to survive in this industry you have to be on the bleeding edge of technology. Good enggs just cannot afford to do a 9-5 job and go home , They have to do extra reading to keep up with the new technology. People who dont keep up with technology are the ones who will bet left behind. I usually classify technology in two branches :

    - Hard. This one takes a lot of time to learn and you got to have solid grasp of concepts to be working in this area. example writing protocol software, OS's etc.

    - Soft. This one is easy to leanr. You dont really need a BS degree. A six month course is all that you need. This technology can get outdated easily..but it is also easy to learn similar new soft tech existing at that point in time. example html, perl etc.

I havent got time to organize my thoughts...but a last thought is..if we really predict that the world is going to see major technological advances next century and I am sure there will be many related to new internet technologies (access, interface) I dont really see a point where the glut os s/w engg will end.
