Let me just add, warmed up cold coffee which wasn't that great to start with. I suppose maybe it's okay if you just want the caffeinne kick, but I'd suggest chewing Pro Plus as the more desirable alternative:)
I have money. I want to give it to you, in return for downloadable episodes of TV shows I like. Or how about free downloadable episodes with adverts in?
The MPAA/RIAA must be killing themselves laughing. Whether they took down the sites or not, Slashdot is now making their job of tracking down the smaller sites trivial...
http://distsyst.dcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/btpaper.pdf Covers a few of the same things, but is a server-side analysis across a large number of torrents, for a long period of time.
As a web application developer, this is one of those things that drives me nuts. So many sites abuse Javascript, that everyone turns it off. You can do some great stuff with Javascript (http://www.activewidgets.com/ makes a good example), but all everyone sees is the bad side.
Personally, I'd love to see site by site rules on whether Javascript can be used, like we do with cookes (also a great tool that's been horribly misused).
I'd just like to second this; it takes me a _lot_ longer to read a poorly put together e-mail, than one with good grammar and punctuation. More than a few times I've had to send back "What do you mean?" e-mails!
Something I wish Internet advertisers would realise is that I'm really unlikely to click their link right there and then (with the exception of on-topic adverts when I'm doing a search). However, I tend to remember seeing these adverts, and will frequently go search for an advert I saw a while ago, weeks or months later.
Same for TV, unless I'm the only one who doesn't immediately leap from their chair and go buy something that interests me?
1. What proportion of file sharers are students? What proportion of these lawsuits are against students? Is there a massive mis-match between these two figures? I'm only worried if the answer is "Yes".
2. Could/. please decide whether the RIAA produces rubbish, or not? If it is, why does everyone keep downloading it?
3. Music is not essential to your existance. If you can't afford it, don't buy it, it won't kill you. In particular, if both sales and piracy drop, maybe they'll finally have to accept they're doing something wrong. I'm sure someone can also point out a site with good legal MP3s? Oh, and I can highly recommend this new-fangled "radio" invention...
4. To the people complaining that they're prosecuting people who can't afford to fight the cases, maybe this is more of a problem with the legal system in general? Are you suggesting instead that people shouldn't be prosecuted for crimes, if they can't afford to hire expensive lawyers? Or maybe we should stop fining students for speeding, because they're poor...
4b. Is anyone actually claiming these people have not been illegally copying music? If so, great, love to hear from you.
If not, is anyone claiming these students didn't know it was illegal? If so, maybe we should stop criticising the RIAA/MPAA's attempts to bring in more widespread copyright education?
5. Now, if anyone needs me I'll be hiding behind this lump of asbestos...
Y'see, I've always liked the idea of seperate limited-time servers for MMORPGs. Something in the region of 40 hours/month would suit me, but have characters on the server progress much faster.
Those of you with time to burn can go play the slow servers, those of us trying to work, have a life, and play MMORPGs can play on the fast servers (and 40 hours/month is probably more time than I'd be able to easily free up, anyway).
Unfortunately, the wanting to play continously group apparently hates this idea, and also apparently are where most of the money is. Ah well...
This is the same reason I rarely play multiplayer games (Quake, UT, etc.) over the Internet. Having neither the time or desire to polish my shooting people in the head skills to near-perfection, I'm essentially cannon-fodder to other players. While not quite bad enough to be the worst in a server, I'm frequently in the bottom 2-3.
So I'll be over here with my single player games and LAN parties against my not-obsessively playing friends:)
I must genuinely be the only person on the planet who doesn't wander around going "Hey, wish I could get a photo of that". I carry a digital camera (a very small digital camera, I might add) to parties and events, and even then don't take that many photos, and it's not unusual for me not to take any.
Would either side care to produce some figures for how much CO2 humanity generates, ideally broken down into causes, plus some figures on how much CO2 was in the atmosphere anyway (earliest reliable measurement you can find will do)?
First of all, statistics suggest you should be a lot more worried about being in a car crash than being injured/killed by terrorists. Well, I am, anyway.
Secondly, and more importantly, a lack of good ideas doesn't mean we should start implementing bad ideas instead!
How on earth anyone ever came to these conclusions (you're hardly the first person to say that), I'll never know.
Western Digital quotes nearly power consumption for their drives, when reading or idle, although that figure drops to about 1/20 if the drive is in sleep mode:
However, your GPU is likely to be the biggest problem, as I'm unaware of them having a sleep mode (although maybe they do, anyone know?), leaving their consumption at half peak:
What this all means is that it's worth turning your computer off for any period of time longer than your start-up time, instead of letting it idle. If you put it to sleep, that figure becomes twenty times the startup time. For me, that's less than 20 minutes, not the 8+ hours I sleep for.
Case in point: After a week away from work, I'm generally kinda bored. After two weeks, I'm beginning to creep into the office while no-one's looking...
Seriously, I enjoy what I do, and it gives my life real structure; if someone gave me a million, great, I could finally buy a house, but I wouldn't quit my job.
I think this is a good point. I love LCDs, but that's because I live in a small flat (if laptops were good at gaming, I wouldn't even have a full size PC, to save space).
[Insert rant about the UK housing market and, despite working full time as a developer, having to share a 2 bedroom flat to make ends meet]
I haven't replaced the TV yet, but that's more because I don't watch enough TV to make it worthwhile, than anything else.
Back to the topic at hand, if the space isn't important to you, there's very little reason to change from CRT to LCD (I happen to think they're more aesthetically pleasing, but that's hardly a reason).
This is a real nuisance around here, especially as a pedestrian. There's a lot of times I'll be trying to cross one side of a cross-roads, and a car will be on the other side, as if it's coming straight over. I can try running for it, knowing that most cars turn left or right at that crossroad, or I can wait. If they'd just flick that little switch, I'd know, and wouldn't waste ages waiting for cars which aren't coming this way, anyway.
Sure, Linux is on the rise, but aren't there still a lot more OS X systems than Linux? Could be my memory is wrong, but I'd have figured OS X will see a rise in virii first...
Let me just add, warmed up cold coffee which wasn't that great to start with. I suppose maybe it's okay if you just want the caffeinne kick, but I'd suggest chewing Pro Plus as the more desirable alternative :)

What really gets to me, is I've never wanted to close all other tabs. Ever. My life would be so much simpler if they just took the option out.
Has anyone actually ever used it?
Have zero, and happy to stay that way. This thread is _great_ for tips on causing your own infertility :)

I think making file sharing legal is a bad idea, but I'm 100% behind your method of implementing it :)

Can I just say, I'm sympathetic, but electronics have had their warranties voided if you open them up for as long as I can remember...

Would "Find me a girlfriend" be stretching the lonely-geek joke too far?

Can we comprimise on, if I set it to silent, and leave to take the call, I can come back in afterwards?
Wonderful, thankyou, if I hadn't already commented on this thread I'd mod you up!

Me me me me me me! I used some old command line zip tool until XP came along, and appears to have zip handling stuff built in...
Then again, I don't work on Windows. I work on OS X, and play games on Windows (and just to short cut the first reply, yes I do buy all my games).
