  1. Re:Why oh God Why on Syllable - The Little OS with a Big Future? · · Score: 5, Informative

(I'm a member of the Syllable community.)

We are not trying to bridge any supposed gap between Linux and Windows. We're dissatisfied with Windows as a desktop OS, and we're dissatisfied with Linux as a desktop OS. So, we're working on a completely different OS that meets our needs.

We do not expect every modern home user to use Syllable.

I honestly find the final argument in thebdj's post humorous. It reminds me of the "Everything that can be invented, has been invented" argument, and reminds me of the arguments against Linux five to ten years ago, which suggested that Windows and MacOS were "enough."

thedbj's reading an awful lot into the Syllable project that simply isn't there. When I look at the tremendous amount of work being put into Syllable for such little reward, the idea that we're making Syllable simply to be cool is ludicrous.

Don't shoot down the bill and/or its author merely because he's adding a rider. This is done in practically every other bill out there; little bits added onto the end because the main point is likely to succeed.

Looks like a pretty good bill, to me. Imperfect, but I'll live with that.

I think you're reading a bit too much into it.

News stories are often inaccurate, and it looks like this one is. Note that none of Lucas' lawyers say "We're going to immediately nail ISP's if they carry this." The story was merely explaining some of the law, and didn't explain it fully (big surprise).

IOW, I don't think you should judge the lawyers' actions without them having made any actions.

Well, for one thing, yes journalists try to sell papers. I mean, we are talking about business to a certain extent.

For another, I think he was providing useful information. He reviewed a product, then got a *lot* of feedback on his use of that product, some of it useful suggestions (using PartitionMagic, frex). He thought it would be interesting to remark on other people's suggestions.

Not to mention the fact that he does write, on the whole, an opinion column. When lots of people disagree with his opinion, then that's worth discussing.

    IMHO, YMMV, etc.
