Slashdot Title: Studies Say Video Games Increase Violent Behavior

"The studies show a relationship between violent and aggressive behavior and video game playing."

It has already been pointed out that this study is about a correlation between video-game playing and violent behaviour. However, the media's need to sell advertising (and Slashdot's too??) will probably result in article titles like the Slashdot title above, and John Q. Public will be duped again by weasel words and false reporting. (Not that JQP is all that bright in the first place if he is suckered in by this stuff.)

People with violent-behaviour problems probably also have attention-deficit/impulse-control problems and probably order out for pizza at a statisitically significantly higher rate since they don't have the patience to make their own meals. Therefore, eating pizza causes violent behaviour and PIZZA MUST BE BANNED IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN!!

  4. It's just business on Proprietary Extension to Kerberos in W2K · · Score: 1

This is just the way that Microsoft operates. Adhearing to open standards means creating a commodity product, and commodity products are nowhere near as profitable as owning a de-facto standard. Also, commodity products create a level playing field, and Microsoft isn't particularly competitive on a level playing field, and they are well aware of this.

Frankly, I'm surprised that they chose to start with an open standard rather than starting with a completely proprietary standard, as they would be able to lock out competitors longer with the latter. Of course, this way they get to leverege the work done by the Kerberos people and are able to feign compliance with a recognized and (heretofore) respected standard.

I'm not an expert on business computing, but it seems to me that Sun should be reaching the end of its rope within the next couple years. As Linux matures, CIOs will be saying, "Hmmm, I can go with SPARC/Solaris and have a good system, or I can go with Intel(etc.)/Linux and have a system that's _almost_ as reliable, probably faster, and costs 1/5 as much.
