But think about it. "They" (whoever "they" are) have just struck a horrific blow to the US people and the world economy, using hijacked domestic flights as a weapon. Does anybody really think that this particular weapon will ever be used again? Yes, this is certainly an act of war, but it's just as certain that the next blow won't come from an airplane. We can protect the airports and put guards on the flights if we like, but I don't think it'll matter.
David Stanley has never been anything remotely resembling a preacher. He's never served as a pastor, never had a church, never had anything remotely resembling a ministry, never PREACHED, fer crying out loud. His grandfather is a respected pastor and elder, and his father has spent a lifetime serving in a church that he built. David, on the other hand, has never been anything at all but a con man. A very gifted one, granted. He's a guy who took the gifts that God created him with, and perverted them. Blech.
Can we try a little harder to avoid knee-jerk Christian bashing, please?
Okay, so here I am, just getting a startup going around a product that I'm developing. I like the idea of Open Source very much. And you tell me that in order to do the Right Thing, I have to basically doom my company - that I have a choice between closed source == making money, and open source == going bankrupt?
There are some of us out here who WANT to do this right. I'm not willing to live in a tent to write software. Give us a valid Open Source business model with a piece of software that we wrote in the middle of it, and we'll go for it. You don't have to "take some power back" from us. We'll GIVE it to you - we WANT to give it to you - if you can tell us how, in a way that we can live with.
Just an aside here.. the article doesn't say that it's illegal to import the PS2. It says that it's against Japanese law to bring one outside Japan. I presume that it's fine and dandy with the US or most other governments to bring one in...
I'm finding this discussion at least as interesting as the original article! I went through the same process that most of you did. I went "Oh no, that's awful!" and clicked through and read the article, then went "Now wait a minute..." and headed here to post... What I expected to find, honestly, was a lot of knee-jerk "Yeah, those small town slime! How dare they!" But instead, I found a thoughtful, coherent presentation of the issues, AND a meta discussion about perhaps adding moderation to article selection to prevent future mishaps!
IMHO, the discussion here reflects a real maturity in the Slashdot community. I'm impressed! I'm not sure how you measure the relative strength and health of an online community. I'm not even sure that strength and health are the right things to measure. But I'm definitely encouraged by what I see here.
