I used to live with a dude who was going for his PhD in Biology. His research was something related to this healing of optic nerves. He would take all these frogs and chop their optic nerves in different locations and then get them to somehow heal. The problem was, if he chopped the nerves in certain places, the nerves would heal incorrectly... the left eye's nerve would connect to the right's and vice versa. So then they would do these experiments to see if the frog could adjust to his new wiring. I learned a lot about the stock market from my first job out of school. When I first started I didn't know what questions to ask and I didn't really know the value of the options. Since then, my first company has IPO'd at 12, jumped to 52, and now sits at about 2. (My options were issued at 2.50, so I let them expire recently) The odd thing is that many people who stayed at that company STILL stay there trying to make a fortune on their options! This boggles my mind. If you have faith in the company, then go buy some shares at 2 and you'll be better off than owning a 2.50 option! Or, go buy options that are traded publicly for an even better deal!
Another sort of confusion that occurs with pre-IPO options is due to the fact that many people don't ask 3 simple questions when granted their optins.
1 - What was the market cap of the company at the time the options were valued?
2 - What is the current market cap of the company?
3 - How many total shares/options has the company issued?
You're allowed to ask these questions!!!
With the answers to these questions you can calculate the % of the company that you could potentially own if you exercise your options. Then you multiply this percentage times a market cap to figure out the value of your options. You can also predict the future value of your options if you have an estimate of what you expect the future market cap to be.
Not asking these questions is the same as this sort of job offer:
"We'd like to offer you a job."
ok, what will you pay me?

Free software burning out completely? I think some of the newer folks may be forgetting the fact that we didn't need dozens of multi-billion dollar companies to develop most of the free software we use today. We didn't need them before, it was nice to have some dedicated folks help out with the initiative while they were able to, but we'll manage without them again if/when we need to. The most likely change is going to be a considerably scaled back contribution from large businesses to free software. (At least in the short term)
Think about it this way... in the 30's when the economy wasn't looking so bright, some folks came up with the New Deal to put people to work building American infrastructure. It was a major investment into things we thought we could make good use of in the future, such as new highways, dams, etc...
Free software development is a major investment in future GLOBAL productivity. I keep thinking back to an article in wired I read about a year ago. What do you think is going to happen when China becomes more modernized and all of a sudden there are a billion or so new people looking for affordable software to build businesses on? (or to more accurately steer their planes into ours) You think they're going to be willing or able to spend a few months of salary each to buy MS software? Free software has and will continue lowering the entry cost of business.
This is actually the 3rd attempt at building these telescopes... the first set of telescopes were built in a swamp. These telescopes quickly sank into the swamp. The second one was built on top of the first. It burnt down, fell over, then sank into the swamp.
By this same argument... I'm going to conclude that Kentucky surely does not exist since I haven't yet ever met someone from there.

Obviously you can't build anything hi-tech like this in West Virginia... all the hillbilly natives there wouldn't be able to stop poking it with sticks wonderin' what da heck is that there thang.
For this to work, we'd need to build a GIANT mirror about 40 million light years away. Oh, and if you want to look at dinosaurs, someone would have needed to build this mirror 40 million years ago. I guess we could blame those slack-off primates for not getting this project rolling back then.
Actually, we haven't even been able to SEE these giant planets. We know they are there by watching how stars wiggle back and forth as they get pulled by large planets orbiting them. The other method used to detect extra-solar planets has been to look for large planets crossing directly in front of their stars... this causes a periodic dimming in the light reaching our telescopes. But by no means have we ever been able to SEE these planets.

I used to live with a dude who was going for his PhD in Biology. His research was something related to this healing of optic nerves. He would take all these frogs and chop their optic nerves in different locations and then get them to somehow heal. The problem was, if he chopped the nerves in certain places, the nerves would heal incorrectly... the left eye's nerve would connect to the right's and vice versa. So then they would do these experiments to see if the frog could adjust to his new wiring. The funniest one would be to take one of these frogs, and put some food (a fly) in front of it, slightly off-center to the left for example. Since the frogs vision was reversed, the frog would hop to its right to try to get the food. I don't think any of them ever learned how to catch the fly after they were rewired.
