Advertisers and marketing types are overjoyed when you actually believe their product will get you chicks, make your life more fun, and increase your popularity... Why are they suddenly suprised then when they say they are giving away a harrier jet and someone believes them?
I haven't seen the add, so I can't really comment much on how obvious it was as a joke. But I see this as those marketing pukes getting their just deserts.
Heh, they wanted dumb unquestioning americans to consume their goods... Congratulations, you've got them now.
I think that key linux personalities will move on. Not because they must remain 'alternative' and Linux is too 'mainstream', but because these people are into working on the bleeding edge of technology; when linux becomes the defacto desktop operating system it will no longer be that bleeding edge.. It will be the standard.
I don't think this will be the 'end of linux', just perhaps a shuffling of the deck. I imagine we will also see a slew of really cool new projects emerge, and likely not in the OS realm. So I think this change is to be expected and will even benefit the Free Software/Open Source community.
You may lose some to the 'its not cool to be mainstream', but these won't be the people who contributed in any meaningful way anyhow.
Bundle it with the OS.. and give it away for free. We haven't seen this before. Those guys up in redmond must work pretty hard to come up with innovations like that.
Send what you want... Chances are some script kiddie is running a hacked SETI@51Pegasi client and when he recieves the 'Sol' block will just send faked results to increase his keyrate.
Even if the results werent faked. Given the content of the messages it would still result in 'no inteligent life found'.
Then again, perhaps we'll be visited by aliens.. "Would you like us to take you to our leaders?" "no, we're here to GET $$$$$$ TODAY and see HOT RAW SEX."
Adding layers of middle management is a good solution, see what its done for them in the last couple of years.. Get to hiring those pointy haired boss types. And if you go over personell budget? Fire some engineers and replace them with contractors!
(If you dont get the joke: SGI has the largest percentage of middle management compared to the rest of the tech industry and silicon valley)
Why is it when it comes to spending money I have I have to be 'protected from myself', but when I'd like to spend money I don't have thats just peachy keen?
So the government or some regulatory body wants to keep me from participating in an IPO of a company I think is great.. I am supposed to have years of experience, and have buckets of money in case my investment goes poorly.
But in our society its perfectly OK for me, and made downright easy, to go out get a credit card and max it out on a home entertainment system and whatever other cruft I want? Nevermind if this consumer debt overwelms my income and I can no longer pay my bills.
I find it funny that those who responded that we should be restricted from pariticpating ask 'if you loose it all how will you pay off your loans?'. It's funny we live in a society that expects us to owe more than we make. I think most of us have jobs which pay the bills every month, if I lost every penny of savings I had tommorow I'd still have income and could still pay rent.
And as for me, I got rid of all my credit cards, and paying them off was painful but I feel good that I did it. My bank checkcard does me fine.
I changed my profile... It was so sad, uncle john dying in that tragic plane crash; but the money he left me changed my financial status. *grin*
Anyway, max everything out and you'll get in. Buckets of Money: good, Experience: good, Lots of investment objectives: good, Affiliations with brokers/bankers/redhatters: bad.
I hope they never use these numbers to try to profile open source developers.. Writing free software will turn out to be the most lucrative profession in america. *laugh*

PS: The beeping I heard while they were taking my order was probably an indication of the call being recorded. They are doing serious CYA; so don't even think of blaming E*trade when you loose your shirt. And I wouldn't "stretch the truth" when it comes to family being affiliated with the IPO, I think you could end up in deep trouble with the law that way.
Duh. You don't buy shares on the IPO day. Thats moronic. However if you get a chance to buy the shares at the offer price (in the case of MP3 I think it was around ~24) before they go public then its a great deal. In this case those who got in on MP3.com at the IPO price are still close to doubling their money.
_That_ is what we are talking about here for redhat.
I got a letter. I sent E*trade two thousand of my dollars. I got denied by E*trade to participate.
It makes me wonder if I should have been day trading rather than working on software for the good of the community... Well not really, I know where my heart is.
This looks like old men and their old money, the haves and the have-nots. The wealthy in this country ensuring only they can participate in making more wealth, in the name of 'protecting us poor shmucks from ourselves'.
I don't remember any questions regarding how much experience we had in the industry in which Redhat operates, yet this seems to me just as important to know the difference between the GPL and the EULA as it is to know the difference between a short and a margin.
I do not blame Redhat, and I still plan to buy their stock and hold it. Just give it a few days to settle down to a little over double the offer price. I'll still make a ton of money, although it may be 10X rather than 20X. *grin*
As for E*trade, I'll be closing my account and transferring my funds back into my Datek account. Given the stringent requirements and the targeted community (open source developers, not known for their affinity to stock trading) it was downright underhanded for E*trade to require submission of funds before allowing access to the elegibility profile. I'm just glad I didn't sell any of my current positions to get in on this.

PS: If you've been denied access to the IPO but still itching to participate, according to the IPO elegability FAQ:
"If you have more than one account at E*TRADE, you can select another account to participate in the public offering and submit an eligibility profile for that account"
So, close your account, and re-open a new one immediately, then tell them you have a million in liquid assets, been trading options stocks mutual funds and IPO's since you were three, you make over 200,000 a year and your looking for everything from agressive growth to capital preservation. That should get you by.
Linux Router Project supports traffic shaping, although I've yet to set it up. If the breezecom routers dont do it you may be able to build a Linux router that'll traffic shape and do wireless to 2megabit too. see the Linux Wireless Router Howto
This may also be a cheap solution to some of the other replyers who were interested in wireless routers if your into DIY!
Speaking as a UNIX SA, and a former head SA of an ISP, I couldn't imagine running a service without one.
For some ungodly reason, people have to be told that they can't send 'get rich quick' mails to millions of people, that they aren't allowed to use their shell account to pingflood other internet users, and that they are not permitted to fill their home directory with gigs of warez and give their login to everyone on IRC.
If you terminated the account of someone who just finished spamming half a million internet users and you did not have an AUP in place the spamming user could SUE you for disconnecting his service.
AUP's protect both who run the system and those who use it from those who abuse it.
They'll just tell us they are doing it to stop terorism, child pornography, second-hand smoking; or use the latest excuse to take our rights.. school shootings.
The american public will be more than happy then to give up their rights, so the government can _protect_ them. Just as long as they don't interupt the sitcoms or football games to do it.
It was a few months ago, may have even been here (on slashdot). The monitor has little polarized 'fins' much like modern trafic lights or 'walk/dont walk' signs; each eye can only see the image from the 'fins' polarized for it so each eye sees a different image and you've got 3d. It also seemed the process for creating these was afordable and the technology works with LCD screens.
Can anyone mirror this windows2000test site on a Linux box? It never seems this NT site is up and running.
*snicker*
