I just investigated this as well for my company. While GPG seems to be technically superior from a command line point of view it sucks from a gui point of view on windows. The NAI version has a very good gui config tool, and great integration into outlook. I found this site http://www3.gdata.de/gpg/ which offers similar gui integration into outlook and a gui config tool, but the NAI version works and looks better IMHO.
Time after Time over the past serveral years issues such as the dmca and other laws have passed congress because big business has the biggest say in goverment based on the contributions it provides. Perhaps it is time that the Geeks of the US stand up and begin to lobby along with them. There are millions of us (600k+ slashdot users alone). If everyone gave 10-20 dollars a year we could influence a lot of votes and really get our voice heard in congress. Who doesn't oppose the DMCA? Who isnt going to oppose the sssca? Everyone says.. send email/faxes/hand written letters, those will solve our problems. Well so far, we have lost everytime. We need to begin lobbying! Who is interested in setting up a lobby to influence congress? Yes the EFF is great for fighting legal issues.. but they are not a lobbying org. We need to fight these laws before they are enacted.
The are located right across the parkng lot.
They have been testing this engine thing for years
in many different cars.. even Suv's. Its totally silent at low speed since it runs off batteries.. once it runs out of juice or needs more horsepower the very small engine kicks on to power the electic system. Its realy wierd seeing a suv moving across the parking lot totally silent. Suposedly they also have regenerative braking hooked up as well. Everything runs off this soapy mixture (which I no know as borax.. ) the soapy mixture is put torhough a catalist which generate hydrogen on the fly hence there is no hydrogen stored in the car.
My company uses dozens of these for our remote
colo's. You can via a tcp/ip telnet session shut off one specific outlet or specific groups of outlets or all the outlets. It allows you to label electronically each outlet so you know what you are turning on and off. They cost ~350$ each
I would recommend them.
I just got back from my home inspection on a home I found via the Internet. I feel that sites like realtor.com are great as general guides, but they are definatly NOT up to date at all. Every single house we asked about on those websites was sold, pending sale, or off the market. Looking at those sites give you a really good idea what you can afford and provide realistic expectations for what that price will include however. Looking at those realtor websites gave us a good idea what neighborhoods we should look in/can afford. We actually ended up finding a for sale by owner by checking out the website of our local paper and reading the classifieds via the website (we dont get the daily paper).

Up until 3 months ago.. my company still had
30 or 40 Sun xterms, and tektronix's. We were
paying 30k plus a year to keep them supported.
Thankgod they are quickly being replaced with PC's. Yes.. I need your pity:)
What model xterms and tektronix boxes do
you have and I will see if I can dig up the software for you.
I have nothing but positive things to say
about Dell laptops. I have had this laptop
for over a year now. It has performed flawlessly.
I had to have the keyboard and mouse buttons
replaced a while ago, because I plain wore them out.
They came out 48 hours after my initial call and replaced them in 5
minutes.. no questions asked. Yes the notebook does get a bit warm but
I dont think it would ever catch fire. After a year+ the battery still lasts 3 1/2
hours which is pretty good considering it originally lasted 4 hours. I am very
pleased how dell is handeling this recall. The fact that I am going to
get two batteries for the one I return is amazing. I will definatly buy all
my future laptops from dell and recommend them to all my friends.
Microwave will definatly work over that distance.
You are however going to need a tower on both
sides. Its not gonng be cheap but I have seen ads
for 45 mbit microwave setups. 10km is not a distance you want to try to hack together with
things like 802.11B cards. If this is a buisness
then they should be buying commercial grade products.
I really hate it when a company picks on a simple
opensource project with a very good stance on why it did and should continue to use the name OpenSSH. I was planning on rolling out SSH this summer to over 800 desktops/servers. I guess I will be DEFINATLY going with OpenSSH in light of these developments.
Well I am not sure if this is what you want, but
If you hook up with some of the large US consulting firms you can get an international traveler gig.. were you will work here and there for a few months at a time around the world. I havent done this myself but I have heard about others doing it. IMHO it wouldnt be an easy life.. Travel wears you out after a few months.
Perhaps you should save up a ton of cash
and take 6 months off to travel. It sounds like you dont have things like a mortguage so you could probably save up a ton.
> Quit bitching and accept responsibility for what you have done to yourself.
Noone is bitching that they havent screwed
themselves over by smoking.. Up until 7 days ago
I smoked for 15 years. Yes I knew it was bad, Yes I wanted to quit.. Guess what. Its VERY VERY difficult to do. I have finally done it with the help of Zyban. Many studies say that smoking is more addictive then heroein. Unless you smoke you have no reason to bitch about those ads. They are designed to get smokers to think about quitting and give then some incentive. It amazes me that the cig companies put out ads touting how great they are and how they help charities, yet at the same time they manipulate the levels of nicotine and add in other chemicals to give nic more of a kick to keep people hooked.
Check out this openldap faq entry which should give you a lot of detail on what attributes outlook recognizes and netscape recognizes. As normal.. outlook tends to do its own thing instead of following standards closely.

Anyone doing anything in NJ?

I have been interested in starting up
one of these in central NJ for a while now.
Is anyone interested? I could definatly act
as a node although I have squat for net bandwidth.
Here's what I would like to see in a calendar
program.
1. Free busy capability's
2. Groups of users (so I can schedual a meeting
with say the networking group with one click)
3. Group calendars (a general networking group
calendar that all networking people can
modify).
4. Ldap support (openldap/netscape directory
server).
5. Full featured web based interface
6. Email reminders to users and groups
7. Works with outlook and netscape calendar
clients
8. Ability to view multiple calendars at once..
aka overlay my bosses calendar with a coworker
and mine to see when we have a few moment to
get together.
9. Database backend that supports many different
databases, mysql, postgrees, sybase, oracle.
10. ability for users to have multiple calendars
for project planning.. etc.
11. a nice professional looking interface.
12. a strong permission based system so I can
make some calendars public and others not.
13. Concept of multiple layers of permission.. As
a boss I could see all my employees calendars
regardless of their permissions..etc.
14. Works with apache and netscape enterprise
servers.
I have been seriously looking at netscape calendar
but If I could get an opensource product in house it would be great!
I have been researching this very topic big time for my company. We have about 1 terrabyte of storage needs. That doesnt sound like a lot, but we need IO speed not capacity. Hence I need to spread my storage needs across many storage devices. From the sounds of what you need.. it doesnt look like you really need a storage area network. Sans these days require fiber channel
networks. It cant run over ip. I would suggest
you setup the following..
A Sun Enterprise 4500 with 4 A5500 storage arrays mirrored, connected via fiber channel to the 6500. The 4500 would have 16 processors and 4 gig of ram. That should easily handle 100 high end graphics users and permit the pc users to browse via cifs/nfs, thumbnails.
We are paid 100$ a week to carry our cell phone
at all times. In my group we are on call once every 5 weeks for the week 5pm to 8am. Normally
you never get called unless you are on call. But
managment still wants the ability to get in touch with us 24/7. If we can solve the problem over the phone then we dont get anything extra. If we need to come into the office to fix an issue while on call or have to come in to do maintence then we are paid 300$ each time.
Its not a whole let but it makes dealing with on call a little bit nicer.
I would love to build a battle bot and compete but
I'll be damed if I am going to fly out to california to do it. If they would start and east
coast league I would enter a bot in a heart beat.
Maybe they should divide up the country into 6 regions. ne, se, nc, sc, nw, sw. And then a huge
once a year event to determine the ultimate winner.
I suggest to avoid problems with your linux box
masquerading packets which have been already
checksummed.. You setup the vpn service on your
linux box. L2TP is essentially ipsec. If you follow the VPN howto.. avaliable at most Linux howto sites or visit the www.freeswan.org?? site
you should be able to get it up and running in
no time.
Yes it is on topic.. look at this forum. half the dam posts are about foreigners taking American jobs and older people whining about they cant get a decent job, foreigners coming in for cheaper wages, etc. If you are the best at what you do in your company then noone in their right mind is going to get rid of you. The market place is two strong right now to even find half way decent people let alone good ones. Maybe it is different in programming. But as an admin.. I get a minumum of 4 recruiter calls a day on my answering machine. Introducing additional h1b visa holders into the work force will only screw those who dont keep their skills strong. Only the strong surivive in a comptative marketplace. If people want companys to pay their salaries then they need to show value for the company's money.
Improve you skills every single day of your life. I have kids and a home yet I still find at least 1+ hours a night to learn. (I only sleep 6 hours total through:).
Become a leader at your workplace. Dont just do the bare minimum to get by. Go beyond what you are expected to do.
Make suggestions regarding new ideas you might have to your boss and sell it to others
Make yourself essential in your work environment by getting into important projects
Teach others in your workplace and expand their knowledge. It will only help you in the long run and display your leadership skills (but dont teach them every trick:) gotta keep a few tricks in the bag:).
Train, Train, Train! Get a job at a company that offers 2 weeks training a year. Take it! Use it to make yourself more valuable.
If you are working on mainframes or fox pro or other dying technologies.. then get off your ass and learn some new tech.
Keep up with tech news and industry trends.
If you dont LOVE computers then become a cop or fireman or something. Computer work requires that you love doing what you do.
Wake up! Life moves very fast. If you dont stop and take a look around every once in a while you will miss it, Buhler:)
We have HR email the admin mailing list every time
they hire or fire someone. It is basically someones responsbility in our group to watch
for this email and add/remove accounts as necessary. If an admin or network person leaves
that might have critical passwords.. we immediatly
change all passwords in the company and remove all
access before they walk out the door.
Has worked pretty well for us so far.. Of course
our environment is still like swiss cheese when
it comes to security.
Smells a bit fishy to me:P

There is a lot of black magic in ldap that needs to be written down. A really good topic would be setting up single sign on with unix/windows.
