  1. My thoughts on newspaper reform. on Would You Ever Read A Newspaper Again? · · Score: 1

Newspapers need to focus. They are a good media for delivering detailed (and I do mean detailed, not just some slaped together artical with a lot of quotations.) reports of what the TV and Cable media only glosses over. If they are covering a primery, give me data. Tell me about the state, what do the voters think, are the rules governing that primary different from any other primary, are there any special laws about primarys in that state? In other words, the devel is in the details, and I want to know all of the relevant material.

Also, and this may seem obvious, print the news in the news articals and keep the op-ed's in the op-ed's colum. I may dislike a reporters politics, but as long as they tell me the news, as unbiased as possable, then I will respect their integrety. As for th op-ed colums, lets add more. I would like to see ,(gasp!) real conservatives writing articals. (wow, even coverage, what a thought!) I would realy like to see liberals and conservativess debaiting the same issue, so that I the reader can see all sides of the situation. And give up the straw men. There is nothing that is more likly to make me abandon a news paper than a supposedly educated and trained editor treating a straw man as a real issue. If the editor is having trouble being objective, while representing his or her view about an issue have an associate write the artical.

Another thing that news papers mignt want to do is to add a section where they follow an issue. Usualy you only see somthing in the news paper when it is sensational. Well, newspaper lost that to TV, and they need to move on. I would like to see a (large) section, that follows story's reported in previous issues. It they told us about a new cancer drug, don't just say there is a drug, keep us updated. How did the clinical trials go? Are there any real (and I mean real, not just created) problems with the drug? How serious are they? If there was a train crash, dont just tell us who died, tell us who lived. Tell me about herroes from the crash.

I know this seams like a lot, and it is. But for newspapers do continue to flourish, they must find there place somewhere between TV and monthly periodicals. I hope that the place they find is one worth keeping.

Acualy the point is that if the artist is out there, and he or she is any good then there is a fair chance that they will develop a loyal following. If they do not, well remember that survival of the fitist thing that they talked about in school? The real point is that it makes no difference if the artist is having trouble reaching the public. When a large organization or group of people say that my basic freedoms (of speech, and property, to name two) are less valuable than any artists privilige (and it is a privilige) to be heard by a large group of people, and to make money off of that audience then there is a HUGE problem.

P.S. Most major musicians do not write the music that they play anyway, it is writen by smaller musicians and sold (at a price that would make you cry) to Garth, Reba, and Puff Dady.
For me to find truly good music, I learned about it from a friend (by hearing it at an underground party), then after using a fan sit and bootleg MP3 snipits (a briliant idea, copy the most recognizable 30 second of a song and set it free on the net, with info at the end on how to buy) to determin it was indeed what I was looking for, I ordered it from germany, and payed for airmail delivery to california (and got it in less than a week). And it still cost $2 less per CD that buying CD's at Tower or Best Buy. And due to my experience, I will most likly end up buying all of the CD's that the band has ever published. Now tell me about the good things that RIAA is doing for american artists again?
(BTW no music store in the USA even knows that the band that I bought, exists. Good job RIAA!)

The only tracks that you can pick and chose from are no name bands (NOTICE: I like some no name brands) or classical noncopyrighted work. I tryed to pick some of my favorite songs / groups and they ALL were not listed (even some that I thought where no names.).
The post you where addressing had it right. The only way to get the tracks you like is to buy all the CD's and create your own Mix CD. Technicaly it is illegal to do that, But as far as I am concerned as long as no one else is using the original CD's I am moraly ok in using the copied tracks. 11. Re:My views on Techies vs. Laywers & Judges · · Score: 1

I believe that you have been misslead. First, the founding fathers had no intention of creating a class of 'politicians'. The congressman (generic example) was supposed to be a citizen who was selected by his peers as someone who could represent their community's intrest to the other gathered representatives. Above that the congressman was supposed to look affter the greater good of the country. The position of a permanent politician is not what was intended, nor was the political party envisioned as an object of loyalty.
As to judges, they where members of the community who where respected as having a great deal of common sense and as being someone who would take the data given them in a case and make a fair judgment (hence the name judge) in that case. A law was simply supposed to provide a bechmark against which to measure out judgment and justice, after all do we realy need a law to tell us that murder is wrong? No, but it was usefull for seperating self defense from murder and for applying a sentince to the case (e.g. murder = death sentince, by hanging). Now we have judges who make and break laws because the law disagrees with their personal preference.

My point is this, the person who was supposed to make laws was the tech, the farmer, the scientist, the butcher, the local banker, not a paid gunslinger who takes and gives gavors for money of prestiege. That is why our laws are not working, we have the wrong people making them and interpteting them.

To track ducking is easy. Just have a sensor on the boot, at the knee, at the waist, and at the shoulder. It the person ducks the sensors will get closer to each other (this can me monitored from exterior sensors).
As to jumping just measure the pressure that the person puts on the pad. It I weigh 100 lbs. at calibration, and I know have both feet on the ground and suddenly I only weigh 95 lbs. and then 90 lbs. and then 85 (you get the point). The system can extrapolate that my leg muscles are contracting( this in conjunction with the affore mentioned sensors). Then if my weight starts to increase (e.g. I start to push my legs down to JUMP) then it would be reflected by the environment. The only thing is that the 'floor' would need to be able to move up and down (as a unit, not as an individual ball and probably no more that 2 feet total distance). That way you could feel your feet leave the ground (and return).

You indicate that having one of these devices will make a "geek"(TM) more anti-social. I dont think so heres why: I have a very bad memory for names. If I have one of these gadgets (and the right database program) when I meet a person at a party, then I can use this device to locate there record in my database and I will instantly know that my friend max warned me to never talk politics with this person (unless I am of his/her party) and that this person likes cats. Now I have a place to start a conversation with this individual (e.g "how is you cat?"). This device will allow users to share info about people they meet. This device stands to give geeks an edge in social setings, not the opposite.

Also thing about the busness uses: you are at a convention and a guy walk up and says "Hi, how are you!", now you just look up his gender/haircolor/eycolor/etc and you can respond, "Bruce, how did those merger talks go?".
Admitidly you will need time to work out a database catolog system that works for you but with practice I could probably find you in under 10 seconds. And It would look better than responding "uh, who are you?".

And as to privacy concerns about such a database 1) I am makeing private comments in it for personal reference, so I am not going to share it with just anybody. 2) I will probably access it by name (at home) and by gender/picture (at a party) so it is not like it will be indexed by there SSN or anything.
