It's shocking how few people realize that this is an option. There may be consequences for your actions such as termination, but you do have the option to not sign it.
I had the same thing happen to me a few years back. I had an NDA/non-compete dropped on my desk by the HR manager and I looked at it and handed it back to her and said no. She said I had to sign it, required, firings, I looked back and said Okay and put it in my trash.
A few hours later my boss came over and asked why I didn't sign it. I explained my issues and after three rounds with legal, they came back with a very narrow agreement that I was willing to sign.
Later on, I was talking with some other employees and happened to mention what happened and they were all shocked.
Well, I have begun the write up on the true directory service type approach. I'm gradually toying with methods and testing out some stuff. I'm going to try and have the main papers out on plans, technology, api etc out by the end of june. Last I actually looked, It was 14 pages of pure text so far. Formated its over 20.
I'll probably go the source forge route and have announcements on freshmeat if all goes well. If not,...well lets not look at it that way.
I have registered dnms.org for the project, but I don't know when I will have the server to put it on, so if any of you are willing to host the web server or at least dns so i can have it pointed to source forge, e-mail me.
Hey, now assuming ms would have stood by the liscense thing that said that if we were not willing to agree to terms...send it back, couldn't we get the system, send back the liscense, and gotten more money????? LBS
yes, he signed into law what congress passed. If congress passes nothing, he signs in nothing. The nice thing is that the american people have traditionally put a differing party congress then president. ie now the president is democratic, but the congress is republican. It forces both sides to concede some to get anything through, and (hopefully) gives us somewhat more reasonable laws.
Looking at the president only as a way of changed seems a bit short sighted. If we really want to protect privacy online, but not limit business, we need to also look into the senators and congressmen/women. The president can't make the law. Laws go through congress and then to the president.
We (the slashdotter's) should not root for AOL just because they are giving M$ a taste of their own medicine. I thought that we were above that sort of thing. Why do we hate M$? because they are evil. They use and manipulate the markets and their consumers. They produce shoddy software... But do we cheer when they are losing a battle? Yes if the battle is being fought correctly
Hold on a sec, What would you do if You had a product that cost multiple thousands a month to keep working and I wrote a product to use your servers but then showed my ads? AOL is proabably paying alot for the bandwidth to be able to have AIM user not using AOL. Now MS creates their product that uses AOL resources. Are we just supposed to say hey thats ok, what would be the next resource of someone elses that they stole?
E-mail works because everyone shares their resources. one of the reasons spam is such a problem because its people stealing resources from ISP's. This is close to the same thing and IMHO would be in the exact same boat if MSN ever put ads into thier client.
This is exactly what is happening at my local community college. One of the instructors expected the students to spend time and work on projects. The students complained to the dept. head that the class was to hard. Course these were the students that were sitting in the back row talking about ??? durring class and when the test came around complaining that what was on the test was never discussed

Oxygen
There is a group that I'm involved with that is working on creating a new distro based on slack.
Its going to be designed for servers rather then workstations and customized to be used for different needs (firewall, web, email...)
