Excuse me, but I was referring to Hemos's comments that amounted to a childish, "Look, DC sucks" when it'd already been posted.

I read Slashdot because in general the article quality is high, but this is just another opportunity for people to take a potshot at a company.

Geez, I love how moderators mod things up even though posts aren't based in reality.

3d-Now! is not merely an MMX extension. It was the first SIMD extension for floating point in the x86 architecture (Intel's SSE came later). It operates independently of MMX.

As for not being a substitute for your graphics card...well duh. But keep in mind that your CPU isn't doing nothing when pushing Quak3 out to the monitor. There's still the whole texture and lighting stage that must be done on the CPU (yes, Nvidia and all can get around this, but not all software uses those extensions).

As for "Is 3dNow used?", the answer is YES! Most modern video drivers actually incorproate 3dNow instructions in them as does some software. However, a lot of software prefers SSE since it's backed by the big guy. For reference though, the Athlon supports SSE prefetching just like the PIII.

That's not entirely true. If you look on the right side of an artist page, you'll see a number called "Payback Earnings". If you click that, you'll note that there are stats on how many plays the artist has (from the webpage and "MP3 radio stations, etc"). The artists get compensated per play so it's hardly just in MP3.com's interest to promote their webpages. The artists make out as well.

PC-133 - Yes, this is "there" so long as you get CAS2 latency PC-133. It's reasonably priced (only a few $$ more than PC-100) and worth it.

PC-133+ - I doubt we'll see any pure SDRAM beyond PC-133 though who knows. I'd suspect DDR to take its place (or RAMBUS, ugh)

DDR - It's sampling and there should be chipsets to support it later this year for the Athlon, but it's not there yet. No word on coost

Various *ons - Duron will be a great value for what you get (it'll perform a little better than the classic Athlon I'd bet). Thunderbird will be better of course (released same time) but eventually it'll be cheap too. Socket A looks like a viable platform for more than a year.

Should I wait - Totally up to you. Prce/performance will always get better the longer you wait

Don't confuse mp3.com's main service with the my.mp3.com service. The former does in fact sign "unsigned" artists and gives them a distribution channel. The latter provides online access to copyrighted MP3s provided they've figured out that you own them (via their Beam-It application).

It's a shame that the latter will almost surely end up resulting in the destruction of the former as they had a LOT of good artists there.

If a device existed that allowed you to do that, then yes you would have a good copy. But as I understand it, all currently available DVD-RAM devices zero out a certain header field to indicate they are not pressed discs. I assume devices that true movie "pirates" have circumvent this measure.

Therefore, yes, CSS is just to prevent playing by unlicensed devices.

Once again I think the author should have called the utility playDVD or something similar instead of DeCSS.

Then they went on to say that even if people think they're smart, they're leaving their ID behind and showed what they called a "unique ID #" on every bit of network information. They displayed something like this:
128.1.5.666 (yes they actually had 666 for the last 3 digits of the IP address). They also failed to point out IP spoofing, etc.

Interestingly, it's been hinted at that AMD may leave the on-cartridge L2 cache on the cargtridge when they do move L2 on die. This would mean you'd have 128k L1, full speed, and 512k 1/2 speed-or-so L3 on the cartridge w/o the motherboard makers have to do a thing...

Yes multiprocessor boards will be nice :)
