A URL that explains the STRUCTURE of UNIX?

They each have "features" unique to them that I either hate or like. Perhaps my tastes match the popular vote, perhaps not. Do the developers of GNOME and KDE know though what sucks and what kicks ass uniquely to each of their projects? Should we not, as end-users of open source software, get more actively involved and let them know what we like and don't like about each one in a constructive and thought-out manner? Be nice if someone knowledgble enough in both projects could post a PRO and CON list on each one (ie. who has better drag and drop, etc). Can we all agree we want one thing? We want to live in an age where "software doesn't suck". It'll happen, we know it will. But would you rather see that age come now or when your 65 and can't type as fast as you use to?
Ok, put it this way... Motorway traffic problems are VERY frustrating to the typical commuter that has to drive to work every day. Linux NEEDS to be userfriendly, and developer friendly. You need to work together. Compete with each other later, especially if your young, you have time. But for now, can't we just work together to make our share of the pie larger, for each other? Can't we just agree Mozilla is the best thing we have going, and rather then starting up your own little browser project.. you really should help push something that is almost at the finish line rather then starting from the beginning on your own?
Ok, I've ranted enough. I hope I moved some developers in the right direction.. would be sad to see the Linux community to continue to be the reason for its own stagnation in gaining mass acceptance.. which is what we really need.

Take away Microsoft's LOCKS...
#1 - Allow the clonablity of MS Windows. Just like Compaq did to IBM PCs.. Just like Novell, Caldara, and IBM did to MS-DOS... just as IBM also did to Windows with OS/2 Win 3.1 support... Just like Microsoft did to Apple.. just like Microsoft and Apple did to Xerox.. They stole or used or copied or whatever'd someone elses work to get a leg up in the computing world.
#2 - Open up MS Office and other MS file formats... The BIGGEST reason why MS Office is the leading Office Suite should be because people LIKE to use it.. not because they are worried about compatiablity. People shouldn't be FORCED to pay the Microsoft TAX (Upgrades) everytime Microsoft figures its time to force users to upgrade again.. And it is a forcing.. because if you recieve MS Office 2000 files and your using MS Office 97.. you HAVE to upgrade in order to read them.. or expect the person on the other side to create the files in the older format. And its not realistic to expect someone to downgrade their features simply to be backwards compatible with YOU.. and so everyone has to upgrade. Wouldn't it be nice if people bought software just like they buy everything else.. By price comparison.. Performance, Reliablity, Support, etc. Why BUY something because the company has you LOCKED into them. If MS says they support competition and innovation.. freeing their customers to make a choice is the BEST way to support those ideals.
#3 - If two software companies are programming for the same plateform.. they should both have the same knowledge for that platform, no? If Microsoft has better knowledge of Windows Operating Systems then their competitiors.. then it stands to reason, that as long as the Windows operating system is dominatant.. Any software that MS releases for that operating system.. would stand a good chance of dominating.. both because the operating system is so wide spread and used.. and because MS can better intergrate their competiting software into their own Operating System.. And have very strong packaging deals with PC Vendors, thereby taking advantage of the lazy american way... Buy things in PACKAGES rather then put it together yourself with the software YOU WANT.. even if it means ordering the software seperating from somewhere else. And so the solution should either be breaking up the Operating system part of the company away from everything else (There is no reason why the IE and MS Office portions of the company should be split from each other.. err no wait.. they might intergrate the two together.. Nevermind, split them too)... That way there is no longer any advantage in knowledge of the platform for the other parts of MS verses other competitiors out there. Either that or open up MS Windows. Microsoft can't have their cake and eat it too. If they don't want to be split up.. they have to open up the source for Windows so as to level the playing field. They can prevent commerical clones of Windows using the source if they want... but at least competiting software companies that make software like Office Suite's, email, browsers, etc.. can all program with the same knowledge about the plateform as everyones biggest competitor.. MS.
So basicly.. the answer is simple... DEFINITELY open up the popular MS file formats so that customers can CHOOSE their Office Suites. In the end, MS Office is a pretty damn good office suite out there on its own merits.. so MS should just chill out and realize that. And either open up MS Windows or break up the company. One of those two HAS to happen in order to successfully undo the damage that was caused in the Personal Computing sector.
And if someone agrees with this enough to clean up my comment, and forward it to the DOJ.. I'll give them a cookie.:)
How many of you use ICQ? Honestly? A Chat client is good.. and I like the idea of the ICQ MESSAGE HISTORY. I use it all the time to look up bits of information from conversations I had YEARS ago. I like it so much, that unless one of the Linux ICQ Cloned clients out there ever offers the ability to IMPORT the Windows ICQ History Database... I really don't wanna switch to any other client.. so I'm stuck in Windows.
The good news is WINE runs ICQ just fine.. except for one small thing.. and I think it has something to do with ICMP. I don't know all the details since I'm not much of a programmer... but I do know that WINE runs ICQ clients good enough to where it should be something VERY simple to fix. But no one seems to care because there are ICQ Linux clones. It drives me nuts.. its actually the ONLY THING anchoring me down in Windows believe it or not. If I could run ICQ 99b or ICQ 2000a in Linux under WINE... then I could free myself from Windows.
And so I ask... Does anyone have a clue on how to get it working? Or anything I could do to get it to work? Pay off a programmer to fix it or submit a bug report to the right people or whatever? I've submitted questions on Wine's USENET groups.. but I haven't gotten much feedback. Any help that could be offered on this would be GREATLY APPERICATED.
I'm a pretty major investor out there and I got burnt BAD by linux stocks.. Corel doesn't have money to operate anymore (I wonder what the odds are of a takeover?).. Inprise is kinda floating around out there (I wonder what the odds are for a takeover of that? Especially since IBM wants to get into Linux bigtime now)... and I bought REDHAT at 93, then again at 75.. and now its at 18.. and I'm hurting REALLY bad from it all. Everytime Microsoft has gone down, the Linux stocks took a jump up.. but then they'd sell off shortly after. What is it with the market and Linux stocks? Is it that they don't see how the future is open source yet? Do they not see how these companies can make money from free software?
I'm wondering what the Slashdot/Investment community thinks of this MAJOR downward trend in linux stocks, and perhaps can give some insight on what timeframe we can start too see these come back. Be cool to get some comments on individual stocks like COREL, INPRISE, REDHAT, etc..
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if others who were banned (like myself for having live Metallica concert recordings) have tried to recreate a new account and was still banned.. but it happens to me. I've uninstalled Napster, reinstalled it.. and tried to make many different logins, and even use different email addresses, etc. But Napster keeps saying the username is banned per Metallica. Maybe I just HAPPEN to be picking a bunch of usernames that other people have used and also had banned? I don't know. I'm curious what other people's experiences have been. I for one REFUSE to sign that legal document and would rather just make a new account.
Thanks so much for the response. Your right, I had forgotten just how long AMD has indeed been around .
My main concern though is if Intel has any way of causing incompadibilities against AMD chips. Like what Microsoft did to IBM's OS/2 Windows support. Or what Microsoft did to Caldera DR-DOS (or MR.DOS or whatever)..
Course, thats all Software. We're talking about hardware here.. The main CPU. Intel convinced alot of application developers to write code to support the MMX extentions. AMD's 3Dmax extentions didn't do to well.. But my question is.. Was it easy for AMD to incorporate MMX support into their chips? Is Intel required to show AMD their chip blueprints, at least to maintain compadibility with all the software out there as they evolve their respective chips?
My fear is getting an Athlon and seeing Intel do to AMD what Microsoft has done to those who tried to take a piece of their pie. I don't care about the MHz race, but please don't mess with the instruction sets on the chips!:)
I personally have never used an AMD chip. I also thought, that as long as we are going to be using operating systems on 808x architecture.. I would rather use the original (INTEL), rather then a emulation chip (AMD).. Thats just how I thought. And thru the years, seeing that there was this or that incompadibility problem with AMD chips for certain applications (ie. There were a handful of games in the past years that needed a patch in order for them to work on AMD chips).. It just reinforced my feelings against having an AMD chip.
Now much time has gone by.. I've honestly not heard a bad thing about an AMD chip in a long time. Perhaps they have achived a perfect duplication of the instruction sets that are in PIII's?
My concern is.. I really want a 1 GHz chip. I actually have some stuff that really could use the speed as my P2-400 is starting to feel sluggish. I'm much more willing to entertain the idea of having an AMD Athlon chip verses a PIII. Especially if AMD releases their 1 GHz in high volume production before this month is over (which looks likely).
SO MY QUESTION IS... What do I gain or loose by choosing one over the other? I've seen chip-enhancements talked about.. Like MMX, 3DMax, etc etc... Does AMD support MMX? Or is that strictly an Intel thing?
Basicly.. what I'm getting at is.. You can't have a sound card without Creative Labs Sound Blaster compadibility.. unless you want alot of games that don't support your sound card (at least thats how it was before DirectX). Are we still in that type of time period with using the most popular chip verses a chip (AMD) that only has 16% of the market?
If someone could list the Pro's & Cons of choosing AMD verses Intel.. or point me to a webpage that has such information.. I would be eternally grateful. Especially if it frees me from my bondage that Intel has me in.:)
> No, because Microsoft doesn't use Procom's implementation.
Ahh.. I thought I was missing something. But then how can they both be called NetBEUI? How similar are the two?
More to the point.. Does Procom's implementation being open sourced affect MS's NetBEUI in any way as far as revealing something that we didn't know before when it was closed?
If this truly has nothing to do with WIndows NetBEUI.. Then my god.. your all right.. this was a completely boring thing. err.. except for you dos/netware people.:P
> What "New NetBEUI security holes"? And why would then then "HAVE to embrace Open Source" for this?
Remember when Quake was open sourced? All kinds of new ways to cheat.. Remember.. alot of closed-source software today are considered secure thru their obscruity. Open the source up, and 9 out of 10 something has to be secured for real.. no?
> A protocol isn't "open-source" or "closed-source", it's publicly-documented or secret, and NetBEUI falls into the former category; see this document under "The NetBIOS Frames protocol".
If protocols can't be "open-sourced".. how is it that NetBEUI is being open sourced by Procom? I seem to be confused a tad bit now..:)
* Isn't it the MOST used protocol on every Windows machine? Or am I mistaken? Last I checked, most peer-to-peer windows networks had NetBEUI as the default protocol on all their machines. Doesn't Procom get a royality per copy of windows sold? If not, how did MS get their hands on it, and why did they decide to use this out-dated stack?
* Also.. WIth NetBEUI being open sourced.. what are the odds that ALL kinds of bugs are gonna be discovered with Windows Networkig (ie. New Security Issues)?
* What are the odds that Microsoft will now HAVE to embrace Open Source to at the very least fix their New NetBEUI security holes?
* And if Microsoft had the source-code themselves as part of their agreement with Procom (Or did they somehow get NetBEUI by other means?).. How come they were too lazy to fix all the security issues within the formally closed-source protocol (Assuming my theory of all kinds of security issues coming out is true), causing their clients to be majorly unhappy campers right at this moment ?
I'm not trying to sound like your typical Linux nutcase.. But I don't trust Microsoft. Look at everything they have done. Look at what they did with Java development tools. Everyone who was actually stupid enough to use MS Visual Java ++ or whatever the hell it was called is now faced with non-standard java rule-sets in the tools, along with the looming fear of Microsoft just canceling the project.
I feel that Microsoft is dropping these Media Player comments to make it a higher valued product, gain more market share.. without actually going to Linux. Or if they go to Linux, they will gain the market share.. then say the heck with Linux after they have finished squashing Realnetworks. I would NEVER use a Microsoft product under linux, because the odds that they would continue to evolve their product on that plateform is slim to none. Nope.. Stick with products from companies that actually LIKE Linux.
First off, I have to say I am the PROUD owner of 155,000 shares of Corel. If they do it right, they can totally take the crown away from Microsoft.
I feel I know what the strategy is, so my question is geared towards what I think the right course of action is.. and at the very least this will be a suggestion to Corel for a possible market position.
It is my feeling that Corel Linux can be perfectly positioned to be THEE PERFECT BRIDGE from Windows to Linux.
Even though Corel has been releasing alot of press-releases about Graph-On, and I understand that WINE isn't exactly ready for mass consumption yet by the Newbie users... It is my hope and question that Corel recognizes WINE has THEE MOST important step in Windows-Linux Transition. TO not need a single Microsoft program, that is the main goal. People are afraid to give up Windows and move totally to Linux for the simple reason that some of their favorite programs (like ICQ, and a bunch of video games) simply don't run under Linux. People however don't know yet that Wine can even run, almost perfectly, the most complex apps (Games with DirectX 3D, etc) under Linux. This goes beyond simply porting Corel's Windows apps over to Linux.
And so my question is, is Corel's interest in WINE above and beyond porting their own applications over to Linux?
And if so, has Corel looked at helping the development of Wine along to support the most popular of windows API functions (and in so doing, enabling sooner rather then later support of the most popularly used Apps)?
Lastly, has Corel decided on when they will market Corel Linux on the point that it, with Wine, can run your popular Windows applications TODAY... without the famous blue-screens?:)
Thanks for your time.. I wish Corel MUCH success, even if I didn't own all that stock in the company..:)
Well... This is interesting. I was able to find what my monitor was running at by going into a fullscreen dos prompt, then coming back out and my monitor told me:
95 kHz / 60Hz
And yes thats in 2048x1526x16bit.
Is that suppose to be possible with the math you used? How am I able to get 2048x1526 on a monitor that is suppose to support MAX 1600x1280?
I wish I knew how to make a modeline for Xfree86 to cover these higher screen resolutions. I feel weird going from 2048x1526 in Windows to 1600x1200 in XFree.. Ugh.:)
I have a Diamond V770 Ultra (TNT2-Ultra) with 32megs of RAM. I also have a "21 monitor which claims to have a max resolution of 1600x1200.
BUT..
In Win98 I run at a res of 2048x1536.
Yep. Thats right.. 2048x1536. Thats the MAX my video card will go, and my monitor can handle it.. and I do notice a big difference between that res and the common 1600x1200.
My monitor is a Hitachi CM751U.. Its specs are:
Horizontal - 31-95 kHz Vertical - 50-160 Hz
Video Clock Frequency - 200 Mhz (typical) Resolution - Horizontal - Up to 1,600 dots Vertical - Up to 1,280 dots
My question is though.. I always see the MAX resolutions for Xfree86 at 1600x1200. Can't it go higher? I'd love to have the same resolution in Xwindows. I thought perhaps maybe the Xconfigurations tools out there just maxed out at 1600x1200, but perhaps by manual configuration a higher resolution might be gained. I really HATE modelines though and would rather not try to figure it out myself.
So.. Is higher then 1600x1200 even POSSIBLE in Xwindows or Xfree86? And if so.. HOW?:)
Thanks so much for the advice. I'm definitely going to look into it. Overall.. I'm wondering how good a DSL connection is compared to a T1 on a Cisco router. I know bandwidth is bandwidth.. But I'm mostly concerned with Latency. I get 150kb/ps on my T1 for downloading, and alot of places ping within 20-50ms. Thats VERY nice, especially for those realtime.. ahem.. business applications..:)
Have you ever experienced a T1 on UUNet, with a Cisco router before? Or something close to it? Would you say going to DSL isn't much of a difference? I'd love to hear your input. I'm getting so sick of spending $900 a month..:)
And as far as the range.. I have called other companies (not CAIS though, I will definitely call them).. And so far they all have the same limits, although one company offered me DNS for $199 for a 128kbs connect.. YAY.. No thanx. I have to have at the VERY LEAST 640k/bs.. and I prefer my 1meg T1 bandwidth thank you very much.:) ...Latency is a HUGE deal to me too, thats why I never did radio modems or anything like that.
I have my own T1 Line from UUnet.. Yay. But you know what? I pay a friggin FORTUNE for it. I SOO want DSL. I live only 15 minutes outside of Washington D.C., which was touted as being THEE most WIRED city in all the USA. Yet, I'm unable to get DSL because I'm 4 miles from the C/O. Bell Atlantic said it was a technical issue.. I called PairGain, makers of DNS modems.. They said their modems can do 20 miles, and that it is NOT a technical issue.. Its a lingistics issue.
I called around, did some research.. and more and more, it looks like the Telcos are actually PREVENTING DSL from coming out. And when I call Bell Atlantic, they gladly say "Sorry, you can't have DSL.. BUT.. We can give you ISDN!!" Yay.
So whats going on? Does anyone know anything? I'm getting tired of paying for my T1.. And I REFUSE to go back to modems.. AND.. My cable company has that coax/modem combo connection crap.
I could definitely use some info.. I'm located in Potomac Maryland, near Rockville.
...My DUMBASS broker was suppose to buy it in the morning a month ago when it was only $5 per share... the idiot didn't do it til 11am, and it was $8.75 by that time. It SOO pissed me off.. ALwell.. It doesn't matter, Corel is over $10 now, and still climbing, and they only JUST showed their copy of Corel Linux at 4:15pm EST, thats near the Stock Market close, so that didn't give the stock market a chance to react to the new product. It will tomorrow though, oh boy oh boy!!
I still HIGHLY recommend Corel. Yes, you didn't get in at $1, $3, or $5.. But $10 is nothing to what it's going to be, and thats still alot lower then IPOs.. Which by the way, I'm happy to say I'm putting $20,000 into Andover.net, which will be priced around $12-15 per share. So Corel is STILL an excellent deal, especially when their PC Chips deal really kicks in, along with their direct Corel Linux Sales, CorelDraw 9 and WP Office 2000 is around the corner, plus any other deals they make.. Oh ya.. Corel is definitely shooting up!

And either open
up MS Windows or break up the company. One of those two HAS to happen in order to successfully undo the damage that was caused in the Personal Computing sector.
And if someone agrees with this enough to clean up my comment, and forward it to the DOJ.. I'll give them a cookie.

I'm a pretty major investor out there and I got
burnt BAD by linux stocks.. Corel doesn't have
money to operate anymore (I wonder what the odds
are of a takeover?)..
Thanks,

THat all sounds great.. You've got me really motivated to getting one of these chips.
My question though is.. Is there ANY advantage to getting an Intel chip over AMD? Besides sticking to the most popular chip?
Thanks,
-Matthew
Thanks so much for the response. Your right, I had forgotten just how long AMD has indeed been around .
:)
I don't care about the MHz race, but please don't mess with the instruction sets on the chips!
Thanks,
-Matthew
I personally have never used an AMD chip. I also thought, that as long as we are going to be using operating systems on 808x architecture.. I would rather use the original (INTEL), rather then a emulation chip (AMD).. Thats just how I thought. And thru the years, seeing that there was this or that incompadibility problem with AMD chips for certain applications (ie. There were a handful of games in the past years that needed a patch in order for them to work on AMD chips).. It just reinforced my feelings against having an AMD chip.
:)
Especially if it frees me from my bondage that Intel has me in.
Thanks,

> No, because Microsoft doesn't use Procom's implementation.
:P
:)
Then my god.. your all right.. this was a completely boring thing. err.. except for you dos/netware people.
I seem to be confused a tad bit now..
-Matthew

First off, I have to say I am the PROUD owner
:)
:)
of 155,000 shares of Corel.
Lastly, has Corel decided on when they will market Corel Linux on the point that it, with Wine, can run your popular Windows applications TODAY... without the famous blue-screens?
Thanks for your time.. I wish Corel MUCH success, even if I didn't own all that stock in the company..

Well. I've been running at this resolution for 4 months now. Is it possible that all is fine? Or is there such a thing as a Slow Fire? :)
-Matthew
Well... This is interesting. I was able to find what my monitor was running at by going into a fullscreen dos prompt, then coming back out and my monitor told me:
:)
Ugh.
Thanks,
-Matthew
I'm surprised no one mentioned this before..
:)
I have a Diamond V770 Ultra (TNT2-Ultra) with
32megs of RAM. I also have a "21 monitor which
claims to have a max resolution of 1600x1200.
BUT..
In Win98 I run at a res of 2048x1536.
Yep. Thats right.. 2048x1536. Thats the MAX
my video card will go, and my monitor can handle
it.. and I do notice a big difference between
that res and the common 1600x1200.
My monitor is a Hitachi CM751U.. Its specs are:
Horizontal - 31-95 kHz
Vertical - 50-160 Hz
Video Clock Frequency - 200 Mhz (typical)
Resolution - Horizontal - Up to 1,600 dots
Vertical - Up to 1,280 dots
My question is though.. I always see the MAX
resolutions for Xfree86 at 1600x1200. Can't
it go higher? I'd love to have the same
resolution in Xwindows. I thought perhaps maybe
the Xconfigurations tools out there just maxed
out at 1600x1200, but perhaps by manual configuration a higher resolution might be gained.
I really HATE modelines though and would rather
not try to figure it out myself.
So.. Is higher then 1600x1200 even POSSIBLE in Xwindows or Xfree86? And if so.. HOW?
Thanks,
-Matthew

Hrm.. Thats a DAMN good question.. I wonder...
Be interesting to see what SEC has to say about this.

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm definitely going to look into it. Overall.. I'm wondering how good a DSL connection is compared to a T1 on a Cisco router. I know bandwidth is bandwidth.. But I'm mostly concerned with Latency. :)
:)
:)
I get 150kb/ps on my T1 for downloading, and alot of places ping within 20-50ms. Thats VERY nice, especially for those realtime.. ahem.. business applications..
Have you ever experienced a T1 on UUNet, with a Cisco router before? Or something close to it? Would you say going to DSL isn't much of a difference? I'd love to hear your input. I'm getting so sick of spending $900 a month..
And as far as the range.. I have called other companies (not CAIS though, I will definitely call them).. And so far they all have the same limits, although one company offered me DNS for $199 for a 128kbs connect.. YAY.. No thanx. I have to have at the VERY LEAST 640k/bs.. and I prefer my 1meg T1 bandwidth thank you very much.
...Latency is a HUGE deal to me too, thats why I never did radio modems or anything like that.
Thanks,
-Matthew

If you attribute typos to coding.. Your code must look SOO pretty. :P
I called
PairGain, makers of DNS modems..
Thanks,
-Matthew

...My DUMBASS broker was suppose to buy it in the
:)
morning a month ago when it was only $5 per share... the idiot didn't do it til 11am, and
it was $8.75 by that time.
Oh ya.. and Go Andover.net too!!!
