send the money that you would have spent on the movie or cd to an organization that supports or lobbies in your interest. If you can't find any, create one. Work with others.

Also, write your local representative and tell them what you are doing and why. Let them know, in a nice way, how you feel. Check their voting record. If they've been nice, maybe contribute to their campaign. If you don't have the cash, maybe you can volunteer some time.

The main thing is do something. Less talk, more action.

Stop voting for politicians who take their own and corporate interests above the interests of the people they represent.

  8. Don't buy the CD on Coming Soon: Burn-Proof CDs · · Score: 1

People forget that no one is forcing us to buy CDs.

The record industry is a for-profit organinzation. They respond to record sales. They will not stand behind a technology that hinders sales (regardless that they say they're doing for the artist). Don't buy the CD. Buy CDs from artists and labels that use what you consider fair technology. Find labels that give their artists fair royalty deals and support the crap out of them!

Put some pressure on the artists, too. Tell them that you respect their work but you're not going to buy their new CD because it uses 'X' technology. Force them to have a say about how their art is distributed. And respect their decision. Protest but don't steal.

Breaking the copy-protection to steal the information is lame. Why should people get to steal a loaf of bread because they don't like the baker. Make your own damn bread and give it away.

Note - Breaking the copy-protection to prove the protection is lame is cool. You be your own jury.

  9. Give me my idiot box on Making Banner Ads Suck Less · · Score: 1

I don't mind the ads if they have content that's of my interest. I'd vote for the system that allows me to set the category of advertising.

I'd also like the ability to adjust the percentage allowed in of advertising outside of my selected interest. You might find something cool that you could have missed.

The problem I have with the karma is that people are clicking on ads just to gain points. This runs out the impression count that the advertiser has paid for faster and corrupts the data on whether the ad was effective. In the end, I don't think the advertisers would go for this.

    What about an ad slashbox?

Yeah, I cringe at most of the things the goverment does. But do we realize how HUGE a society we live in? And for the most part, it works! Anything that doesn't work is our fault for letting it be that way.

The cool thing about the US is that WE THE PEOPLE, can get elected to office and work to make changes (yes, it does require work). And these changes can happen without a single drop of bloodshed. It's not a perfect system that's gone bad. It's an imperfect system that requires lots of upkeep.

Rather than use the wide open Internet (which opens risk from foriegn attacks), I would suggest a private network much like the banking industry uses.

I feel an electronic ballot system would solve the problems of entering multiple values for a single choice item and a confirmation screen would insure that the correct vote is being sent.

My concern with this type of system would be cost, adoption of technology (do we have enough skilled people throughout the country to keep the system running), and what to do about absentee ballots.
