  1. For the win. on Psychoanalyzing Resident Evil and Silent Hill · · Score: 1

    Please hire me.

  2. Gammar exception. on Psychoanalyzing Resident Evil and Silent Hill · · Score: 1

Yes, I just noticed where I forgot to change from past to future tense and I am smacking my forehead now. Thank you.

  3. Lacanian analysis. on Psychoanalyzing Resident Evil and Silent Hill · · Score: 2, Funny

... [H]is end finds its meaning in the last judgment, where the Word absolves his being or condemns it—unless he reaches the subjective realization of being-toward-death.

Now I will get chills every time I have received a Word document as an email attachment or any time a potential employer requests my resume in Word format. Wow, this Lacan guy is spot-on.

  4. Totally shocked while browsing with Preview.app. on Confidential Microsoft Emails Posted Online · · Score: 1

I just found that when I load http://www.iowaconsumercase.org/010807/PLEX_7264.p df in Preview.app on Mac OS X, it appears simply to be a scanned copy of a print-out (not only from the distortion but also it is obvious pixelated as you zoom in), but I am able to select, copy, and paste the text. When this PDF was made, was some sort of OCR process performed that includes the results or did Apple quietly introduce this functionality into their viewer?

  5. I was hoping for a certain tag. on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Release Date Announced · · Score: 1

This should be filed under the “snapekillsdumbledore” category.

  6. Interesting points. on Aqua Teen Hunger Force Brings Boston to a Halt · · Score: 1

I think that is all somewhat valid, but I am pretty sure the reason Islamic terrorists hate us is because we are not all Muslims and we support cruel dictatorships in the Middle East that are friendly to our interests, such as those in Saudi Arabia, Iraq (formerly), and Kuwait. That is a simplification and those are not necessarily in order, but I am fairly sure that terrorists do not wake up in the morning and think about how lacking we are in common sense as motivation to plant explosives or bring down skyscrapers.

As for silly items, the way you think is good: it probably means you are not very creative at harming people. Unfortunately, if you wanted to maximize human casualties, disguising dangerous items as benign might be a great way to tempt people closer. Most generally flee anything that appears threatening, but if the threat was somehow humorous or inviting, more casualties would result. Terror in the aftermath would also be sharply increased if people started distrusting everyday items they once desired.

That is probably the exact reason the authorities reacted the way they did. It is impossible to know what the real motivations are behind something like this. If your goal is to terrorize people, you would try all sorts of different things. There are even plenty of popular culture references that employ this concept. Halloween movies featured masks for children that turned heads into insects when a certain television commercial was aired. Then there are fictional characters like Laughing Man from Ghost in the Shell.

The idea of using friendly images as an afront to destructive acts is nothing new, but I think we should learn to settle ourselves down when we realize something is a prank.

  7. All so unbelievably stupid, except... on Aqua Teen Hunger Force Brings Boston to a Halt · · Score: 1

When you look at certain pictures, it becomes clear why there was a serious backlash. I would be wondering what series of bright lights were doing on a bridge girder too, but I would not raise a stink about it after closer examination. Alas, most of the population does not have that much common sense, so here we are.

  8. You mean something like wood? on Nokia Developing Diamond-Like Gadget Casing · · Score: 1

I would say wood, which is the most widely used construction materal in temperate climates, is both strong and biodegradable.

  9. Not a trivial change. on Behind the Scenes at MIT's Network · · Score: 4, Insightful

I looked at the old one and compared it to mine (the same type he had). The only difference was the six buttons where Home, PgUp and so forth are located are arranged vertically on the new keyboard compared to horizontally on the old one.

When I switched to a keyboard that rearranged my “Super Six”, I was distraught too. I kept hitting the wrong keys and it was annoying for some time. This is not a trivial difference for people used to not staring at their keyboards as they work.

  10. Quit doubting it based on cost. on Solar Power Eliminates Utility Bills in U.S. Home · · Score: 5, Insightful

People are whining about how it costs a half-million dollars. It is so expensive because of low volume. We need early adopters like this guy to start the ball rolling. Once more people buy into this form of energy production, the cheaper it will become.

  11. NEDM on Gamers Don't Need Vista or DX 10 Says Carmack · · Score: 3, Funny

  12. Similar topic: helping censored people abroad. on FBI Arrests Neteller Execs · · Score: 1

I want to set up a proxy for people in China to use so they can avoid censorship. If I did this, and I ever visited China (which I hope to do some day), is there a chance I would be arrested if the Chinese government became aware of this hypothetical service and my identity? My assumption would be an affirmative “yes”, but what do any of you think? I am sure there are some international travelers on Slashdot who may do something similar.

  13. Creating music is tantamount to stealing! on RIAA Arrests Pro Artist for Making Mixtapes · · Score: 4, Funny

Of course, whenever you create music, you are actually stealing from music labels. Think about how much artists suffer when you make new music that someone in the industry could potentially have made and profited from. Will you not think of the arists?

  14. BE male gayness. on Blizzard Hints At New StarCraft, Launches Burning Crusade · · Score: 3, Funny

On a scale from average metrosexual to Richard Simmons, I would say Blood Elf males are somewhere around Tom Cruise, bordering on 80s Depeche Mode.

  15. Sampling. on Blizzard Hints At New StarCraft, Launches Burning Crusade · · Score: 1

Assuming that group was even a remotely representive sample, then it does not matter. When I signed onto the game shortly after picking it up, roughly (if not more than) 50% of the Blood Elf characters I saw were female (which were obviously just rolled).

Not saying there is anything wrong with this, just find it funny. :)

  16. Other platforms. on Blizzard Hints At New StarCraft, Launches Burning Crusade · · Score: 1

For the first time ever, World of Warcraft players meet in public. In real life. This allowed us to collect some interesting data about the demographics. Out of nearly 50 people standing around the EB Games where I picked up my copy, I think four were girls. Just saying. Something to think about next time you /flirt.

Serious aside: once you get your copy, there is no need to run the installer from the discs. All you need is the key to upgrade your account using the provided key—you already have all the content as of the 2.0 patch series. If you run the installer, it rolls your local copy back to 2.0.3, and once you start the game, you would go through two patch cycles back to 2.0.5. Save yourself some time and just upgrade your account directly at https://upgrade.worldofwarcraft.com/expansion/.

  25. Funny you mention that. on Seagate Plans 37.5TB HDD Within Matter of Years · · Score: 4, Insightful

The cost, longevity, performance, and capacity is completely inferior to making backups of disks onto other disks, and has been for quite some time. I have no idea why people ever stick with tape at all these days other than for nostalgia. Does it feel good to have a cartridge using a remarkably old fashion approach to data storage or are people just ill-informed?
