It also occurs to me that the only company which makes quality usable client side java apps is Oracle. Just about every single one of their client side apps is written in Java including the installer.

You are probably right. Americans are especially way too selfish to ever give up their cars for good. But that does not mean that we should not try do everything we can to encourage the use of public transportation. In big cities like NY or Chicago millions of people use mass transportation because it's actually convenient in some cases. Maybe we could take those ideas and try to apply them elsewhere.
We could reduce urban sprawl, we could build better communitites where people don't have to drive everywhere, we could spend more money on public transportation to make it run more often, and most importantly we could educate people to realize that everytime they get into their car they are causing harm to the planet. It's true most Americans don't care about harming the planet or destroying their chilrens future when it comes time to make a midnight run for Haagen Dazs but you never know maybe we could convince a few of them.

Perhaps you should tell us where you got your meteorology degree and what your basis is for dismissing the report of these scientists as bunk. Perhaps you did some reseach that contradicts theirs. Perhaps your in depth knowledge of the ice core samples taken at the north and south pole has given you some insight. Perhaps sitting for hours in some tent in the frigid and brutal landscape gave you some transendental understanding that supercedes the overwhelming consensus of scientists who have studied this topic for years.
So which is it my friend? What specific evidence or insight can you lead us to that would cause us to instantly disregard these scientists.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Who is more likely to be right? You or a group of people who hold PHDs in meterology and who have spent a majority of their lives studying the climate?
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
If my wife or one of my non geek friends came to me and started complaining that I was parsing this bit of XML properly or that my data model was not properly normalized I would laugh in their face. How dare somebody who has never written a line of code tell me that I am doing something wrong.
So I would urge you to think twice before you go around saying people are full of shit. There is wide spread agreement amongst meteorologists and oceanographers that global warming is indeed happening. Yes they have arguments with each other about the hows and the whys just like we have BSD/Linux GNOME/KDE disagreements but it's not your place to interject yourself into this argument if you know nothing about the subject at hand.
I was a weather observer in the military and what little understanding I have of meteorology tought me that this is one of the most complex systems you will ever encounter. It takes years of dedicated study and a PHD level of education before you can start to think about these things in a coherent way.
I would venture to say most people who post on this topic will be speaking out or total ignorance of sketchy knowledge at best. If there is a consensus amongst the people who have dedicated their lives to this who are you to tell them they are wrong?
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Native American is accurate if nothing else. I don't know why you think it's cheezy. Other then refering to each tribe by name I can think of no more accurate way to describe them. Perhaps the word aboriginal comes close.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Back then there were maybe three or four million people in America. The impact of four million people on a land the size of America is negligable especially considering the fact that they had no technology to speak of and did not even farm. The Native Americans lived in a country where there was absolutely no competition for food or natural resources. There was no need to farm because the food supply was endless for all practical purposes.
So you tell me how the conditions of America 200 years ago are in any way similar to what they are now? Over 200 million people live here now. Much of the topsoil is gone due to agriculture, there is probably not one river in the US which you can drink out of and not risk getting sick.
Read the diary of Lewis and Clark one day and your mind will be blown. At one point they had to wait three days for the buffalo herd to go by!. How can any sane person compare that landscape to what we have now.

A thermometer is a very simple and well understood device. It has remained essentially unchanged since it's invention. Even in 1880 we were able build incredible complex and precise machinary. Go to a museum one day as see some old clocks and watches.
It's very easy to take temprature readings using a common thermometer. How do you get that an old themometer would read a different temprature then a new one? How much room for error is there in sticking a termometer in the sea and reading the result.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Lets not forget that melting ice also has an effect on the reflectivity of the planet. As the albedo of the earth decreases it may cause it to absorb more energy and lead to a chain reaction. IANAOoAM (I am not an oceanagropher or a meterologist.

If your life belongs to you that's one thing. If you are married and have children you have a responsibility to them that is much more then the responsibility you have to your boss. In the long run you gain nothing by cheating your children out of a father and cheating your wife out of a husband. When you are old or sick your boss is not going to give damn about you.
IMHO if you bought a child into this world it better be your top priority in life to make sure it gets raised properly, responsibly, and lovingly. Anything else has got to be pretty far down on your list of things to do.

Only if you live in a swing state. If you live in a solidly republican state like Montana, Texas, New Mexico etc then Gore is going to lose anyway. Same goes for a solidly democratic state like MA or CA. So here is an idea for you. If a few days before the election one candidate is leading the toher by 10 points of more that candidate is going to win. If you live in one of those states vote your conscience and vote Nader. In tightly contested races vote for Gore.
this way you don't effect the outcome of the election, and Nader gets enough votes to qualify for matching funds.

You couln't do serious enterprise-level work with ms-sql either. But face it for every serious enterprise-wide deployment out there there are thousands of not so serious small to medium size deployments.

I use netscape because although ti crashes more often then IE it does not take the rest of machine with it. Once IE crashes I gotta reboot if Netscape crashes then I just kill the process and restart it.

Theoretically weather ot not some corporation does or does not spin off some other corporation should have no effect on an open source project right? Well it just goes to show you that IB is not like the other open source projects you know about. ODBC driver was pulled because this spin off was mishandled by Inprise. Also the developer documents were pulled because ISC wants more money. Go the the interbase2000.org web site and read all about it.
Like I said not like any other open source project I know. Usually a project starts up and then if the project is successful commercial entitites get formed to support it not in this case. Seems like they are trying to put the cart before the horse.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Very good!. I have though of the following.
We have three born again christians and an orthodox jew running for president. No matter who wins it going to be a bad time to be a moslem or gay. Nader is the only secular cadidate running for president and the only president who won't be prejudised against people of differing religions.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Give me break. This thing will take five years if it's ever done. Just more vaporware to counteract the whole GNOME foundation announcement. Who believes MS press releases anymore anyways.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Because Bill Made a deal. Office for mac in return for making IE the default browser on the Mac. Did you miss the big hullabaloo when this was announced? Jobs Wanted office gates wanted a bigger market share for IE.

Suppose it's costing company X A 10 million per year to clean up their toxic waste. They introduce a ballot measure to repeal pollution laws. They pay every citizen who votes for the inititive a $100.00 or $1000.00. No matter what they spend to buy this legislation they will make it up in a few years and thereby provide maximum value to shareholders.
The citizens vote and pocket their $100.00 all happy and good till the deformed babies show up and they die of cancer.

"And who should enforce these penalties? An overpowerful government that is suddenly in control of the software market? Sorry...that's
probably not what you want."
Why not? regulation is not the same thing as control of the market is it. The government mandates auto safety, airline safety, elevator safety, food safety and zillions of other things so that corporations can't kill, maim, or enslave as many people as they want to. Why is the software industy so special that it alone should be free from government regulation?
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
I think people like oracle because it's more stable and scales better. You are probably right though you can save a lot of money and get almost as good uptime using ms-sql. OTOH you can save even more money and get almost the same performance (and a few new features) and use postgres. I think this is the point. MS-SQL server is overkill for most small to medium applications and businesses it costs too much and it only runs on NT which adds even more to the cost. Using POstgres on linux you can save thousands of dollars. If you use oracle on linux or solaris you get to get out of paying a per seat license on the NT server (the hidden cost of ms-sql server). At that level sql server and oracle are pretty even on the pricing.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Unfortunately they tend to use very expensive machines to do those tests. I don't know of any open source software that scrape 4 or 5 million dollars to build a huge machine like that. I would love to see tpc ratings done on affordable 2 to 4 processor machines tho. That would be cool.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
The lame ODBC driver is the only one available for Interbase. The "real" odbc driver has been retracted and may never see the light of day. What do you want them to use? As of today there is no ODBC driver for IB 6.0 not even a commercial one.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
There seems to be a lot of infighting with borland and some people who were promised a spin off company but were snubbed when borland changed it's mind. A good amount of borland employees quit and are trying to form a new company which they refer to as "newco". Apparently this newco is looking for $500K (you read that right) in commitments before they will actually start anything. Until then they have retracted the ODBC driver and the online developers documentation they have been working on.
Right now the source is on a couple of CVS trees, and some projects have been formed but borland still owns the test suite, the name and a few cruicial pieces like the "official documents".
To me this smells like two commercial entities fighting for control over an open source project and it's looking like the rest of the user base is being used as a weapon. On the one hand you have borland saying "you can have this source but you can't have these other pieces" and on the other you have newco saying "we are going to hold on to the stuff we developed till we get paid" either way doesn't sound much like an open source project to me.
Maybe a user driven project will eventually take off, maybe some uninterested third party will write an open source ODBC driver, maybe a user driven documentation will spring forth like the PHP documentation but that situation does not exist yet.
This open source thing was flubbed badly by all parties involved. It makes them look petty and frankly it's embarrasing to watch. IB is a nice database I hope these people can get their acts together and or the user community can take charge but I would guess that will take some time.
It's apparent
