CFO magazine a while back also posted a story about how linux was not good because you could'nt sue anybody when your system crashed. I wrote them a letter expalining that any CIO or CFO who thought that they could sue MS over a crash and would be willing to commit shareholder resources to such an endevour should be "outed" tarred and featherd by their own shareholders. The fact of the matter is that this publication is aimed at CFOs who are lucky if they can change the card colors on their solitaire game. They know nothing about technology and will willingly eat up anything that sounds plausable. It reminds of a dilbert cartoon where Dilbert tells the PHB that the token has fallen out of the token ring network and then the PHB starts looking under the desk to try and find it. If you are going to write to these people keep a two year old in mind. If what you say can not be understood by a two year old these people are not going to get it.

It's always been that way. Remember "friend don't let friends drive chevys"? ford VS chevy is pretty damned stupid because no matter who wins some corporation makes out like a bandit. At least with open source it's a bunch of human beings against a soul-less, immortal corporate entity that can crush them like grapes. It's drama and mythology of the best kind. Why do you think david and goliath is such an enduring story? Something in our conscienceness resonates with that story.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Probably but that's just my point. This holy grail of code reuse amongst languages was already hard when all languages were procedural and relatively similar to each other. Now that we have object oriented, functional, dynamic languages it becomes just downright impossible. People who use a language do so because it gives them what no other language does, so why would they give up all the cool stuff about their language to fit into some least sommon denominator VM. It just doesn't make sense.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Aaaah but it was the republicans who were clamoring for the law when republicans were the president. It has nothing to do with what is better for the country and everything to do with what is better for your team. For most politicians the only people who matter are the people on your team. The rest of America can go screw themselves.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
IF we pass campaign reform laws there will be nothing preventing corporations or rich texas buddies of George W. Bush from spending 5 million dollars in NY telling people that John McCain is FOR breast cancer and actually wants women to die from breast cancer. New York republicans were apparently persuaded by those ads go figure.
Here is the way to stop this nonsense. Severely limit what the government is allowed to do. If the congressman you just bought is incapable of diverting taxpayers money into your pocket then you will be less likely to buy another one. All you have to do is to get the government out of the corporate welfare business.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Actually one could very easly argue that capitalism is immoral and not just amoral. if your moral grounding is based on Christianity, Budhism or Islam you hhave to admit that capitalism is evil. Jesus, Mohammed, and Budha all preached living a humble lifestyle and not becoming attached to material goods. Jesus and Budha were adamant about how evil and corrupting money and wealth were and mohammed was a lot more practical about it.
If everybody who claimed to be a Christian or budhist actually lived as one the world economy would collapse.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Well we almost have this now. It's called the JVM. The java virtual machine already hosts a multitude of languages including perl, tcl, python, smalltalk etc. Why not improve this process that way you not only have what MS has but it's also portable.
I think that we'll find out that the MS VM is going to force languages to make severe sacrifices to be compatible with each other. Look at the eiffel implementation (called eiffel# of course). It gives up multiple inheritance amongst other things so that it can live in the VM.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Nobody expects perfection. Not from the doctors and not from the police. Just like every doctor who makes a mistake should not have their license removed not every cop who makes a mistake should be fired. Not being perfect does not absolve you of your responsibilitites though. Just like the doctor has to face a suit and higher insurance rates the cop who made a mistake has to pay for it. Either by being sued or being reprimanded by the dept.
If a protester actually assaulted a police officer they will most likely suffer horribly. The penalties for assaulting police officers are much higher then assaulting "ordinary" people. I am not even asking that the police who assaulted people pay the same penalty as the people who assault the police but they should suffer the same consequence as any other "ordinary" assault.
I don't know where you are getting this "You are not willing to pay for" crap. I pay my taxes. I pay too much taxes just like everybody else in this country.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Maybe it's time to sell that stock. By keeping the stock you are helping to perpetuate the monopoly. If enough people sold their MSFT stock it would drive the stock down and take away an important revenue stream for MS. Besides your conscience would be clearer and there would be one less smudge on your Karma. Why not invest in a nice ethical company I am sure there must a one or two out there someplace. I remember you posting about how much money you made from the redhat and VA ipos so obiously you are not hard up for money and can take a smaller gain in stock value in exchange for better sleep.

What is this other at 23%. I would guess that it's mostly *BSD. I doubt there are that many macs, amigas, as/400, be, OS/2 web sites out there (did I miss someone?).
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
I very seriously doubt this. Almost every computer sold today comes with windows pre-installed. There may be a few (1-2%) of people building their own systems and pirating windows but it's a miniscule amount. More likely though is somebody buying a 5 CAL NT and putting 25 people on it. Until the MS stormtroopers find out they get to use NT for free . Once the Piracy squad shows up then they have to pay up but it's still cheaper not to pay for it until you have to.

They seem to be getting more aggressive though. Office will soon require registration before it functions and I doubt the servers are far behind. It remains to be seen weather such agressive tactics will lead to defections to Star Office. One can only hope.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Since Dell actually charges more for a Linux pre-installed machine then a windows one I don't think that would be such a good measure. Maybe getting shipment numbers from VA or Penguin.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
So little of the money actually trickles down to starving artists anyway. Vast majority of the money either ends up in the hands of the record company or the few rich artists. Just like the rest of the economy where the 95% of the wealth is held by 5% of the people.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
You don't seem to get it. It is the job of a police officer to restrain people. If a police officer can not perform this task then they don't belong on the street.
What does it matter weather I volunteer or "support" them? I don't volunteer to help surgeons either but they seem to be able to do their jobs without my help. If by any chance a surgeon messes up and harms somebody in the course of doing their jobs they stand to get sued and deservedly so.
The cops need to stop whining about how hard their jobs are get on with it. There are lots of hard jobs deal with it or quit.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
When taunted by protesters it's not the job of the police to shut them up. It should not be possible to goad the police into a confrontation. If you are able to do so then you are dealing with an inept and poorly trained police officer.
As for restraint it's insanely easy to restrain somebody who is resiting. I took a little Jui Justu and I was able to restrain people who were bigger then me, were resisting with all theri might and knew exactly what I was atempting to do. Police are trained in these tactics and should be able to execute them under strassful conditions. Once again if they can not they don't belong on the street they should be giving out tickets or shuffling papers.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Police are given guns by the state. In exchange for that power they have a responsibility to act in a measured and acceptable way. If a policeman is unable to function within the parameters of his training and orders when taunted or insulted verbally they can not be trusted to do their jobs when under much more dangerous situations like an armed robber. Any policeman who lashes out at protesters is clearly incapable of handling low to medium stress conditions and should be taken off the force before they are exposed to high stress conditions.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
And under what circumstances is ripping the ear off of a person just punishment? What would the person have to be doing to deserve that kind of a punishment BEFORE being tried and found guilty?
The problem here is that you seem lack a sense of proportion. As a general rule protesting, failing to clear the road, disrupting traffic etc are harmless acts and at worst you should be expected to pay a fine and be on your way. Beating and mutilations are not just punishment in a free society.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
What's teh big deal. Are there more then ten people in the world who actually believe anything MS says anymore. Jeez how many times does a company have to lie to people before they stop listening to them.
Look guys. It's MS. Their truth percentage is somewhere around 1%. When they announced C# they lied!. They said that eiffel was running on it. CRAPOLA!. According to t his article from MS it's not eiffel it's eiffel# a hacked shadow of eiffel.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
I think you may be right. My windows 2000 machine randomly rebooted three times today once when my hands were away from my desk! It seems to be very good at randomly rebooting and then recovering from that. Meanwhile the intern working on the red hat machine hasn't has a random reboot at all. Come to think of it I don't think that machine has been rebooted in a long time.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
If you lose the capability to do standarardised and automated installs and upgrades then the total TCO for windows shoots way up. this is great news for anybody pitching a linux solution. I hope MS goes very hard after offenders.
A Dick and a Bush.. You know somebody's gonna get screwed.
Geez how do you fit that printer inside your PC box.
No please don't take printers. An off the shelf HP laserjet 6 caused the machine to lock up every third print job. An off the shelf DELL with an ATI rage card randomly rebooted itself several times a day. Eventually I was able to get beta drivers for both and now it just randomly reboots every other day or so if you are lucky. I am still waiting for tested, signed officially OKed drivers from DELL or ATI but it might take a couple of months. Oh yea installing Interbase Version 6.0 also killed the system!. The OS let the installer overwrite a crucial system DLL. WhooHoo all it takes to take down W2K is a DLL with a wrong timestamp.
Nothing changes the same old crap in a new packaging. I really should know by now what to expect from MS.
