You are in the minority. Look how scared the US was to commit ground troops in Kosovo? You think they will commit to fighting the Chinese? Like I said not even the most rabid war mongering republican has the guts to say that we will defend taiwan to the end. Hell U.S. Does not even recognize the taiwanese government.
More capable at what? Getting you to the grocery store? Getting to work? My mazda gets me around reliably, cheaply, and comfortably. Plust it's paid for! I have often though that somebody in my income bracket ought to be driving a BMW or Audi or whatever but I simply can't justify getting into debt when all I do is run around town. The speed limit is 75 (on most days I am lucky if I do 50). The only reason to buy an expensive car or an SUV is for sexual display. No practical reason at all. I am already married and have no need to impress the chicks or the neighbors.
Like it or not the computer is an essential tool for the performance of many jobs. If you are a secretary and you can not use your computer to a minimum standard then you ought to be fired. Same as any accountant, doctor, lawyer etc. No matter what your job is you will be expected to be proficient in the effective use of ALL the tools of your trade. A doctor does not get to say "well I can use the scalpel just fine but I don't have time to learn how to use clamp" or "this blood respirator is just too complex and I am not going to learn it because I have a life". If in the course of your job you are required to use a computer and you don't learn how to make efficient use of it then you deserve to get fired.
Americans don't have the stomach to defend taiwan. Sure we can provide naval or air support in theory but trust me nobody want's to risk world war III or a nuclear devestation in order to defend taiwan. It's all bark and no bite.
If this were true, most music wouldn't exist. Despite what your favorite left-wing writers might think, financial rewards still have an attraction for most people.
Very informative. So what you are saying is that before the advent of intellectual property there was no music. There was no art, no writing, no ideas at all. Only with the advent of intellectual property did music, art and literature enter the world.
Well I swithed to it rather then upgrading to windows 2K. So to me at least it was a competitor.
Windows is already fractured go try and download IE and you'll see how many different versions they have. Win3.1, win95, win98, nt3.5, nt4.0, CE, 2K (in three flavors!). You see 9 different versions of windows and each of them at least a little incompatible with the ohter ones.
Really? he seemed to have a bit of difficulty with the english language and an obvious ignorance of the technology involved. He is a dinosaur in a dinosaur band. He is going axtinct and he doesn't even know it yet.
Heaven forbid a human being should ever change his mind about anything. We all know that the world is black and white and that anybody who is not marching lock step along some ideology or another is obviously not qualified to lead a country in the modern age.
Don't you think it's sad that somebody in the US has to go someplace in order to get free speech? Just goes to show you how bad things have become in the former land of the free.
Ironically your best bet will be to go to china, russia or some other country that we used to think of as opressive.
"Prohibition? Sure it got overturned. After we, as a nation, ignored it and ended up creating organized crime syndicates that kill extort, and corrupt our cities. Sure - That was a great outcome."
If you make something that people want illegal it does not make people stop wanting it. Prohibition was the cause of organized crime. People will always want gambling, prostitution, drugs and alcohol. As long as you make these thing illegal you create an opportunity for people who are able to provide them.
I question the need to mess with the environment variables in the first place. When your app gets started argv[0] tells you the directory it got launched from and you should be able to figure out where everything else is from there.
It gets trickier when you want a fine degree of control over who gets to mess which files though. The reason people put conf files in/etc is because it's world readable but only root writeable. This seems like a reasonable place to put config files. In your scenario the user will need to further mess with permissions in order for the app to work properly (that is securely).
Presuming of course that your representitive acutally reads their own email. Most probably don't and have a staff member read it. Have you been watching the congressional inquiry into the emails? Dan Burton obviously has never even used an email client in his life. At one point he was demanding an explanation into an email which did not contain a "to" header. The poor sysadmin was trying to explain to him that sometimes people press send before typing in an address. He just could not understand how such a thing could happen and was convinced that this was a part of a coverup. There is a line in the original Star wars movie. "Who is more foolish? the fool, or the ones who follow him.". Makes you wonder who Mr. Burton "represents".
"Affecting their net worth by 80% downward means that ramen noodles and broth is for dinner."
Well I suppose there would be idiots who would hold on to a sliding stock long enough to go broke but I don't think that would be the majority of stock holders. Most fund managers are already slowly getting out MS and tech stocks in general. A companies Stock price is the only legitemate target. After all a corporation exists only if it makes money. Besides which Bill G. Could slaughter babies in front of the white house and nobody would arrest him let alone prosecute him. He committed perjury and nobody even raised an eyebrow. Anybody who flaunts the law like that is immune from the law of land. If the laws of the US don't apply to corporate executives what else can you go after?
Take VNC and modify it slightly. Have the NC run VNC to connect to the server. If the network goes down no problem wait till the server is back up and continue on. Better yet.. At your home dial in connect to the server and start working. Oops time to go to work. Turn your NC off and head to work. Use your work PC and fire up VNC continue your work where you left it off.
See how great that would work.
BTW I would guess the files would be saved on the database Oracle 8i has this feature.
Is there a way you can post the results of your tests? I would love to see them. How are they at different loads? What I find amazing is how much the features differ. Postgres has a huge list of features including the ability to overload operators!! but it lacks outer joins. Weird sense of priorities I guess. I would take SQL 92 compliance over weird datatypes any day.
It's the slick easy dev tools that are hard to come by. Show me anything that approaches the speed of the access dev model.
Here is how postgres can sneak in the back door. Change the server slightly so that it does case insensitive collation like access does. Then you can link via ODBC and still use access as a front end tool and still get a robust database engine. You might have to upgrade the ODBC driver though..

If you continued driving the nissan and socked away the 40K that you could have retired several years earlier then otherwise.
Food for thought.

OOh corporations love people like you!.

Some artists were never very popular. How I wish I still had some of my Mal Waldron Albums. Now they are all out of print and I miss them.

Brilliant culture hacking. Please mod this up. This is an excellant way to dilute the power of the "lawyer letter".
"If they're not making any money off of it and they don't want it anyway.."
Last I checked they made more profit on OS/2 then Red Hat generated revenue. I guess it's all a perception thing.
It's called Prince (again!). You get to write songs like "jack U off" and "soft and wet" all the while claiming to love god.

Corporations are immortal. Corporations are soul-less.
Mmmm let me dig out the bible to see what it says about soul-less immortal beings.

No ODBC driver for ver 6 yet :(
Not even crappy ones.
