"I'm not the one who has to find that model, since I am not the one claiming that all existing developers can make money writing Open Source."
I don't think anybody is making such a claim. Some open source developers make money because the company they work for release the code they wrote. I don't think anybody has claimed ALL existing OS coders can make money.
Personally I don't think this is some great evil. If you feel like writing code great. If you feel like giving away code great. Nobody is forcing anybody to do anyting. I think there will always be steady stream of coders who are willing to contribute something in their spare time.
"If it's his property he can do what he wants with it, IMO. (OTOH, I might pay for a lawyer to look through the covenant for some way to sneak around the requirements without violating them"
I hate this crap. Look it's his property but it's not his country. He has to obey the laws of the city, county, state and the country his property is located in. Just because it's your property that does not mean you can rape somebody on it does it?
But judge it's my property and I can do any drug I want to on it! Yea right.
I don't know what your needs are but have you checked out postgres. It's great and very easy to use. I use pgaccess as a front end to it and prefer it greatly to the SQL enterprise manager (which IMHO is a piece of junk). Lately I have been playing around with interbase some too and I am very impressed with that too. Capable, easy to use, stable, and free can't beat that with a stick.
PostgresSQL is open source and supports transactions and stored procedures (in many languages).
Interbase is open source and supports transactions and stored procedures.
They also both support versioning to get away from lock problems in high transaction environments.
OF course sybase, oracle, informix, db/2 also support transactions and stored procedures. Right now ms-sql has about 10% of the database market and they are being squeezed from the top by oracle and IBM and from the bottom by postgres, interbase and sqlanywhere. There really is no compelling need to use sql server unless you are married to NT or Microsoft. You could save a TON of money by going open source.
Right now I can not think of anything equavalent to VCLs in the linux world (well beans maybe). IMHO it was the VBX/ActiveX/VCL that made it possible for "ordinary" people to write windows applications that actually did something useful. By adding a component driven application architecture into linux Borland is ushering an new age of linux developement. Now you don't have to be a C guru to write a decent app. Also if database access is simple like Delphi expect this thing to take off big time. I can't wait!
I for one plan on buying this thing the day it hits the market. If I can write an application then both OSes could benefit (if my app was worth a crap that is). Also as a developer it would open up my market. I can attempt to sell to more people.
I was talking with my wife earlier today about issues like DeCSS and DMCA adn she was shocked that she did not know any of this stuff was going on. I said that I did not expect her and other non-geek population at large to be very informed about such a narrow (albeit important) topic. She then said then we get just what we deserve. She suggested htat we email everybody we know and educate them about these topics. Having thought about this for a while I agree with her. We tend to look down on the "ordinary" american and dismiss them but as long as we don't get them involved we are powerless. I suppose it would help if the geek community was a little more political too but we seem all too happy to bury our noses in our monitors and pretend this is all going to get better on it's own.

Using taxpayers money to spy and then passing that informations on to private corporations is wrong.
Multinational companies owe no alliegance to the US they have shown over and over that they are willing to screw over the american citizens and go chase cheaper slave labor overseas. They have their own money to spend. Hell most multinationals have a greater GNP then a lot of nations.
why would you trust an MS programmer? Just because they work for MS? Do they really have a that stellar of a track history of writing solid bug free code?
If the courts hold that the GPL does not apply they would in effect destroy all shrink wrap licenses too. It could mean the end of the EULA altogether. I think it's a win-win situation.

I just don't see where you are getting this from. I serously doubt RMS wants power and control. What he wants is decentralization. He want his ideas to take hold and empower people. I honestly don't see him seeking power for himself.
"The FSF demands that all contributors to "GNU" projects sign over the rights to their work to the FSF. The FSF thus accumulates the rights to code in a way which it would deride if any other organization were to do so."
The reason for this is that the FSF has a better shot at defending this software against theft. We all know corporations would love to steal this code and profit from it and of course individual developers are not able to fight them as effectively as FSF is. Nobody is coerced into signing away their copyrights. Nobody is under any obligation to turn code over to the FSF they do so voluntarily.

This is absolutely true. Just like corporations hoard source code and threaten others who would use the source the FSF uses the same tactics and laws against corporations (and others who would steal code). I would guess that the ratio of hoarded code by private corporations to the FSF stach has got to be HUGE. As for malice well I don't see where FSF can be compared to Microsoft. The FSF makes their code freely "usable" by anybody although they limit redistribution MS does not do this. The FSF has broken no laws. The RMS has not commited perjury unlike Bill G. I don't see how you can say the FSF is as evil as MS when even a cursory glance at the dealings of MS will show them to be ruthless cut-throat businessmen who don't let little things like morals and ethics get in the way of them making money.

I agree that the goal of FSF is to promote free software. It does this by using the power of copyright. But once again I will reiterate the FSF does not promote a BAN on commercial software. They fight against it by competing with them and occationally winning. RMS realized that he could use the same weapons the corporations use and turn it on back on them (mainly copyrights, intellecutal property, and software licenses). He then was able to activate a huge community to join him in his quest to fight corporations. I think he hit on a right formula. If the corporations want to stop him they will have dismantle the copyright laws. what he did not forsee however was the abuse of the patent system. If he had just patented all of his code in the beggining he would rule the world.

Actually a significant minory is good enough. If linux got 20% market penetration that would probably be enough to make hardware manufacturers write drivers for it.
