"What if you don't know the name of the program you want? What if you don't even know what program you want? What if you don't even know what KIND of program you want?"
Let's pretend for a moment that every word you say is true. Then shouldn't everybody who works that hard also be compensated like you? There are people who struggle all their lives working two and three jobs trying to feed their families who never rise above poverty. What about them?
I did and as it turns out you were lying when you said "but generally the two (inter)operate separately and nicely.".
It turns out that Windows does nothing to interoperate with linux while linux tries very hard to interopare with windows. Apparantly the only way to attempt to get linux to connect ot active directory si to use an alpha version of samba. According to the samba web site they are still trying very hard to reverse engineer the whole AD thing because MS will not publish their specs to the public.
Since you were moderated up so high I thought you might be telling the truth but alas it was not so.
I don't think anybody is talking about hypocrisy. I think people are questioning the judgement and the morality of the US. If we were wrong in the past (and often) then what makes you think we are right now?
Most people know that the US supports whoever or whatever monster is out there as long as the right pockets get filled with gold. In this case the US taxpayers will help some very rich oil families get even richer. The fact that some of those families are named bush, cheney and rumsfeld are especially troubling.
Attacking iraq has nothing to do with weapons of mass destruction. If it did then bushie would be calling on congress to give him the right to pre-emptively attack pakistan and north korea. It has everything to with family shame and family fortunes. Remember bullies never attack people who might hit back. It's always the weakest kid that gets beaten up and his lunch money taken away.
That's all fine and dandy but it still does not answer my question. How do I get my linux box to authenticate from an active directory server or vice versa?
First of all who said anything about a rational discussion? This is slashdot remember.
Secondly any kind of a discussion is silly thing to do when you look at the fact that M$ is spending tens of millions trying to destroy open source and take away your freedoms. Are you seriously equating any body using M$ to the CEO of the biggest company in the world calling people a cancer or communist?
I use the M$ (or micro-soft or even Ms) because it's a little insignificant thing that seems to REALLY piss of the M$ astro turfers. It's fun to get a rise out of them. I encourage other people to do so because for the same reason.
It's fun to watch the astro turfers because it's very apparent they are getting their marching orders from somebody. They use the same arguments over and over and apparently they were told to try and eradicate the use of the M$.
"Microsoft, knowing that IIS isn't anywhere near as accepted as Apache for web serving has decided that porting Passport to the OSes that run the majority of web servers would help with adoption rates for the technology."
The question was not why they were porting it it was why are porting this one thing that isn't making any money while refusing to port other software which is making them money. A question which is still left unanswered.
"Companies that want to use Passport have told Microsoft that they are unwilling to switch from their Unix based web servers to Win2K Server w/IIS just to be able to use Passport. Microsoft has listened and has decided to port Passport to various Unices so that it will be accepted."
I find it very hard to believe that a unix shop anywhere actually wants to use passport. They are probably using kerberos or ldap or nis or something.
"I mean, really, what was the last 'innovation' that occured in the *nix/world?"
zope, postgresql, jabber, rsync, http, email, ftp, tcp/ip, DNS, distributed file systems etc. are all innovations that occured in the *nix world. I just stopped there but there are tons more. Just about every single piece of technology that you use every day come out of the unix world.
"Sure, there's a little overlap, but generally the two (inter)operate separately and nicely. Right tool for the job... choice is good, eh? "
Apparently you are very knowledgable about this topic (why else would be moderated up so high) so could you tell me how to get linux to authenticate and interplay nicely with active directory?
That's just a technicality. Corporations can't go to jail so they are not tried in criminal court.
If the US had a real and equitable justice system the corporation woould have been found guilty of antitrust violations and been split up and the officers of MS would have been found guilty of perjury, evidence tampering, and witness tampering and ended up in jail.
Alas we don't have a real and equitable justice system. Just the best that money can buy.
No not really. Not when compared to GM, ATT, IBM, wall mart, exxon/mobil, boeing and a thousand other companies in the world. A billion is not that much considering a 10 trillion dollar economy. To put it into perpective consider this. The US govt spent 2 billion dollars giving aid to israel this year. A billion is nothing.
No it's not. I did some quick searching and the highest number I found was 36K. Big difference.
"They also are hiring, unlike most high-techs these days."
Yes it's nice to have a monopoly isn't it. While your competitor dies from your predetory pricing you can pick up some of their employees cheap. The rest of their employees can stand in the bread line like every body else though.
"Guilty or otherwise, if MS had of paid off the democrats they'd never have been targeted for prosecution."
Which just proves that MS bought politicians. You seem to be saying that it's OK for MS to buy politicians because politicians acted out against them for spite. But two wrongs don't make a right.
BTW they were found guilty.
Also I would be very interested if you can dig up any evidence whatsoever of your allegations about clinton. One email, a snippet from a news paper, a magazine article. Anything at all will do. I searched google and found nothing but MS astro turfers claiming this on forums. Any hard evidence?
If not anything else the next 10 years ought to erase the idea that the US is basically a peace loving country from the minds of it's citizens. We Americans have an awfully distorted view of ourselves as peace loving people interested in making the world a better place when in reality there has not been a 5 year period during which we did not kill people in some country or another.
Maybe it will ease some cognitive dissonance who knows.
BTW how many people think that the correlation between high crime rates (especially murder) in the US and the frequency with which the US kills people in other countries is somehow related. By continously killing people in other countries aren't we teaching our children that violence is a great way to solve our problems?
A quote from "Bowling for Columbine". "Guns don't kill people, Americans kill people".
I think by now nobody has any faith that the ashcroft justice dept will deliver justice here. Even if the judge throws the book at MS no way in hell ashcroft will enforce the verdict. The Bush administration has been wholly bought by Bill Gates and they will do whatever he wants them to.
Not really. They have under 30 thousand employees. Let's Compare that to some other large employers shall we.
IBM = 312,000 AT&T = 151,000 Exxon = 131,000 Philip Morris = 140,000
The paltry 30K employees of MS could very easily be absorbed into the US economy.
"Microsoft isn't a terrorist state."
No but they are convicted criminals.
"Microsoft buys politicians."
There is no debating this.
"Microsoft is mostly clean, un-threatening white guys."
Mostly white sure. Un-threating? depends on who you are I suppose. Unethical most likely? Remember these people have a cult like attitude towards their company and Bill Gates and have remarkable ability to rationalize away any evil committed in their name and with their help.
"How can anyone decide if he's making it up or not?"
You can't really except to rely on past behaviour. Ms has a history of keeping certain parts of the API undocumented and there is no reason to believe that they are not doing that today. MS remains the same unethical company run by the same batch of unethical people. Why would anybody believe that they all of a sudden turned into an honest company?
"What if you don't know the name of the program you want? What if you don't even know what program you want? What if you don't even know what KIND of program you want?"
apt-cache search whatever
If you are thinking of "rethinking the pim" go look at an old version ecco pro. That was one awsome pim that got buried for no reason.
"They deserve what they get. These people chose to have a family, they chose to have a new car, credit card debt and a house too big for them"
It's apparent that you have never met any poor people.
Let's pretend for a moment that every word you say is true. Then shouldn't everybody who works that hard also be compensated like you? There are people who struggle all their lives working two and three jobs trying to feed their families who never rise above poverty. What about them?

No he was not. Go back and re-read his post he said *nix.
NT was made to mimic VMS that does not sound very innovative to me either.
First of all who said anything about a rational discussion? This is slashdot remember.

I just love it when M$ astroturfers get upset at the dollar sign.

" I've never seen any community that's closer to a cult than the linux community"
Apparently you have never hung out at the MS campus.
"Be honest, if Father Linus told you to fly a plane in MS headquarters you'd do it, wouldn't you?"
No and he would not. He is not an evil person. Something that can't be said for Bill Gates.
" 30 k employess isn't a lot?"

Not really. Not that much.

Not really. They have under 30 thousand employees. Let's Compare that to some other large employers shall we.

I thought the courts already rules that code was not speech.
komodo from activestate is a stunning example.
