  1. just making a point on DMCA Forces Cox To Censor Changelog? · · Score: 5, Interesting
It seems to me that Alan is just trying to make a point about how ridiculous the DMCA is in this case by taking this relatively extreme position how the DMCA throws a wet blanket onto legitimate security discussions.

Atlanta needs ALS. The first three ALS shows seemed very successful to me. (Plus I got to meet CmdrTaco there.) The number of people who showed up demonstrated that the audience is either already in Atlanta or are willing to come here.

ALS used to held right around the Networld+Interop show.

Now it seems that all the Linux shows are in either NY/Boston or SF Bay area.

Bring back the Atlanta Linux Showcase.

There is no such thing as email privacy. Email is transmitted in the clear over the internet. It is about a private as a postcard. If you want to send a private message, then put your mail into an "envelope" with the use of PGP/GPG etc. Even then, don't be fooled. If the feds want to read your encrypted email, they can, in a very short time.

Nope. Not that. It's about lots of little green pieces of paper with Ben Franklin's face on them. It's money that's not going into their wallet. Call me cynical, but I expect to see this software for sale for a lot of $$$.

On the flip side, perhaps a technically great young person lacks the business "chops" that come with old age and treachery. Just because you are technically superior does not mean that you have the life experience to be capable in other (non-tech) parts of a more responsible job.

If you were on call 24x7, you got paid for 7 days instead of 5, a big fat 40% bump. People in my group fought to be on-call, we had to have a waiting list to carry the pager.

  21. slave labor on H1B Tech Visa Workers Being Deported From U.S. · · Score: 5
Everywhere I have worked, the H1-Bs have been very close to slave labor. They often make less than half the rate/salary of a US citizen or green card holder. Many of them are terribly exploited in this way. Sure, they make more here than they could in their native country (usually India) but their employers are ripping them off with the lousy pay they get.

The same side of this same coin has rendered some older information workers unemployable: they have sufficient breadth of experience and seniority that makes them too expensive to hire. Or retrain.

We need to make sure that imported labor does not leave our citizens/green card holders out in the cold by making sure that the H1-Bs are paid a competitive and fair salary.
