Because while the vast majority of the populace is tupid and easily manipulated, those with a bit more forsight tend to rise to power and do thing in a better way. It's always been like that from Alexander to Julius Ceasar to Sun Tsu to Patton. We endure poor leaders (Bush) so that when a great one comes we embrace him and we all jump forward (see the US space program). Libertarians place too much emphasis on the abilities of individuals. Individuals tend not to want to think or make good decisions. They want to pawn off resposibility. In a way, the modern democracy by passes the tendancy of leaders to rise and give idiots with good PR a better chance then great men with character flaws.
Not quite, they have to make a fatal/sterility inducing decision to effect this. becoming fat and voting against your own self interest is bad but not fatal/self sterilizing.
The deepest flaw with the libertarian/free market arguement is that it requires a populace that makes intelligent decisions. As we all know we don't. Thus Bush is in power, Thus most americans are fat, ect.... In countries where regulations are few and far between. No product is trust worthy, scrupulous sellers are virtually non exsistant and short term gain int he only consideration. Now this might be because any country with few regulations tend to be under developed and it might be coincidence but there does seem to be a co-occurance or developement and regulation.
they had a whoel thread about this before. Another company had one out before apple. So the claim was false. but they were the first major manaufactuere to have one.
I have been through those arguement a lot. Knowing a lot of fundies from being in a baptist congregation. I'd have to say none of them have a single clue about science. The ones who argue for creationism here are more intelllegent but have no idea how ludicrous their arguments sound to 1- a statician 2- a biologist 3- logistician 4- geneticist. I am a little of each and it sounds liek utter BS even though I'm a baptists.
more like "pithy statements against intellegent thought". They try to write off essential a century of research and scientific proof with a single line of non-squiters that do nothign to forward their argument.
Stalagtite formation doesn't imply a creator. Why would the formaiton of planetS? Although I am christian and religious I find fundies strikingly ignorant of science.
"It is not being optimistic to say that the electoral process - and democracy as a whole - has improved over the past century. Moreover, there are examples of other western democracies where the voting process is much less controversial. Canada is a good example: voter participation is high, and irregularities are few - yet the ballot casting system is both very simple and virtually tamper-proof."
Err, voter turn out is low here. around 60% in a good year. While the voting is relativly trustworthy, the rigging is done in how the voting disticts are made. Basically the ruling party determines the districts. There are guidelines about how many ect.. but they generally draw them so as to favor the ruling party. In our system, one party will rule until we're sick of em then we choose the other. The opposition rarely "wins" and election, it's usually the winning party "losing" the election.
Then again thats just the problem with beign a "content" populace. We don't enjoy change.
A RAM disk is a software construct not a physical device. It doesn't cost anything.
The X-Box 2 is apparently due to ship with ~256+ MB RAM, a RAM disk just means taking part of that and using it to emulate a physical disk (as X-Box 1 games would of course only use 64 MB they wouldn't need the rest, leaving plenty left over for a RAM disk).
I am perfectly aware fo what a ramdisk is, the xbox had 64megs of ram. so of that 256 64 would be reserved just to match the same memory. the emulator won't come without space, since they don't intend to put p4 chips int here they must emulate. That'd be at least 10-20 megs. Leaving 180 megs for a ramdisk. But, it remains to be seen i thats enough. I got no stats on how big the cache gets. So they'd have to put in more ram which would jack the costs up. the whole reason for leaving the HD off the X2 was because its cost doesn't fall fast.
We don't know if they will or not, but we do know it's easily technically possible based on what information is available about the hardware. That you don't understand that that has do to with you having very limited knowledge of the subject being discussed.
Frankly, no. It does not seem technically easy given info avilable. IT seems they have gone out of their way to make BC as hard to do as possible. They witched CPU architectures, making software emulation a required feature for BC. They switched GPU's which will garentees graphic glitches and possibly legal wrangling from nvidia(it's not all standard d3d calls). They dropped the hard drive, requiring emulation of a hard disk. All of that points to no-BC but will it really hurt the X2? I don't think so. They don't have that much momentum to carry over. starting from scratch isn't too much different then continuing the current software library. The GC did fine without it. There's simply not enough games to make the expensive and time intensive EMU worth wile. IT's not easy. You have seen a perfect eMU of a ps. send me the link. I'd liek to see that. I have yet to see one that supports more then a handful of games very well.
If it's just for cache write you could simply write to a ram disk (If it's relying on swap it's got to be a specific reserved amount, given the X-Box doesn't seem to reserve much for that in the region of 512 MB would be more than sufficient I would have thought, and RAM is dirt cheap and increasingly so).
you seem to vastly overestimate how much the machine will cost in the end. Their loss leader adn then there is insanity. a ram disk? I highly doubt it. It seems very veyr likly MS has written off the xbox as a minor success and am moving on with the Xbox 2 as simply a fresh start. Nothing in the xbox is worht salvaging. The game library is in fact anemic. The only point to Bc is to preserve the library so the next system will have titles at launch. It helps bridge it. What value do you see in BC for MS? for sony it's vital. it helps maintain their momentum, but for nintendo and MS the basic reasons for BC dont' exsist.
Is seems you've been well rebutted. I stand by my assessment and add the fact that there is no HD as one of your repliers mentions. Have you run emulation latley? for 20 year old games, they run flawlessly. on 15 year old games, almost perfect. on the last decade of game, their shit. it'll take another 5-10 years of emu for a pc to play an xbox game full speed via emu.
1- they changed CPU architectures. 2- They changed GPU's and the previous GPU is hevaily heavily copyrighted. 3- they have only 5-10 games worth playing on Xbox 4- Emu of 3d graphics w/o glitches is a dream. Even ps2 had glitches and it included the god damn hardware.
Then let me ammend my statements. Russia was a deciding factor in both wars. The Us was an important factor. Without Russia, both would have resulted in Gemran holding a lot of europe. But without the US the outcome would have been very similiar if somewhat longe rin coming. The US did more to hedge the Russian Expansion then to defeat the germans. However the pacific theatre in wwii was all Uncle Sam.
Very informative. but don't forget us poor caandians. We had more then a small part to play in both wars, even if we're rarly mentioned. While the Americans reaped the glory and adulation of liberating cities after D-day, the Canadians had already gone through in the night and were fighting down the road. Why? BEcause we took Juno on time, so it's natural that we kept going. And in WWI Vimy ridge was a turning point in the momentum of the allied forces, helping morale as well. The germans feared the Canadians.... yeha I know, crazed beer soaked lumber jacks with rifle would scare me too.
"Like nepolean, the russian winter beat the germans" Naploean liked to blame "General Winter" for his failure against Russia. The truth is that he made military errors and the Russian forces beat him in straight battles. I am sure the winter didn't help, but blaming the winter is a bit of a Napoleonic cop out.
Napolean advanced ahead of his supply lines, doign exactly what the germans did a few centries later. They both assumed they could do on site procurment of supplies. In the end the russians fought a disheartened, starving, weakened army. And on the retreat the french left their wounded to be slaughtered byt he russians. All in all a total route and winter was a factor. but indeed, russia is not someone to trifle with.
*That* was why the war on the eastern front was over. The Germans had bigger fish to fry, otherwise they would have flowed through Russia like the Mississippi river flows through, I don't know, some flat mostly downhill piece of land.
Still, they suffered most of their casualties on the eastern front. They significantly depleted their resources. The civil war was a god send to the Germans. If they didn't stir that up, they would have been crushed by the Russians. They weren't doign well militarily.
Russia withdrew from WWI, and gave the Germans a whole lot to go away. Lenin was nearly lynched for this. Russia's withdrawl from the war freed up thousands of Germans to come to the Western Front and join in a new offensive. The British and French were exhausted, and might have lost, were it not for the Americans.
Try wikipedia before making sweeping generalizaions.
Russia did more damage to the german armies in both wars then all the other allies combined. What I'm saying is the US was a factor. But russia was the deciding factor. Is the US didn't join, it's uncertain how it woudl have went. If russia didn't join the outcome would have been certain. A german state that occupies 80% of europe and possibly a new colonial natiosn occupying a large percentage of earth. They had technology 10-20 years ahead of everyone in warfare and industry(although not radar or code breaking ). So the US was a important factor. But Russia was the deciding factor.
Well, if it were not for the US sending supplies over the Atlantic for the British I very much doubt Great Britain would have lasted that long. And if Germany had gotten their hands on the British Isles they could have focused almost all their forces onto Russia, and therefore maybe could have taken Moskow not stopped 1,5 km short of it.
Of course this is all ifs but I do not think Russia could have made it all alone
Like nepolean, the russian winter beat the germans. The USA was an important factor. There's no denying it. Munitions and other supplies win wars. But they weren't the deciding factor. If russia became Germans ally or stayed neutral, the war may have stalemated. IT may have ended up that germany would become 80% of europe. It might have stayed that way. Without the US involve ment, the russians still would have eventually pushed germany back. Germany lost most of it's men to the russians and not to the americans and british. So while it's comforting to think the good guys saved the day, in truth the bad guys did more damage to each other. Observe the fact that even after the war, Russia was a force to be feared.
Um...yeah we were. We weren't the ONLY power (like now) but we were a power. Remember WWI, when we were a deciding factor in the Allied victory over the central powers? We were included in the peace talks afterwards, though we weren't necessarily listened to. After that, we still had less overseas involvement than in post WWII, but that doesn't mean we weren't a power.
The US wasn't the deciding factor, it was simply a factor. IT hedged how much terrortory the germans could take. Withouth the US in WWII Russia woudl have taken more land, and nothign more. The germans never had a chance. Same in WWI, The US helped shorten the wars but Russia won them.
Um, guys.. North Korea hasn't attacked anyone, um, ever... they're not rogue. We just don't like them. We don't have to start killing them. They aren't going to attack you. Calm down. Take a breath. The NK's are not going to commit suicide by taking on the U.S. We won't be killed. I don't think they've broken any laws, and in any case, as G.W.B. once said, call your international lawyers. They care about international law as much as Bushists do.
Right , right, and the hundreds of japanese/s. korean people they kidnapped in the last 50 years are nobody. The random murders of other countries citizens don't count for dick. is that right?
Chrono isn't a trademark. A trademark is just what the name implies, a mark for your trade. The word 'squaresoft' is a trademark. It identifies the game publisher called squaresoft. Trademarks, like businesses, can exist pretty much forever. This is reasonable since you're likely to pass your business on to your kids and you don't want another business pretending to be them. But we still need some way to expire trademarks, and that's why they have to be defended.
Copyright doesn't have to be defended. You can cheerfully ignore abuse right up to the end and then sue all you want.
At least this is how it works in the USA, I assume Japan is simular (what with all the presure we here in the US put on countries to do what we say).
Chronotrigger is a trade mark. It's a brand under which some products are sold. The IP of that brand is copy righted. Somethigns, like a character named chrono are not. However his likeness is copyrighted.
I am a bit skeptic about this kind of fan games (although Maniac Mansion Deluxe was really impressive), but when I saw the trailer I was really stunned. Give it a try!
It is a shame Square (and all big corporations really) is so annoying with a non comercial project that would even give a boost to Chrono series popularity and pave the way for a third official game in the series.
I am all for closing people profiting from other's trademarks, but when hardcore fans do a game/hack/mod/expansion just for the pleasure of doing it without gaining a penny... I don't understand why companys force them to cancel these projetcs.
You do run the risk of losing yoru trae mark if they don't send a cease and desist. Chrono trigger is a brand and a trademark. If they let a OS project use the likeness it diminishes their ability to control the trade mark and it makes it harder to defend them from true piracy. IANAL.
I want an MMORPG try age-enforced servers. You can't join server "Enterprise" until you're 21 years old, period. Your ID has to be verified with some kind of government document or something.

Well that might be exageration but, why cut off at least half of your potential customers?
