True, but you can't deny that people order things and ship them via USPS. Lots of people use priority mail. I've seen lots of e-commerce sites that offered the option of going with a private delivery company like UPS or going with the USPS.
What's even scarier to me is that, yeah, we have to buy a licensed player, but it's a one time fee. For now. Consider what would happen if the DVD consortium realized what the UCITA would do for them. And if the UCITA got passed...
I know what a pain it is to have your credit card information stolen just because some companies can't keep a secure database. I've had mine stolen.
However, maybe in the long run this event is good. I think the best way for companies to learn how important security is is to have lots of really irate customers like CDUniverse will have. Also, maybe other companies will look at this and say, "hey...let's make sure our security is beefed up so this doesn't happen to us."
Hopefully people will start realizing that transfer encryption is only a small part of security. Once it arrives, protecting confidential data is a continual process.

JavaScript, ColdFusion, ASP, etc...are all just the host products of right now. I really doubt that it is worth taking college level courses to learn these kinds of technologies. If you do, you should probably take something non-credit from a community college. Otherwise, just learn it by practice. I think that's pretty much what everyone else does.
It would be nice if some of the big name artists would get riled up about the way these companies treat lesser known artists that are on the same label. I suppose that most of them either don't care, or already are under some kind of restrictive contract themselves. A lot of these people could get together and fund their own label. There's really no reason to stick around with labels like Sony if they're going to try to pull this shit. For some, there's a financial reason not to leave the label, but if you're a household name you can pretty much call your own shots.
Bill Gates, according to Shadow Syndromes, is reported to rock himself, spend hours on the trampoline, not make eye contact, and have trouble making social conversation.
I got to thinking about the idea that if someone never intended to buy a certain software product, there would be no loss in revenue for the vendor if the product is pirated by this person.
Some people's arguments proceed to the idea that if everyone were to have this mentality, software vendors would go broke because no one would be paying for the product.
I thought about companies. Large companies pay for lots of software licenses at a time. So does the government.
My question is: is it really at-home consumers who are crippling the software vendors, or large-scale companies and government agencies? It is true that companies and government agencies pirate a lot; usually due to poor record keeping. The SPA can't know that I (hypothetically) sent a disk to my buddy, but expired site licenses can be tracked. So who are these statistics reflective of?
This is kinda off topic, but... I'm not sure if it's imlib or not, but why do the icons in the gnome panel get aliased? If you browse through your gnome-*.png icons with windowmaker, they're always antialiased against the background. Gnome won't do this, so they look like crap. Is windowmaker just better in this department?
I agree. I tend to believe that people's descriptions of what is going on inside high schools -- severe beatings, muggings, abuse, etc. -- is largely exaggerated. I just graduated high school a couple years ago and saw none of that during my stay. I don't believe my experience was unique.
Slashdot's readership lost a lot of credibility in my book when so many people wrote in with their horror stories of high school and understanding of the Littleton killers' motives instead of describing those kids as what they were: weak-willed chickenshits.
Also, why is it that so many people can't understand why school administrators are going apeshit when kids look suspicious? First, put yourself in the shoes of the school officials. If the school you're in charge of just locked itself into closets because some asshole with a machine gun who had a bad Quake day decided to kill everybody, you'd be pretty paranoid too. Second, take off the fucking trenchcoat for a month or two until things calm down. Why is that so hard?
You're probably correct here. I might just be blind to something, but I can't see anything but benefits coming from releasing hardware specs. They won't have to pay in-house developers to release binary drivers. I'd also be more quick to buy some piece of hardware if I knew that it had good drivers.
I couldn't agree more. I was going to post something to this effect. What is truly sad is that a lot of the posts on/. are mentioning that society points fingers at video games, etc. when the real problem lies in the social dynamics of high school. This is entirely wrong. No matter who makes fun of you or doesn't accept you, there is no reason whatsoever to gun down anyone. The problem is that these were weak-willed crybabies who, unfortunately, had easy access to weapons.
What I wonder is how much of what most "loners" call ridicule and unacceptance is actually brought upon by themselves. I think that to a certain degree, lots of "loner" types actually like being outcasts because it gives them some kind of identity. Has anyone ever tried going out and playing a friendly game of basketball or frisbee once in a while? People make fun of how you dress? If it hurts so badly, dress differently. I'm seeing too much typical teen rebellion here to have any sympathy for the suspects or the people who wrote to Katz.
I graduated high school just a couple years ago. I didn't go to prom, didn't have any girlfriends, and rarely left my room on weekends. Big deal. I'm not pissed at those who did. I hope they had fun.
People need to take responsibility for themselves. Life is all about doing shit you don't wanna do.
If I got taken to court for the same thing, I'd say "Hey, eToys knew they didn't have a case."

I laughed out loud at this one. Very funny.
Read this quote carefully. I can't redistribute something derived from GPLed code unless I keep the source closed? This makes no sense to me.
George Lucas: a guy that got rich because he made a movie basically about rebels fighting an evil empire.
How ironic.Does anybody have any experience, tips, warnings, etc. for XML development with 8i?
It does. Mine's been working fine for some time now.

Amen to that. I would even *buy* a Linux version.
