well, i don't know anything about how operating systems work, but i'll have a crack:)
this 'computer' is a clustered system right? 16x4 clusters running MPI on linux (the specs are on google somewhere). such a setup requires support for MPI , and the different implementations of this technology on different kernels will yield differing performance levels. im not saying that linux would provide the best results, or that the performance difference between different MPI implementations would be significant - just that it would exist and you would need to choose your operating system based on where you think you'll get the most gains.
the other advantage of open source kernels is that the kernel can be stripped of uneccesary crap, and since hydra runs a chess engine only, this is ideal for maximising memory usage etc. i don't think you can do that (at least to the same extent) on any proprietary OS
i will concede that the use of 'linux' in the posts subject was unneccesary and excessive since it's not the primary governing factor when evaluating such a system, but i don't think the OS is 'meaningless'.
more of a spider question really. as most of you will remember, in the recent spider(-)man movie, peter can stick to walls by a mechanism similar to the one described above, with the little hairy claw thingees and all. however in the comic books spidey doesn't have the claws.
i distinctly remember two alternative explanations for this being provided. the first, is in a panel from an old issue (its his second fight with stilt man if that helps, the one where stilt man breaks into the research lab to rebuild his suit). ealier that day spidey/peter stops a bag snatcher on the subway by 'sticky grabbing' the guys jacket. in this panel there is a definate goo like substance twix sideys hand and the guys jacket.
problem solved right? wrong! see one must also consider the issue (from the whole sin-eater comes back crippled storyline) where electro discovers that spidey sticks to walls by electro magnetic adhesion, giving electro a distinct advantage in battle.
so how does spidey do it? how do spiders do it (i mean stick to walls you filthy minded child). please answer so i can get some sleep
i just finished an 18 shift on speed (no marathon but no walk in the park either)
had a lot of problems to solve, managed to get through them through brute force rather than inspiration, but today (the day after) i can't bring myself to focus on even the smallest of incidental problems left over from last night. i just sit here reading articles on slashdot that i would normally never look twice at.
besides which, i dont think illegal narcotics are going to be of much use to the guy asking the original question. depends what his staff are into i guess
