    It is all too easy to slam lawyers, but a lawyer is your best friend when you need one.

    You should be slamming the ignorant electorate that keeps electing these politicians that only care about getting elected, getting rich, and pleasing the rich.

    You can't waste a vote. A the only wasted vote is the one that wasn't exercised.

    The definition of government is: an organization with a monopoly on using force to enforce its decisions over a specified geographical area.

    If you haven't "delegated lethal force" to your government you don't have a government. Despite all your guns you are NOT allowed to use them legally to settle arguments. You can use them for sport and self defence - that is it. Only the government gets to use their guns to settle arguments.

    And no one in any usa government position has advocated "banning guns". Putting in place what the rest of the world looks on as basically ineffectual limitations is not a gun ban.

    We all love free speech zones. We all love going to jail for videoing the police. We all love border searches over a 100 miles from the border. We all love the TSA. I'm afraid you are not that far ahead, if ahead at all in the free speech arena.

    The USA has many faults. But I'm not worried about them nuking my country at random. I am worried NK might do that. Iran not so much, except for Israel.

    We demand Iran and NK give up their nukes because of real world politics and power struggles. Not morality.

    It depends on if they shorten the yellows or not.

    If they shorten the yellows then rear ending goes up. If they leave them alone it doesn't affect rear ending.

    We have red-light cameras at "hot spots", intersections with lots of red running mainly due to congestion. The red light cameras make these intersections safer. But we left the yellow length alone, and you have to drive through the light to get a ticket. You don't get a ticket for stopping a couple of feet late.

    The city doesn't get the money, it goes into the Provinces general revenue.

    In my Jurisdiction if you rear end someone it is your fault, 100%, no exceptions. The law says you must give enough space between you and the car in front of you that they can slam on their brakes at random at any time and you will be able to safely stop and not hit them.

    So, when is it not the fault of the person doing the rear ending?

    What about when the opposite happens; when the majority of state voters decide to not allow same sex marriage but the unelected judiciary orders it allowed anyway? Is that a failure of democracy?

    Well, more Americans favour gay marriage than oppose it. And one of the jobs of the judiciary is to throw out unconstitutional laws. I'm pretty sure the USA constitution has words to the effect that all people are equal.

    Given how productive we are these days the goal of the rich western nations should be a three day work week, of 5 hour days with lots of vacation time.

    There would be much less unemployment, workers would be happy, and there would be leisure time for spending and keeping the economy going.

    OK, maybe I exaggerate, but one day there will be NO work that machines can't do. It will be a bigger upheaval than the industrial revolution. It will end capitalism as we know it. I expect the transition to suck, but once that's over it will be GREAT.

    Canada did nothing. The police refused to file charges, and the Islam society dropped their case.

    Free speech doesn't include physically trying to stop people from entering a clinic. Refusing to do you job due to religious belief is also not freedom of speech.

    We have anti-hate speech laws. You can't incite violence against an "identifiable group". So you can say "I don't like X". You can't say "we should kill all the X."

    Are human beings the primary and most significant factor in the climate warming up? I don't think anyone has proven that. The Climate Change religion states that this is so but climatology scientists don't have nearly as much certainty.

    You don't think so, but 99% of actual climate scientists think so.

    We are not going back to hunter gathering unless we want about 75% of the world population to starve to death.

    Most poor countries are poor because they have horrible, evil, incompetent government. It has been proved over and over that where you have generally fair laws, honest government, and peace and order that people thrive. Where you have corruption, violence, and a lack of a civil society you have poverty.

    The poor will be more affected than the rich by global warming because they lack the resources to do anything about it.

    I prefer to let judges sort out what is a good sentence, and not the minimum set by a politician. Good and just sentencing is complex and should not be set by a simple law. The law should set a reasonable maximum and let the judges work it out.

    Three strike laws are too harsh if the three strikes are all for minor crimes. You should not get a life sentence for stealing a cookie (true case).

    Most civilize countries take appointing crown attorneys out of the hands of politicians and into the hands of bureaucrats so patronage is not an issue.

    The wife of a murder victim shouldn't have any say in the length of the sentence. She (or he if we reverse roles) would be much too emotionally involved to render a just sentence. That is why we have impartial courts.

    What system should replace the USA system of justice that jails more citizens per capita than any other western nation?

    • For starters:
    • get rid of long sentences for minor drug possession
    • Get rid of elected district attorneys so they can pursue justice instead of elections
    • Get rid of over broad laws with long sentences for minor crimes.
    • Get rid of 'three strikes' laws
    • Get rid of overly long minimum sentences

    In most of the world it IS illegal to bill people for goods or services they did not ask for. A large telecom outfit tried that up here in Canada a few years back and got sued into oblivion.

    People here damn well do intend to run red lights. Our red light cameras have made certain intersections, generally very busy ones, much safer. People don't run the red which is very dangerous, and our drivers don't panic on yellows and slam on the brakes. You only get a ticket if you enter on red, not yellow.

    The city gets nothing, the cameras are run by the province and the money goes into general revenue so there is no incentive to make the yellow short or do other unsafe things.

    I've listened to the Final Cut once. I found it so depressing I never listened to it again. I bet that vinyl is in great shape.

    I have to say I that I agree that most people have a handful of favourite albums they listen to a lot. I have eclectic taste in music and have about 600 cd's, but even I likely listen to about only 100 of those regularly.

    You do realize that at most retailers the credit surcharge is built into all prices and you are currently paying it on all purchases, even if you did not use credit.

    Currently most retailers are NOT allowed to even mention there is a credit surcharge as part of their agreemeent with the credit card companies. This new law allows merchants the option to break out the credit surcharge and allow the cash price to be lower which is much more fair.

    Most gun deaths are spur of the moment killings because someone lost their temper. You don't bring a gallon of gasoline to a card game because you might get mad and want to kill everyone. You do carry a gun for "protection". Almost NO mass killing are unplanned, so yes, gun control won't stop mass killings, but it does make them harder to do.

    The same legislation getting rid of the penny also makes rounding down on 1,2 cents the law. You may only round up on 3,4 cents. This only applies to CASH transactions.

    Cash registers are not going to show the rounded cost, there are going to show the actual cost. The rounding will be done manually IF you pay cash. The law stipulates rounding down for 1,2 and up for 3,4 cents.

    Nothing changes except your change. The government collects the same taxes, the merchants balance sheet is the same, the ONLY change is the FEW cash transactions.

    the price for iphones is not too high. You can tell it isn't too high because people are BUYING them.

    As a socialist Canadian, I seem to still better understand that a free market is still an important part of a healthy market. In a free market it is good to set your prices as high as the market will bear, especially for a luxury device. An iphone is not a life saving drug treatment. There is no ethical problem setting it's price high.

    Those crazy phone subsidies (low or zero dollar plans with higher monthly payments to pay for the phone) exist because so many people can't do math, and can't save money.

    We Canadians generally DO want the government to control guns. There is very strong support for our current gun control regime. We did just recently get rid of a "long run registry" as it was decided it was a waste of money that wasn't making anyone safer, but in general, we like the current balance our gun control laws provide.

    I thought the AR-15 was pretty much an M-16. How is that not a military assault rifle? Reading the wiki on the AR-15 it seems like a full out assault rifle to me.

    Too easy access to guns is a problem. If you flipp out and only have access to kitchen knives you might stab a few people, but you are very unlikely to kill 30. With a gun killing is easy.

    It isn't just too many guns, but also a very cavalier attitude to gun safety. To often you read about the wrong people easily getting a hold of legal guns that are not stored safely in the USA.

    The other issue is cultural - the belief that using a gun to protect yourself and solve problems involving people is a-ok. We have guns in Canada, but I don't know a single person, gun owner or not, who would consider using a gun for anything other than hunting or target shooting. Guns are not tools used against people up here unless you are a criminal. We call the police.
