    IANAL, but I'm sure a pro can find a few nicely worded offenses commited by this company (Breaking the freedom of choosing its employer, being considered as a serf belonging to the company while slavery has been abolished for some time, moral prejudice for unneeded sufferings, cruelty (in group), libel (?), being an asshole (NOT A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT, even if 2 centuries of practice make most american think it is), intimidation, unheeded meddling in someone's affairs, etc ...

    Anyhow, if they want to play dumb, he should just play harder...

    The videos from youtube might play @ 1 or 2 fps because the tablet is used to decode the video frames.

    Would it be possible to turn the n800 into a passive receiver, all decoding done somewhere on a server and only the frames displayed on the tablet ? =>strong central computer and "passive" receptor... I'm sure I saw it somwhere, maybe in vlc ?

    Would be ideal @home where I have some computing power available...

    Still no strong IR emitter to turn the tablet into a universal remote... Anyone knows of a 8-10 meters SD IR emitter ?

    BTW, you forgot something :

    As this part of the story is the only one that is remotely of interest to me (Mac Controlled Roomba ! Wow ! at last ! my dreams are fulfilled ! and I can now die at peace knowing humanity has reached its peak !)

    Do any of you know of a robotic toy to amuse the cat ? The Roboraptor Robotic Dinosaur is very nice, but it lacks the ability to going back on its feets on its own. Knowing my cat, I think i'd have to reset it upright every 5/10 seconds.

    I'm looking at something that could be "autonomous", can stand upright by itself, and is more or less cat-proof so my cat can have something to play with while I'm at work.

    I thought about robotic insects that look for dark places and are shy of movements, but don't really want cockroachs at home, even robotic ones.

    So, any Idea ? (except of course a mac controlled Roomba, please...)

    use the nifty little tool provided with XP, msconfig...

    try Start, then Execute, then type "msconfig" and enter.

    Then you remove all the services you don't need at startup.

    My parents newly delivered, Dell installed XP went from 90s boot time to a bit less than 50s, login included.
    And I couldn't believe how much crap Dell installs on a virgin system.

    IANAO (I am not an optician) but as far as I know, the proper exercises can fortify your eyes and even ameliorate your vision.

    The biggest problem with reading (and computers, also) is CONTRAST.

    Black on white is awful on your eyes. A yellowish or brownish page with blue ink would do marvels for your extenuated sight. Black on White will just strain it more and more.

    just to shift the debate a bit...

    Ethanol and bio-fuel pollute a little bit less, but do still exhaust CO2.

    The cleanest alternative seems to come from a little known company that created a compressed air motor. They use it in conjuction with a standard engine for starting the vehicle

    Few pollution whatsoever, you need a little bit of electricity to run a compressor, and get almost 2000 km in one go...

    Maybe we should start getting interested in the technology, the drawback in electric cars being the pollution you create in actually producing the batteries and the electricity to feed them.

    Also, as it uses very few fuel, the big petrol/car companies doesn't show any interest in the technology...

    True, that is why I still give 1 gig Swap partition to the systems, so I have some time for the replacement ram to get in.
    but my memory monitoring system is quite simple : if swap used > 0, mail the admin.

    So, to answer the original question :
    Optimal amount of Swap ? 0 !

    Even my old PIII 1Ghz takes 2 gigs of ram. Newest system we have at the office takes 64 Gigs.

    => right now I consider the Linux systems @ work as having a problem if they use swap...

    Adding just a wee bit of RAM to your system and seeing swap disappear means your perfomance just exploded on this particular task...

    Cost is announced @ 70 Euro / month, no caps...

    Right now I have a 24 Mb DSL for 30 Euro/month. I regularly max up the connection.

    In September the fiber offer will be available in my district, I will have to upgrade to PCI-x or something and get a 2 GB fiber card for the router. 4Gb cards are still too expensive, and that network is not scheduled for 4,5 GB internet till 2010.

    Sad, no, when the most recent and speedy computer in the room is your router...

    Well, I'm ready : Bring on the Pain !!!

    I might even re-think about providing a small web-hosting solution to friends and customers...

    I've been one of the monkey luggage handler during a piss poor summer.

    We hated the hard case people, giving us a 10 pound metal luggage containing almost nothing
    We loathed the guy that put his guitar in a soft case
    We despised the fellow that was sending a FULL FRIDGE home
    We took the name of everyone on that bastard jumping team THAT HAD THEIR JUMPING POLES IN A TOO SMALL CARGO HOLD

    There is no real solution. Get a full metal case, use foam to pad the essentials, get 2/3 exotic locks and make sure you can spend 2-3 hours in the airport after you landed.

    and shave your beard...
