The EA "NASCAR Thunder" series is not as popular among the drivers as the Papyrus n2k3 sim. Unfortunately, EA has acquired sole rights to the franchise, so this year's Papy version will be the last. There are a great deal of addons for it already--new tracks, Busch and Craftsman Truck Series mods, etc.
Quite a few of the drivers play the game, especially for practice on the non-oval road courses. They describe the physics as being pretty close to the real thing. Some race online, most notably Dale Earnhardt Jr who has participated in several league races.
I bet the Ft Worth station was WBAP 820 AM. At night you can hear their "US 1 Truckin' Show" all over the country. And I remember picking up Chicago's WLS and several others late at night in the past.
Someone with better technical knowledge could probably do a more thorough job of explaining, but from what I'm told it has to do with the angle that AM radio waves bounce off the ionosphere. Since it's not as sharp a degree, the signal "comes back down" farther away.
Even the outrage around this case won't be enough to get through the "evil hacker" bias of the press. Rants such as this, although valid in concept, won't be enough to overcome the stigma associated with "cybercrime".
Don't be afraid of the whole "first post" mentality, as you say. Embrace it. It's beautiful. "The human drama of athletic competition", as they used to say on old TV sports shows.
You have achieved something. Revel in it. Wallow in it. The fp is YOURS! Savor your triumph, untainted by uncertainty. It's a GOOD THING(TM).

Nobody mentioned this? It's hella swank. You can be a Marine or a VC sapper or whatever:
Tour of Duty (yet another Half-Life mod, but a good one)
Day of Defeat is cool, but I dunno if the WWII motif is gonna help them as much as, say, the Desert Combat BF1942 mod would...
"The Dilbert Hole". Now *that's* a Dilbert parody!
Original site was shut down, but it's still findable out there...somewhere...
