The move by Nokia, maker of one of every three mobile phones sold globally, takes aim at computer software giant Microsoft, which said earlier on Monday it was offering phone makers a standard kit of software and computer chips to build new "smartphones."

As far as screen quality goes, the Handspring Prism wins hands down in the low resolution category, while the new Sony Clie color wins in the high res. (320x320, same as the Wince devices). As I said, I'm looking to buy a PDA, and I've tested several devices in the last couple of weeks.

    Now, for your itemized list:
    - Yes, you can play video on your Palm, even thought the reason why escapes me. Try this one
    - The new Sony will allow you to play music, though not in MP3 format (it uses a different, probably MPAA-approved format).
    - There are zillions of applications for the Palm that will let you open Office files on the Palm. You can edit them too.
    - There are also many proper browsers. Handspring just bought one, and is bundling it with some of their products. How many non-IE browsers are available for Wince? Not many I guess...

Now, you reference to "out of the box" is just what Microsoft wants. It wants you to feel "confortable" with whatever they provide. They want to literally "own" you, so you don't go out and look for the applications that better suit you. Why would you go out and test other applications if you have "everything that you need" (read: everything that MS thinks is good enough for you) out of the box?

None of what was said were lies, much on the contrary. You're the one spewing the lies and misconceptions.

The bottom line is that the PalmOS is much like Unix, offering you more choices (10000 pieces of software are there to prove it), and everybody knows Microsoft's stance when it comes to giving users a choice...

Perl code can be unreadable (aka "obfuscated"), but it can also be plain simple and clean. That's the beauty of it, you (the programmer) make the code as clean as you want. Larry Wall is right: if you don't like it, you simply don't "see it". Forget Perl, and go play with something "easy".
