  1. why bother with messy biomatter at all? on Tiny Aircraft Feeds Itself With Dead Flies · · Score: 1

surely a tiny aircraft could land on a high tension wire and 'fuel' itself off the magnetic field.
it's been a while since physics201 but the inductance from the magnetic fields already occuring everywhere would be a potential power source.

While your argument has merit, let me tell you of what almost was...

Almost 2 years ago the computing direction of the engineering school was pretty much undeterminded.
Was our future in solaris, nt, linux? Then there
was a strong push towards NT. This was mostly fueled by the non-engineering side of the school for whatever reason. One key point that was used to push NT was that Autocad, a mainstay of engineers everywhere, was no longer going to be available for UNIX. So a development inititive towards an NT solution with a Netware back end
    was begun.

I feared greatly for the future of
engineering students learning in an NT environment...

At least with the linux inititive my faith is restored. At least the next generation of students will have a clue when it comes to linux/unix.

  8. Re:a good thing. on NCSU/Red Hat "Open Source University" · · Score: 2

The why is easy. Redhat is headquartered "right up the road" from NCSU. Not to mention several of the
former admins/developers from NCSU have gone to
    Redhat.

As a former student and someone who has seen both
the early attemps and the current incarnation of the workstations just let me say i'm very impressed. Both redhat staff and the hardworking
NCSU staff have put together a very nice system.
An amazing thing has been done with these machines. Completely integrated into the existing
AFS system and functionally very similar to the
existing solaris machines that the students are familiar with.

Like the man says, you may not like Redhat but this relationship between NCSU and Redhat has wonderful potential. I can already imagine the
boost to enrollment in the comp sci/comp eng schools.

  9. Re:$60?? on How Do Companies Pay for "On-Call" Support? · · Score: 1

When i worked for a local university we were on call for a week at a time on about a 2 month rotation. Between 5pm and 8am on the weekdays we
received 90 cents an hour for being on call. On weekend we were paid the full 24 hours. This worked out to about $100 in our paychecks. Now i've gone private sector and again i'm on call.
Now i get paid nothing for being on call. Seems rather rediculous that we are required to be in town and available for a week and are not compensated in any way.

Hmmpphh.. I love Stewart as much as anyone, but is anyone concerned that he is being pushed away by Hollywood? He is a very fine Shakespearian actor, but the only movies he does are ST movies and cheesy action flicks like this. It's amazing how a successful TV show will destroy your acting career. I hope he's still doing a lot of Shakespeare.....

Folks, keep in mind we didn't find out vader was lukes father until Empire. Its possible C3PO never did find out.
As for technology, I believe in the 40 years(?)
between EP I and EP 4 there's a galactic war, the clone wars, as well as Palpatine overthrowing the republic and becoming Emperor AND Vader killing off all the Jedi, the protectors of the Realm. This leaves open the possibility of widespread conflict between races/star systems going unchecked. War has a way of setting things back after all.
