Maybe this is a bit obvious, but maybe your ISO download has a bit wrong someplace, or burned improperly. Did you get the image again and reburn it?

My thoughts exactly. In addition you might want to make sure that your CDROM drive is using PIO rather than DMA.

Where I used to work we wrote our own installer software rather than using InstallShield. Our installer validated the data it read off the CD as part of the installation. We had a customer that complained that our software wasn't installing yet he could install everything else. It turned out that on his computer (that came in a cow box) had the CD set to use DMA and this was the cause of his problems.

We ran tests and found that on some machines (his and others) it was a frequent occurance for a few bits to get flipped at the end of *large* transfers if using DMA. We were curious about why he could install other software so we took some InstallShield packages and intentionally corrupted them -- they still installed just fine.

Scary! CDROM && DMA == bad

Or worse, what if the Windows EULA was changed to explictly forbid running it in an emulated virtual machine? That would kill VirtualPC, VMware, and plex86 all with one fell swoop -- and drive a lot of users back to the Windows platform.

MS wouldn't do that. They are big users of VMware themselves -- even they realize what an awesome tool it is. Besides virtual machines still need to run a licensed copy of the OS to be truely legit. If you are running an illegal copy of Windows under VMware you are still running an illegal copy of Windows. More VMware sessions == more licenses.

Perfect digital form? What a joke. MPEG-2 is far from a perfect form -- it's lossy!!!

I have been a DirectTV subscriber for several years now and watched the visual quality degrade as they added local programming. If you don't give MPEG-2 enough bandwidth it can look very bad. Every time I hear a digital content provider chime in with a term such as "digital clarity" I transform it into "digital artifacting" and chuckle inside. The same is true when people talk of DVDs.

Funny thing is that parts of the opening ceremonies of the olympics had some very noticable artifacting (to me anyway) and I receive local programming the old fashioned way. I guess the networks are using MPEG-2 streams to feed affiliates.

Actually, according to a guy who is selling his, this car is just the ticket if you are an extrovert or an introvert looking to meet someone new because everyone flocks to the thing.

Seriously though, this is a commuter vehicle -- not an only means of transportation. I'd love to have one. I could probably justify $10-12k to my wife but it would need to be a two seater cost any more.

I wouldn't run anything based on RH 7.0. Presumably every user mode binary is compiled with a compiler that generates questionable code. Add to that an error in standard headers (limits.h and things it includes) that was used to compile those same binaries and erroneously defines some constants as though your on a 64 bit system even when you are really 32 bit and you have a *very* scary situation. When I have time I'm going to demand that RH send me a free 7.1 since I *paid* for a 7.0 that is sooo scary and bad. (BTW, I bought the workstation edition and it wouldn't run the StarOffice software that was part of the package without an update to glibc -- how bad is that?? Aren't they supposed to test this stuff?)

  13. Interoperability problems? Really?? on Bluetooth Bombs · · Score: 2

Interesting... At I type this, I am using an Intel bluetooth pcmcia card in my laptop (purchased because they are proud to say they have a linux driver) and it is transmitting to my DLink WAP (purchased because it was cheap). No problems.

I've also ready *many* user reviews of various WAPs and a lot of people make it a point that they are using different brands of pcmcia cards with no problems. (And yes, I've seen at least a half dozen brands mentioned.) This would seem to indicate that if there are problems they are not widespread and may be limited to a few (possibly smaller) manufacturers.

Meanwhile I love being untethered and would never go back. It was a great investment and my wife agrees.
