data sets representing real snapshots of portions of the web
If these are snapshots then you'll need to keep downloading them for your Page Rank system to be up to date. The web is constantly changing and therefore so is Page Rank. I can't see having a data set on your computer being all that usefull as it'll soon expire.
It would be far better to be able to link to a data set via XML and query it. That way you would have live upto the minute Page Ranks. I know that Google already does a live Page Rank system, but being able to access it and query it would be usefull.
Get a copy of Open Office. Its free and successfully opens doc, xls and ppt files. It runs on Windows and Linux.
I use Windows XP with Open Office. This is because I get any Microsoft Software except Office and Games for free because my university department (University of Hull, Department of Computer Science) has made some dodgy deal with them.
Loads of students want office, I just point out: use open office. Thats what I use and its great. It also works just as well under Lindows or Linux. Use Mozilla (like I do) as your mail client and you can just click on attatchments and open them. Again that also works in Linux or Lindows as well as Windows.
I tried to use my Palm PDA for note-taking but found that it took too long to enter text using Grafiti. I've found Paper and Pen much better and far more flexible.
As for doing work in the labs as opposed to back home/dorm - I totally agree. I'm in my second year studying computer science at the University of Hull, UK.
Being removed from the distractions of music, IM and TV, I can actually concentrate on what I'm supposed to be doing!
I use a desktop to do work, it can be easily upgraded and I was able to build it myself.
Pen and Paper are used for note taking and keeping track of where I'm supposed to be when. Pen and Paper are still the most versatile pieces of hardware.
I'm a student in Hull, England, UK. Hull has its own telephone company, Kingston Communications. It used to be owned by the city council but is now half privatised.
The problem is - it has a total monopoly, that is unlike BT it has no competition. However its DSL service is very good but I'm paying £35 per month for it, though I share this with my housemates. So its a pricey but quality service.
I would like to see some competition here from the likes of BT, NTL and others. However OFTEL or OFCOM or whatever they're called now have banned any competition because Kingston Communications are too small and would be crushed by the competition! I say let it be, if they get crushed then thats market forces at work.
How do you prevent the mineral oil making contact with the motherboard? Could you use vegetable oil instead as it too is good at transferring heat, that is why it is used in cooking?
Stirling engine's are very efficient but they are hard to implement into a moving veichle. As far as I know, no one is doing research into it, which is a shame.
Well I'm suprised you guys havn't taken to diesel. It isn't that bad these days, petrol engines do have better acceleration but less power but thanks to improved in car computer systems this isn't that bad as fuel and air regulated to ensure a good mix. I guess the problem is that in the states fuel prices are so dirt cheap that there is no point using diesel. In the UK, fuel before tax is cheaper than in the states but after tax is a lot more. Here it is approximatelly 80p ($1.28) per litre! That is £3.60 ($5.76) per gallon, making anything that is cheaper worth while. So all the goverment does is put less tax on diesel and then hey presto it is worth the reduced acceleration because it is so much cheaper to run.

When these Web Graph or Page Rank things are drawn up which sites do they use as the roots?
I mean they've got to start with some site(s) and then go through each link from there.
BST is British Summer Time. Its one hour ahead of GMT and is what the UK is currently on.
I agree GMT should have been quoted in the original post as its easier for everyone to work out their individual times.
For those in the UK, it should be on at 1am tonight.
I just tried to make a video loop in Open Office Impress and you're right it doesn't work. It will play a video but I can't get it to loop.
I've said this before and I'll say it again.

PS. Enjoy your coffee.
Hopefully this will be as good as their OGG audio codec. I think its great cos the file sizes are smaller than MP3 yet the quality is just as good!
:)
Keep up the good work

It's 97% of the population. Vodafone has 99.9% of the population. They never show the stats for land area.
You're correct. Manx telecom which is a subsidery of BT has been trialing 3G phones on the Isle Of Man, UK for a few weeks.

lol! you've got a good point there. it would be better if it were a local chinese company instead of the constant globalisation machine of AOL.
