The extensions MS made to their own version of Java Virtual Machine must be causing these hacks. Since these extensions of Microsoft is not called Java(remember the long lawsuit), it is lame to blame 'Java'.

3) My largest concern with this, and I didn't notice Miguel addressing it there or in the followups, is the patent issue. My worst fear is everything would go incredibly well with mono: diverse compilers, robust libraries, etc. and we would all start to build code around it, and then about 5 years down the line Microsoft whips out a patent and demands royalties for all the labor that we have done under the illusion that it would be free.
Yes, obviously, that would be the Microsoft's plan. They will increase their user base using Mono, and then dump them with a patent after 5 years or so. Everybody will go for the Microsoft's patented version. As a result, Miguel is dreaming if he thinks otherwise.
Well said, exactly what I think. This meanningless Microsoft bashing must stop. Crying out will not make microsoft any less sucessful. Start doing something innovate and beat microsoft that way instead of geeking around microsoft and its products in any occasions. Active scripting and Java scripting is used by millions of Web sites.
That is unfortunately illegal my friend. How about reverse engineering Pentium 4 and build another one with another name and sell it for 50% less that what Pentium 4 costs? can you do that?
There is a very fatal misundestanding in the open source community that people thinks it is all their right to get a commercial software reverse it and make it open source. This is a very big mistake; it is no different than the Pentium example I have given above. You will be prosecuted by any means by the company who owns the intellectual rights to the software, and I think they have all the rights to do so. If you are impotent of producing a software from scratch, It is better you stay away from open source development.
Do it yourself and make it open source; if you can of course.
Linux owes its over pumped popularity to recently sucked out Internet companies. Well, many of them made their choice towards Linux servers because they were cheap. Now that era is over, who is gonna use Linux? of course the Linux community will continue to use it like those times it was not this much popular. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that Linux companies out there will make it another year. Their sales are flattened like the internet balloon did. Not much to say, Linux is still welcome within its community like any other free software. However, Linux as Desktop choice of the future, not in a million change with X window System.

I agree with your opinions and concerns over BSD development throughout the years since the 4.4BSD-Lite made public. All the BSD variations were doomed years ago because the developers of these variations have lacked of a new ground up kernel design and development. All they have done was to cream up some kernel modules, add swampy device drivers and pretend like elite kernel hackers. There is no significant improvement for any of the original kernel code inherited from big'ol 4.4BSD-Lite. A kick-ass(!) monolitic kernel and a UC-Berkeley left over device driver architecture lacking all the topological efficiency and flexibility. On the other hand, I am not very optimistic about the future of over popular Linux either. Its design no better than BSD, even worse in some parts. Dont get me wrong, I think that Linux was a tremendous achivement but doomed to the oblivion when Linus didnt want to get some good advice for his over optimistic and monolitic OS design. He could have used some help at the beginning;however, superego for a fast OS to run on a 20Mhz computer at the time has taken over the entire architecture of Linux. Look over the internet Linus versus famous OS professors.
Here is a 1992 conversation between linus and Tenanbaum. You judge it.

If you fail to adopt what is new out there, you are "OBSOLETE", period.
Don't be fooled! Just say no to X.

Let me see your resume first, then I will try to give you some hints on becoming a succesful software architect.
Well, I believe I made my point tough, didnt I?
