  1. hell no - my speech is free thank you on First, Do No Harm - A Hippocratic Oath for Coders? · · Score: 1

why should i be restricted from from putting my ones and zeroes on a magnetic piece of metal somewhere? how are you going to enforce this hippocratic oath? CODE IS SPEECH. whether you like it or not, no two ways about it. The way I look at it, it's like an artist on the canvas, crossed with a mathemetician's equations. If you don't think a program does good, don't code it, it's your perrogative no matter what. But don't restrict others from coding software that they want to code.

  2. My Zone on Finding the Programming Zone? · · Score: 1

My zone involves a 6-pack of Cherry Coke (or Dr. Pepper, or Root Beer) A box of crackers, party mix, goldfish, etc. Xmms open with my playlist (a good trance song really gets me coding). I like my blinds closed with as little glare as possible. And probably my doors closed so that I have fewer distractions. It is also good (though not required) for it to be very late at night. I do like some background light, but just no glare. Non-Flourescent over-head lights really do the trick. It is also a necessity that I've got a good project to work on. I don't get into coding unless I'm genuinely interested in what I am coding. If all the above requirements are met, by the time I am halfway done my second cherry coke and a quarter of the way done my goldfish, I am riveted by what appears on the screen and won't get up until I've either got to pee real bad, or am being yelled at by roommates.

Why does /. have to concentrate on this film? Sure, it was certainly the most popular on /., but it would have been nice if you had said something like "A Beautiful Mind got the awards for best picture and best director." I dare say that A Beautiful Mind is also a film that alot of nerds found good. I mean, the movie is about a mathemetician who wins the nobel prize for pete's sake. And there were loads of other movies that the /. crowd really seemed to like as well.

This will probably get modded down as flamebait or troll, but whatever.

Books on the security of WAP or something like that. Books that focus on the security of different implementation of only one layer of the 7 layer OSI model. 18. Re:planning to buy a riovolt myself on Review: Nex II CF MP3 Player · · Score: 2, Informative

I have a riovolt. It's really great, the skip protection is amazing, you can switch it from 40 seconds to 100 seconds (only with MP3s) but 100 secs take up more power. It's got a great interface, supports folders, etc. And you can use CD-RWs. Which is a really great feature, because if you format it for packet writing you can dynamically take songs off and on as you like. It's also got upgradeable firmware. (Which is a great feature). My only problem with it is that sometimes MP3 CDs are really slow to load. It can be between 10 and 20 seconds after you press play for the you to hear music. Perhaps this is fixed in the latest firmware version, but I haven't upgraded in a while.

  19. My major problem with this movie... on Review: Black Hawk Down · · Score: 2, Insightful

I saw this movie on friday night. I had two major problems with it.

    1) No character development - you never really established a connection with one character or another, part of the reason this was a problem was that there were too many characters it seemed, and to me they all looked pretty much the same, because they all have the standard military buzz cut.

    2) Too much action - I like action movies, I really do, but there was just too much action and not enough plot in this movie. Going along with the whole character thing, you never really knew which characters were doing what where. I came out of the movie rather confused.

The movie seemed to have had a very good message, but all that got lost in the scores of characters and events going on.
