Your polarised view of people that use flash vs HDD players is a little narrow.
I wouldn't take a HDD based player jogging and I sure wouldn't listen to 80 gb of music between dockings in day to day life. I would only consider a HDD player if I were to travel for 2 years without a PC.
No I don't think that's right. Not that I'm an authority on this subject nor am I from your part of the world but I'd say as long as the police were in his apartment legally (e.g. they had a warrant for whatever reason) and they spotted anything that could implicate him in a crime (like a brick of coke or several dead bodies) then I'd say they could charge him with new offences and use whatever they found as evidence.
My take on this philosophical argument is that the only important thing to a person is how they feel about an event or thing. If you could magically make it so that all that makes you happy is to see the colour blue, and when you see anything with the colour blue you feel fulfilled, is that a good or bad thing?
Part of me thinks that would be a fantastic thing. If all we want is to fell fulfilled then why not take the 'magic-love-all-blue-things' pill? On the other hand, isn't it a bit demeaning for someone's life to be devoid of all meaning except for the desire to see the colour blue?
If a girl is raped and the rapist magically makes it so that she no longer cares that she was raped, he's still a rapist regardless of how the victim feels about it. He still should go to jail and serve his punishment.
Once he's been dealt with, though, is it right to expect the victim to suffer the trauma for the rest of her life? The rapist's crime is still bad because of the intent, not the result.
I personally don't like the idea of citizens being allowed to have guns so easily or to be allowed to carry them around...
BUT
When talking about The U.S.A., I think it's at a point where you can't go back to no guns. The guns laws in The U.K. and Australia work great but probably would be a disaster if they were to be introduced in America.
I think he's trying to say that if this is how his company's management sees it, so will all other companies. I sort of imagined that's what would happen.
I think there exists an attribute that a song must have for more people to like it. That's what makes a hit, the amount of people that like the song.
Non-mainstream music usually appeals to people have been listening to that style for a long time. For example I don't listen to heavy metal or thrasher music, but I like Refuse Resist by Sepultura (sp?). Why is that? I think it's because that song has the magic attribute that makes it palatable to non-metal-heads (the genereal music listening public).
Ironically, these types of song won't appeal to the fans that listen to that type of music a lot because it's too 'mainstream'.
I think, in theory, it's possible to have an algorithm to detect this 'magic attribute' in a song and rate the song's mainstream potential, but it'd be real complicated.
You couldn't take into account things like nostalgia.
It's sort of like writing an algorithm to detect how funny a joke is. In theory you could, but you'd have to have so many factors (eg current rumours) that it's impractical.
I'm not being sarcastic here (although I do shake my head), but they are a company that makes money. The way they used to make money was by releasing their OS in increments (... 3.*, 95, 98, 2K, ME) every few years. But it's getting ridiculas as people own one of their OSes for a year before the new one comes out. Their customers sit on their old versions for years before upgrading...
So how do MS make sure that they have a sustainable income? They create an OS that is ever changing, "Rent your software!".
Ok, if they had come up with that idea in 1995, then they would have achieved their sustainable income (with minimal effort) and be on easy (easier) street. But they have to get rid of these older OSes that people won't upgrade. How do they make people go to XP? Start cutting out support of course!
So in a few years, XP will be it, MS can maintain their income with minimal effort and the hardware industry will we happy supplying new PCs for an ever growing OS that will make older PCs whine and cripple under its fluffiness...
I guess the point is that it's business. That is the whole deal with capitalism. I'm not a communist, I'm just baffled at everyone's amazment at this issue. It's a dog eat dog world and MS the fattest dog... for now..
Here in Australia the reputation of the U.S. FBI is formed solely through movies and television. So you can understand how someone like myself (who lives in Queensland, Australia) has the impression that the FBI like to barge into places and get convictions.
This story has made me think "maybe the FBI are all crazy..."
"Oh, you think your innocent of the charges? Well, that can be decided in court... welcome to the concept of innocent until proven guilty".
I'm sure that the federal officers involved in this situation were thinking "if this guy didn't really hack, but honestly found this misconfiguration by mistake, his attorney will argue it in court and he'll walk".
FAIR ENOUGH? Simply inditing someone doesn't mean their definately going to jail, but they get inconvienced to the max. $10K to prove you're innocent? More than a year of your life filled with stress, wondering if you are going to spend a few more years under probation or even jail?
I'm sorry, but that is crap. Just because these feds didn't know jack about the situation (I can only conclude that the didn't fully understand the situation as anyone that does understand the problem wouldn't want this guy prosectuted) this good samaritan goes down.
And no, I am not anti-American. Federal law enforcement in Australia isn't too far behind. Prosecution hungry feds like to run amuck here too.

That's like 10 seconds a year of non-repetitiveness!!

Oh ffs Gates never said that!

... or did everyone in the world become a computer user/music downloader over night?
...
Not everyone has a PC and not everyone get's their taste of new music from the interent.
In fact I would say that most people hear music on the radio then either buy the CD or download the mp3.
I doubt that services iTunes will make radio stations disappear
