Each state contracts a company that any contractor digging is legally required to call before they do any digging. This company then contacts the utilities that say they have underground lines in that area. Thats what Digsafe is, a call center.

Then each utility is repsonsible for marking where there underground facilities are. Some do it themself and some contract through a locating company. Those are the people you see marking.

One of the products my company has is the mapping software used by Digsafe (and Ct and KY).

It lists several, including most of the ones listed here and tells the prices, shipping location and current specials.

Two Sites listed there look interesting to me:

    RentZero

They are located in Bellaire, TX which is almost a third the distance of all the CA shippers from me, and they ship manuals. A quick look seemed to show they had a decent number of games. No idea if the are any good though.

Another in Texas is Angel Gamer It seems to have a smaller supply though but its the closest to me.

  8. Hard to hide from from Slashdot Stalkers on What Can You Find Out About Yourself, Online? · · Score: 3

A few weeks ago I got a call from work from slashdot's very own emmett, which suprised me. I'd meet at Linuxfest (it was the best (and unfortunately only) Linux Tradeshow I've been to) , but didn't think I'd gave him my card.

When I asked him how he found it, he said he found my resume online (The only copy with that work number though was on a friends server with out any outside links to it (that I could remember))

He asked me to verify my address so he could send me something he said. (I hoped for something that didn't tick), but since I haven't got anything , (except for Credit Card application) I'm sure there is a Slashdot conspiracy and they are secretly compiling a list of contact information of all there readers, for some nefarious Vandover purpose.

I guess the moral to this story, is if you want to keep your privacy, be careful what you put online, as it is there forever, (with mirrors and search engines). That and never tell emmett your home address.

  9. The Article Misses the Point on Open Source Leaders Speak About Napster · · Score: 1

Yes, copyrighted music is being transferred over Napster.

And though I may agree that the uses mentioned so far don't hurt anyone:
ie using to sample songs to buy later, or saving the time to burn from your own CD's

They are still illegally transfer copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright holder.

But the reason Napster should be protected, is just because a technology can be used to break the law, the technology, should not be illegal or banned.

I think Metallica sounded like idiots in there sound bite about napster, but it is their music, and they have the right to say what can be done with it.

But they shouldn't blame Napster for it. Giving someone the opportunity to do wrong, should not be wrong. We have the abilty and the knowlege to chose right or wrong, we shouldn't limit our freedoms, because they could be used for wrong.

Should you sue Ford or Budweiser or the City, because a drunk driver using their car, beer, and roads, hit them?

And don't whine, that when you get caught doing something wrong, that its not illegal, because you feel it shouldn't be.

The main one was the suprise ending, where Ender has been fighting the buggers, thinking it was only a game.

And the fantasy game, which gives the conduit the Buggers need to contact Ender.

Also Valentine and Peter taking over the world, a very important subplot if not "visual interesting".

The number of availabel jobs is not the only reason to chose a vocation. When I was 12 and first starting playing with computers, I didn't think boy there will be a lot of jobs in this when I grow up.

I can think of at least three reasons why people would want this degree:

    1. Games are fun, and Game programming would be fun.

    2. Chance of recognition, like John Romero, kinda the some reason people code open source (according to The Cathedral and Bazaar)

    3. Chance to make a lot more money then regular programmers.

I have no knowledge how true these are, but people getting this degree would be more concerned with these then the number of (possible boring) programming job are availble
