Considering the amazing amount of interest at hammering away on MS products, this new "shift in focus" will either wind up producing one of the most sercure set of products ever(highly doubtful, IMO) or it will be a long, drawn out, yet abysmal failure as each new change becomes defeated as fast as its implemented.
Either way, its going to take quite a while to tell.
That's all well and good, and I agree with what you've said to some extent. However, the fact that companies are developing into these worker-unfriendly beasts is destroying the work ethic of those they employ. Why should any employee have any loyalty to a company that has no loyalty to them? I sure don't. Treat me like a serf and I'm taking the next good offer I get.
Given those conditions I fail to see why anyone would waste their time and effort doing any more than enough not to get fired, especially if they could be shown the door any day even if they were busting their arse all the time.
Companies exist to make money, they do so by producing products/services. They require workers to produce those products/services. Crappy treatment of the workforce by the company leads to poor quality products/services, which leads to less profit for company. Leading to even crappier treatment of the workers in order to bolster profit margin. Repeat until someone in upper management realizes that the company is a whole organism and as such must treat all parts of it well in order to succeed.
Personally I'm inclined to wait for the OLED displays I keep hearing rumors about. They should be at least as good and much cheaper (and lighter) because they don't need a backlight. LCD's are still just to pricey when I can get a decent 19" CRT for about $300.
So these things generate an electrical charge. What if they are injested or otherwise enter some water dwelling creature? What happens if they wind up in neural tissue? This just sounds like a bad idea.
At what point will some create an analogy quick reference card for these people. This is so stupid I may have a stroke. How is this ANY different from sneaker netting a VHS tape? I know its technically a broadcast, but from a REALISTIC standpoint? Big deal, my neighbor just MIGHT be able to pick it up, or he could just ask to borrow a videotape.
Somehow Jobs' remarks always seem to jumpstart my brain, if nothing else. Of the first iMac he said "It looks like it's from another planet". And oddly enough my first reaction to the new iMac after reading the article was "Hey, its a skutter holding an LCD!". That makes alot more sense if you've ever seen Red Dwarf.
Admittedly it is a cool design, but I can't help feeling once again, that NO ONE is out there designing anything targeted at me and I'm left to hunt for obscure parts vendors and try to cobble together something that appeals to me.
Personally I'd just like some more variety in the choices available to me, especially if that means machines that fit in seamlessly with my existing home electronics.
Um, upwards of $1300 for DVD recording ability is not "comsumer" electronics.

Were you aware that most SUV aren't even 4-wheel drive? Why bother. I'm frankly sick of being able to out drive anyone, but paying higher insurance, and only ever being able to afford a junk-heap for myself. Its too easly to get a license in this country and I'm tired of you yuppie couples and your rodent children. Get off the road.

Maybe its just me, but the concept of "war without sacrifice" sounds like simple tyranny and oppression. If it isn't worth risking your own neck over, then it isn't worth a war. Furthermore, you may kill every living thing in a given area but you will NEVER defeat an enemy until you put a man in the mud to hold the ground and control the population.
Worst case scenario as I see it is that the legal authorities conclude that the individual who purchases encrypted media (like DVD) does not actually have authorized access, only the officially licensed player does. And if something like that comes about, we're all basically screwed.
For example, lets say you have a legally licensed broadcast medium in country A (say a radio station or satelite Tv setup). Your broadcast location is close to neighboring country B, who have a much more strict legal system and what is legal to broadcast in your location is not legal in theirs. HOWEVER, if citizens of nation B decide to tune their radios or switch their channels to your broadcast frequency (read: type URL xxx.xxx.xxx or click a certain link) then how can the legal establishment of country B claim jurisdiction over your content, broadcast from country A. Perhaps by treaty, or some other arrangement, but not otherwise. Country B may take steps to limit its citizens from receiving your content, which should be well within their right to do, but they should not be allowed to dictate the legality of content legally broadcast from other sovereign nations. Would you honestly enjoy a spin through the legal machine of a Taliman style government because photos of your family vacation at the beach are illegal to view in Afghanistan, for example? Remember that the internet is largely everyone's personal tv/radio station, with essentially a global reach.
If they can't do anything about broadcast radio propaganda etc, why should they be able to claim jurisdiction over web traffic? The parallels are pretty close.
I'm frankly curious to see how this might play out and IANAL but, that said, what if MD or VA residents were to comment to this "gentleman", perhaps bring his recent notariety to his attention and suggest he apologize post haste. However all mail sent from VA and MD should contain a quick little blurb, at the bottom, something along the lines of: "With reply to this email, [rude spamming moron] and [his company] agree to payment of US $1000 to [sender] per [MD/VA] UCITA."
Any laywer folk out there think this may hold water in a legal arena against spam folk?
That's one of the most idiotic things to come out of the Clinton years. I am NOT responsible for YOUR kid. He/she is YOURS. YOU chose to accept the responsibility. I don't recall you asking me if our little "village" could handle another kid.
And if I am somehow responsible for the care and upbringing (aside from the taxes I already pay for school, etc) of your little rugrat, then what say we talk child support?
Here's what you can expect from me with respect to your kid. If some other kid starts a fight, I'll break it up, someone tries to snatch your kid, he/she is gonna have hell to pay, your kid is lost/scared/needs help, they'll get it cuz its simply the right and proper thing to do. But its still solely your job to raise your kid.
If I run an arcade, I may choose to have an "adult content" section for older teens or adults with stuff I think is a little much for younger kids (or maybe so those people can simply avoid the hassle of dealing with little kids). But it should be my choice, just like its the parent's choice to let their kid into the place, escorted or not.
I'm sure all you parents have checked with the parents of your child's friends to see if there's a gun in the house, did you bother asking about copies of GTA, etc. I don't know about you but I believe there are far more game systems in home than there are arcades, it hard to even find an arcade these days actually, at least around my home.
You chose to raise a kid, now you have to accept the job, keep track of them and what they are doing. While your at it, keep them off my lawn.

Remember, Georgia is the place that made/wanted to make it illegal to have an email address of anything other than your real name. Compuserve anybody?
Very dangerous, you go first.
Nah, sorry. How about MS-Dos, PC-Dos, DR-Dos? None of those were infringements were they?
Actually, I'd LOVE a cheap, small (10" - 13") LCD, I need something to mount in my car.
Yeah, I'm a geek. Sue me.

I find this remark very curious:
"When you buy the disc, you buy the rights to play the movie, not to copy it"
Curious because its technically correct, I'm not paying them a dime for the right to copy it, its already a right that I have. Its called "Fair Use".
