No, not at all, 802.1q trunking allows you to create multiple vlans, and run them over one cable. One cable can carry two vlans, the phone peels off the voice vlan, and the inline pc get's just the data vlan

  8. Re:I'm tired of the euphemisms on Vista SP1 Released to Manufacturing · · Score: 1

As a person who's transitioned from "Engineering" to "Sales" (Read: I'm a Sales Engineer, I design what the other Engineers will implement) I've found that the differences i n language aren't a matter of incompetent vs. competent, but rather, different modal operators of persuasion. A simple analogy, would be the difference between "book smarts" and "street smarts". The language of marketing is all about persuasion. I suggest reading a copy of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion By Dr. Robert B. Cialdini. It's not that they don't have a clue, they're influencing a particular point of view. You may disagree on whether the fundamentals of the technology are good or bad, however, the influence that's exerted determines ultimately what is successful. There are examples throughout history (see Betamax vs. VHS) where a technologically superior product loses. Microsoft is an expert in marketing and persuasion, like it or not, they're very competent at what they do in that specific arena. And the software that they work, tends to work at least decently on the 3rd iteration or so, which apparently is good enough for most people.

As a sales engineer, I've noticed that folks in IT are woefully underskilled in these areas. They may approach upper management and state "We need a new backup system" and fail to properly articulate their point, because it is self evident to them, and they don't speak the language of marketing. Everyone in IT would be well advised to take a communication or public speaking course. You may just learn something if you expand your horizons.

While this post may in itself, be largely offtopic, it's important to understand that the success or failure of Vista is going to be largely through how it's perceived by the masses, including corporate culture.

Because of reports like this, I went through great lengths to order FiOS and retain my copper line. The online ordering service was no help, they advised me to call the busienss office. I spent the better part of an hour on the phone trying to convince them do to give me just FiOS internet, being bounced to technical support from the sales team. Eventually, I explained that I realized the install of FiOS required two steps

1.) Install fiber optic connection to the hosue
2.) Cut and remove copper to the house.

If they could just do step 1, and skip step two, I'd pay for the whole thing. Tech support transferred me back to sales after speaking to them. I have the downside, that since it's not tied to my copper line, they claim not to be able to invoice bill, and require a credit card. I advise turning on FiOS as a new service to cut through the BS.

As a side note, I was able to talk shop with the installer and get him to avoid doing many of Verizon's practices, like requiring that the service be run of Coaxial cable, necessitating the use of Verizon's Cable router. I had him run the connection Cat5 instead, and I can use my ASA firewall instead of their router. He explained that the sales staff gets paid commission in order to have the copper cut, and that's why it took me so long to get through a sales person in order to just order the FiOS internet.

I must be some sort of weird techno-luddite, not because I'd want to keep DSL, but I happen to think that the POTS line is a heck of a lot more reliable than the fiber optic service, especially for things like 911, and uptime in a power outage. The CO power generation systems are far more reliable than anything running out of my house.

Your logic is flawed, you can't go from the specific to the general. Your father may have been unsuccessful at applying a particular belief structure to you, but that only speaks to his competence. Just because your one experience with NLP wasn't successful, doesn't mean you can write off the whole subject.

A better analogy would be the "paper cert" phenomena made popular by Microsoft. I'm sure most slashdotters have had experience with people who paid for certifications, but don't have enough real world experience to make things work.

An interesting, and some would say sleazy, take on NLP can be found at Ross Jeffries' http://www.seduction.com./ I've found NLP, is really not about specific language patterns, but more on the ability to adapt to the feedback you're getting from someone you're working with.

Am I the only one who paid attention both in science and logic classes? Science doesn't PROVE anything. Scientific theories are never proven, they simply hang around until you get the next one.

Proof rests in the realm of pure logic. In science, you're always attempting to disprove a given theory. It's never absolute.

While I don't support the teaching of evolution in science class, I also do not support in teaching a given scientific theory as fact. It's only true as far as we can test it, and since we can't do infinite testing, calling any scientific theory "law" is ridiculous
