  1. Heh, almost funny... on Excite@Home May Have To Call It Quits · · Score: 1

How their stock went down almost as quickly as the upload speed on cable modems.

I think/hope Charter is next. To go from 200K/s to 128K/s was ok...but to say a year later oh we ment 128k/s (14K/s)...bastards.

Does anyone else, besides me, see this as completely DEFEATING the purpose of broadband?

In order to make the most people suffer you must organize one or more of the following:
    Crime, religeon and politics.

  2. Interesting, but all is not lost. on AMD To Stop Production Of 486, 586 & K6 Chips · · Score: 1

I would think if this were the end of the world for the embedded market that Texas Instruments, Motorola, Sony would not be options. The first thought that came to me was what about hypertransport? Is that not planned/aimed at most of the markets they are concerned about...not just the embedded space, but the server/workstation arena? Also, would it not be easy to re-tool a duron/athlon chip by itself, under clocked (shudder...more powerrrr!!!) an most likely cachless? I mean a full blown processor is not needed, but more than the average IC is? Maybe my perspective is skewed, but I am sure the "moving forward" phrase would enter the picture sooner or later. Moose. What is loose at the moment, alex?

  3. Last time the M word was used on me... on Multitasking Harmful To Productivity · · Score: 1

I was working out in Duluth, Ga...the Initials
of the Company , ironically enough, were I.E.

Anywho, the guy in charge of the area I was in
before I went to the QA dept said
"you need to learn to multitask"... I looked him
right in the eyes and in all seriousness asked
the eternal question "pre-emptive or co-operative?" the look I got was a total "huh/WTF" kind of look.

Strange thing is, I think that day I realize that a buzzword is something that the user of the word/phrase is usually clueless as to its meaning. Reminds me of my young son's forays into the four letter word catagories.
Had a 50/50 chance of getting it right.

  4. DooM was 2.5D IIRC on Five Years of Quake · · Score: 1

Don't know if it had been posted or not, but, yes doom was 2.5d. You did have 2 dimensional aspect including height, but, recall that height was not "true" height. I.E. You could not jump over a character (I'm thinking those damn demons) if they were 500 stories below you. Yes you were "above" them, per se, but the "character's column" was blocking you. Frustrating, but Heretic took care of the "column" problem. Only thing was, that was it. You could jump/fly over stuff, but there was no depth to the characters. Maybe Heretic was 2.75D? You had 3d movement, but the characters were 2.5d...humm, interesting. Moose. Academic/Prof. : "In theory..." Slimy Car salesman: "Trust me...."

  6. Ping, latency and skill... on How Fast Too Slow? A Study Of Quake Pings · · Score: 2

All of these factors come into play. I used to be real into Kingpin (game/grfx wise between Q2 and q3) multiplayer and a lot of what is said is true: A) you get used to HPB/LPB's (or being one) B) Suckage/llamas'ness shows thru regardless of ping. My best laff was this: Kingpin, 8bit color, P200 64M of memory, 8M voodoo2 with a 150'ish ping. I was doing so well with 2 other players I suggested they gang up and "hunt me". After they had had enough of a beating, one of them asked my system specs thinking I was running a screaming rig. His partner just let out with a "BWAhhhahahahah, you're kidding, right?" He told his buddy it was funny, seeing as he was running "A dualie 650, NT with the latest directX and a TNT2 and smp enabled on the game and STILL could not beat me with help"... The guy's reply to his bud, was STFU. Worst part of all this was I considered myself an average player. Players that could make me cry kept telling me to get a better rig seeing as what I could do on a dinky p200. Heh, I wish. I still got that p200 (i think it is on its 6th or 7th year...oye).

  8. No Kidding. on Are Kids Turning Your Kids Into Killers? · · Score: 2

It all comes down to basic animal psychology.

You kick a dog often enough, it will either
crumble mentally, or turn on you.

I (and I am sure other /. readers as well) have
gone through the same thing to varied degrees.
You entertain thoughts at a certain stage of
retalating, then, if the stress is bad enough...
you act. I got to the point of being 3 seconds
away from knifing a 6'4 18-year-old bully in
my high school days...but thank god the principle
was one of those that cared and put an end to that
    kind of BS real quick.

We need school admins with a clue. Plain and simple.
