  2. The name-your-price is terrible anyhow... on Priceline & Expedia Patent Battle Heats Up · · Score: 3

I went to priceline.com to check out plane tickets earlier this year as I was planning a trip, and I was totally turned off by the way they wanted to conduct the transaction.

There was no way I was going to name my price, enter my credit card number and automatically buy the ticket before I even was saw what airline it was on. Priceline gave me no way to just shop around for prices - you name the intenerary, name a price and bam, you are charged and you have no choice about anything after that. So, I went to travelocity, where I could actually shop around a bit.
I think this name your price thing is lame, and I can't imagine why anyone would want to fight over it. Especially since they are planning on extending the paradigm to commodities such as groceries - who wants to haggle over a can of soup? Or lose out becaue they were willing to pay more than the going rate, without ever knowing the going rate?

Anyway, this is another case where MS shines in lack of originality. Have they ever thought of anything for themselves? Good ideas or bad, I don't think they have.

  3. physical stores vs. online on Jeff Bezos Named Time Person of the Year · · Score: 1

I recently priced a series of papaerbacks for a gift for a friend, and shipping from any of the online bookstores would have been about 20% of the total price in the end, which wasn't okay at all. If any store in town had them, I would have gladly driven over, bought them the same day, and paid no shipping other than my own transportation.

I was very impressed with sndconfig - it got my sound card working perfectly , instantly.

Why does the red hat installation not mention it at all? They could at least mention it, and say "it doesn't work for every card but would you like to try to configure your sound card now?"

I was fortunate enough to remember the sndconfig command from a slashdot forum discussion a long time ago. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known about it at all.

Also, it everything is so large and cartoony, I just can't stand Q3, especially compard to UT. I think Id needs to try putting out something original... If they make aquake 4 that is still all about rockets, red armor, quad and railguns , I am going to go insane with disgust. Curved surfaces... um, wow, thats great. i think it's more like Quake 1.5. But besides comparisons with Quake 3, I really enjoy Unreal Tournament. I wish them the best.

Anyway, yes - the moderation system is far from perfect. Some good posts get marked down, some fabulous gems go ignored because they are buried in hundreds of comments. I do agree with what he is trying to say, sort of. He just chose a very rude way of phrasing the statement. People should login when they have something to say.
