    um, actually, im not using windows at all..

    but my father is, and he had the problem you describe how to fix , so I'll try it.

    lots of the time, though, when i want to press the power button, it is becasue windows has microsofted out, and there is no chance it is going to respond to anything, let alone 'automatically shutdown', im afraid.

    Does Microsoft invent ANYTHING>?? Or at least develop it themselves??
    At this list there is a list of all the products and companies that MS has purchased rather than just imitating, and practically every single thing they own is on that list. Such 'innovation'!

    Also, the sheer amount of things listed in the '99 secion there is truly disturbing.

    im surprised to say that that post make sa couple of good points.
    True, Linux opens up people who are used to windows to the whole world of Unix.
    If I had a $50,000 server, like sun sells, I would not be running linux on it. And, yes, the lack of multithreaded IP thing is a big drawback for large servers, i imagine.

    BUT MINDCRAFT? PC-MAGAZINE? fuck that.
    the mindcraft test illustrated only that when microsoft chooses a platform and tests to compare NT to Linux, they choose the ones that make them look good.

    If it had been comparing dynamic content, the test would have been a lot different than the static comparison, for one. For two..

    I agree that they could be for real, and not just sucky, money grubbing, soulless scum. I pondered this myself. I don't think they do deserve our trust, however.
    If you recall, or would like to research the past articles about this on Slashdot and other news sources, the CEO of LinuxOne has a pretty shady past. Also, they filed for an IPO practically as soon as they could. Mr. CEO's last offering went down to something like 15 cents a share after it was clear that his company wasn't worth anything... Now, he has a new company, with Linux plastered all over it.

    In an unrelated note,
    if every distro changed KDE in the ways you describe, I really don't think there would be anything wrong with that. Different color scheme?... um..okay, so what? Different sized icons? There goes the user friendly, consistent interface. I think there is room for a green shaded KDE in the world.

    The GPL places no restrictions on what you describe... I can compile it, I can sell commecrcially, I can file for an IPO, as long as I distribute the source... Being underage and released from the contract wouldn't be an an advantage, unless you are a 17 year old that has a bunch of source that you don't want to share, which wouldn't be very exciting.

    We don't really need to keep MS around - we just need to make sure that no sinlge copany ever dominates the linux/bsd market to a great extent after linux or bsd has achieved world domination.
    If there are 15 companies sharing the market, no problem. Having BSD and Linux both around will help that happen.

    We still need MS as a lowest common denominator, maybe, or at least a something to laugh at.

    Though this had been going on for a while with gas jets and other devices, the lightbulb revolutionized the lives of millions of people because no longer were their lives absolutely controlled by the natural cycle of light and day. If I had to choose between having a computer and having a lamp, as bright as my monitor is, I would pick the lamp. Now, if I had to pick between society having computers and society having light, hmm.. that is a tough question.

    The beta wasn't the point. Presumably, they have fixed many of the problems you described with the release. If not, then certainly they should be reviled. Anyhow, I think your information needs to be prefaced with a disclaimer that you are talking about a BETA version of the product under discussion, and not the full release, which is what the announcement was concerning.

    Than I would toss Macromedia Flash out!
    While it is a decent product, I really prefer the interface of Adobe products to those of Macromedia. Having used Dreamweaver, Firecracker and Flash next to Photoshop, Illustrator and GoLive, I find that Adobe puts together products that are more streamlined and polished. Maybe I'm just used to their style.
    As far as open sourcing Flash, people could check out OpenSWF.org.

    I have thought for a while that with the depth of market penetration that Flash has, it would be nice to have it as a sort of standard so that other companies could be involved, because web streamable vector graphics are a lot bigger than just Macromedia.
    I do respect the work they have done, and don't want to see the excluded from reaping the benefits of their work. We all need a vector graphic standard, though, and it isn't for the better to have one company to have complete control of anything, as Macromedia has now with the delivery of vector graphics.

    I hope they don't Sun on this one (we want a standard, no, we want us to control it, but we want a standard).

    People have been cheating in the original Quake for quite a while.. that has made even more annoying and irritation that the game was to begin with. Open Source quake might make it a bit easier, but there has been so much cheating in quake already - big deal.

    When i tried, it does indeed get redirected to lc2.law5.hotmail.passport.com and claim that it can't be found.

    It wasn't until linux came about that being a computer user/nerd became friend or foe for the choice of your operating system. I remember the good ol' days when it was how you could network, program, code, and be yourself..

    you seemed to miss Amiga Vs. PC and Mac sentiments, the Mac vs. Ibm feelings, the whole UNIX vs. NT idea, DEC vs. IBM vs. Control Data, some people are Palm Pilot vs. CE fanatics. There are many other instances where people were and are fanatical about operating system choice. It is nothing new.

    The "evil empire" doesn't tell me who i can or shouldn't buy from.

    Oh yeah? How uneducated you are indeed. They sure have tried to tell IBM, Dell, Compaq, Gateway and everyone else who they can and can't buy from. Did you read the finding of fact against Microsoft? They sure were telling Apple who to buy from, and who do you think they were effectively dictating choice to? YOU, the consumer.

    Based on his previous record, i don't think this Chiou guy's company is too promising.. His last IPO, NetUSA, went from $7 to 63 cents a share?
    It is really too bad that people like this can try to cash in on something as wholesome as Linux. Also, it is very regretable that they got such a great ticker symbol, which could fool unaware people into thinking they are buying 'Linux', becasue there are a lot of heathens out there who think this Linux thing is a company they can buy into.

    I can't say for sure. He could have some great software in the making, he really could be developing those great 'propietary device drivers' and Chinese and Japanese versions, or this could be what it seems like it is : a scam to take advantage of the interest in IPOs like Red Hat's and VA's. I don't think someone should be filing for an IPO before they even have a product - what is it that we would be investing in? A plan to someday make a Distro? Their website does seem like they are serious, I suppose.

    But a Linux distro that runs under Windows misses the point entirely!!

    I believe that wasn't a mispronunciation, it was an outright insult to Linux advocates ... I've heard it called Loonix before, by people who want to imply that Linux is a 'fringe' OS that has fanatics and insurgents as its only supporters. Of course, you would have to be out of your mind not be bowled over by the amazing things Microsoft offers all of us!
    I don't know what his argument about up and coming competitors is, but hearing linux called that was highly irritating.
