  1. "New concept"??? on Concept PC 2001 · · Score: 1

"The new concept is that of wireless keyboard and mouse, and an 18" flat screen LCD monitor to top things off."

Oh, yeah, I've never heard of any of those things before. What a concept! They're still on the ol' cutting edge there at HP.

  2. Where do you want to go with my money today? on Passport's Pocket Picked · · Score: 4, Funny

  3. Re:What I'd really like to know... on Civilization III Is Out, And It Rocks · · Score: 1

Well, I really didn't NEED sleep or food or to go outdoors ever again. CivII pretty much took me prisoner, it looks like CivIII will succeed as well.
Mac version NOW!!! I want, I want, I want!!!
p.s. I totally agree with the "multi-player is required" posts.

  4. Re:Why no USB then (Apple PC required)? on The Guts Of An iPod · · Score: 2, Funny

    Reply from Apple:
Thank you for your interest in the iPod. We appreciate the input of users such as yourself. Unfortunately, we have no plans to support your platform at this time. We would like to direct you to our online Apple Store and our selection of the popular iBook laptops.

  5. Toshiba drive price on The Guts Of An iPod · · Score: 0, Redundant

Note the MSRP of a PCMCIA version of the Toshiba HD is $399 just by itself. Apple's pricing of the iPod doesn't seem so outrageous now.

  6. Don't be too cynical on Is Your Elected Official Really Listening? · · Score: 2, Informative

Don't assume that because you receive an automated response or no response at all that no one took the time to read your letter. Sending out personal responses to constituents takes a tremendous amount of time and manpower in otherwise very busy congressional offices.

Also, I would not expect to receive a personal reply from someone who does not represent your state or district. They have a hard enough time keeping up with mail from their own constituents.

Finally, the medium does make a difference. E-mails and those pre-printed postcards that get sent to congress tend to get less attention than more formal printed letters. Make it look good and t will get noticed.

  7. Shut up already Katz! on The Demise Of The Net Magazine · · Score: 1

I think it was Winston Churchill who said that a fanatic is someone who can't change his mind and won't change the subject. That fits Jon Katz to a tee. He sees manipulation of the (always helpless) individual mind everywhere by any (always evil) corporation with more than 100 employees. Apparently, business success automatically makes you a threat to civilization itself. His analyses of relatively small events like the closure of these very small businesses (most small businesses of any kind do fail, Mr. Katz) begin with his preconceptions of corporate evil and conveniently ignore more relevant facts like lack of revenues. Get a grip on reality!

  8. Blowing this way out of proportion on The Return of Microsoft · · Score: 1

Microsoft is no different from any other successful corporation as to whom it is answerable - its customers and its shareholders. That requirement is a greater control on how it does business than any government regulator or federal judge could ever be. Katz' pathetic snivelling echoes what thousands of other have-nothings and do-nothings have been spewing for over a century. They conveniently forget that oil and railroad barons built the US west of the Appalachians, that AOL played a major part in the making the internet what it is today by making it usable for millions of people who otherwise would not have bothered to try to figure out the net, and that Microsoft helps make peoples' work products compatible across different companies and offices. Katz and his ilk rave that they don't play fair, but they're whistling in the wind. Your rant does nothing to earn someone a living or boost tech investment. If you don't like it, Katz, then come up with something better. I'll be using Word to get my work done until you do that.

  9. You're right on Napster Spurs CD Sales; Gets Sued Again Anyway · · Score: 1

In addition, the questions about whether downloading tracks had prevented them from buying a CD don't specify that it would be in every (or nearly every) case. Answers could be interpreted as "In one case, I bought the album anyway, but the other 2000 times I didn't." This is a poorly written survey and even worse interpretation of the results by the author of the article.

  10. Yeah, but.... on Apple Threatens Open Source Theme Project · · Score: 1

If your market share had been dwindled down to "irrelevant" by cheap knock-offs (Windows) you might be nervous about people again trying to copy your stuff, too. If you had spent millions of dollars and a decade in development for your new OS, you might not want a cheap copy on the market the next week either. I can't blame Apple too much for wanting to protect the uniqueness of their massive investment for a month before someone copies it and gives it away for free. Give the Apple programmers a chance to enjoy the credit they deserve.
