> he traded immortality for the knowledge of good and evil. Essentially for a loss of innocence. Pretty crappy trade if you ask me.
You think that's bad? The Highlander fought and beat every other immortal to gain "the prize". What was "the prize" you ask? He lost his immortality and gained mind-reading. That's like picking the goat behind door number 3.
This is like arguing if Superman can beat Spiderman. Yeah, accepting that superheros are real and superpowers are real and the Marvel universe is real and the D.C. universe is real... ok Superman can beat Spiderman.
I want to love emacs org-mode. It does everything I want. It should be my complete ultimate environment that satisfies all of my organizations needs. Every time I start building an organizational system with tool 'x' I always end up implementing org-mode, badly.
But I hate it. I find it unusable. I really wish I could use it. It sounds so perfect on paper.
Heh, if you think that is vile, try reading Bacigalupi's 'People of Sand and Slag'. He's a brilliant writer, but he always gets under my skin and makes me sad for human nature. For a real fun treat, read Vicker's 'The Featherless Chicken'. http://www.strangehorizons.com/2005/20051024/featherless-f.shtml
I didn't know Australia had a terrorist problem. I never heard of any plane being hijacked or blown up or any attempts or any other terrorist activity.
Would some Aussie please fill us in... what is this for?
> Once someone has a foothold away from Earth, we'll have a new frontier to expand, on which existing governments will be largely powerless
Existing governments are already largely powerless, in that their decisions are being made by large multi-national corporate interests. Don't think for a second that those multinationals would have a bit of trouble dictating what happens on the Moon or anywhere else.
That reminds me of a conversation I overheard on a city bus: Woman1: "My son got in trouble at school for fighting." Woman2: "What did you do?" Woman1: "I slapped him upside the head and told him don't you NEVER hit anyone!"
Mod this up. Congress doesn't even try to hide their corruption these days.
And this is how SOPA/PIPA will play out: A new version will be introduced just after the elections that includes exemptions/protection for the big players like Google and Facebook. This version will be passed no matter how much "the people" scream, as long as congressional donations aren't in jeopardy.
Then why did the City of New London, Connecticut use eminent domain to take away people's homes and give it to a private developer for some expensive condos?
I'd bet you aren't allergic to the corn in Doritos popcorn etc because it's genetically modified, rather that you are allergic to those things BECAUSE THEY AREN'T FOOD. They are so heavily processed that you may be allergic to any number of chemicals that those food-like substances are subject to during their processing.
So, in essence, none of the "immortals" was immortal. All but one would be killed by "the one" and "the one" would lose his immortality.

Heh +1 Motie!

Oh Perl, what CAN'T you do?!

We almost got the value of PI changed: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/805/did-a-state-legislature-once-pass-a-law-saying-pi-equals-3
> Now if you can lower the speed of light....
With the right lobbying we can change any speed limit.
> Are you the kind of person that loses a pistol and forgets to tell anyone?
As we've seen recently, even if you are the kind of person that loses a child and forgets to tell anyone you may get off.
"We are now descending into level 5, child porn and snuff films. Please put on your hazmat suit and goggles before entering level 6..."
-1 to me. I don't get the reference.
If they can make themselves immune to insider-trading laws, you think a little thing like TSA strip searches will affect them?

Of course not. They will pick 5 random participants and completely F up their lives as a visible warning to all the sheep.
Then just delay releasing the source code until March 4th. Problem solved.

Pretty far off?
Then why did the City of New London, Connecticut use eminent domain to take away people's homes and give it to a private developer for some expensive condos?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelo_v._City_of_New_London
In the end the people lost their homes and the developer gave up the project and turned it into a garbage dump.
You can't make this stuff up.
Apparently not you.
Tor, is that you?

You let me know how that works out when you tell your wealthy congressman about your idea.
Or the poor schmucks whose birthday is during 'xtra'?
