Remember in the 80's the government supplied easy loans to the farmers in the US. It was only about 5 years later they were going back to the same farmers and foreclosing on their farms and auctioning off whatever they could. Giving out money to solve business problems has never worked in the long run with examples throughout history. The whole farm crash stated earlier may have been averted by helping adjust the prices they got at market instead of squeezing them until their eyes popped followed by some cash to smooth it over. This whole bail fiasco is destined to blow up in the face of the following administration and the only real victims of the short sighted solution are the tax payers. It's been write a long time since we have seen any politician who has insight or forethought beyond their term in office. The de facto thinking these days seems to be what can I get out of it without getting caught. Even the getting caught part has become secondary in many cases.
I agree completely the building of a hybrid SUV and excitedly proclaiming it gets 20mpg is insane. The big three have repeatedly purposely built substandard death traps every time the government imposes fuel economy and emissions standards. The cars of today don't get any better mileage than a well tuned car of the late 60's and early 70's. Does anyone remember the old Chevy small block V8's that would make the car jump off the road and still got 20+mpg and without driving like a typical teen of the time would get over 25mgp.
The only advise I can offer is, if you are not getting satisfaction from your work now. Find something new NOW or 15 years down the road you will still be stuck in this S$#@ hole occupation wishing you had done things different years ago. I've been doing IT for 27 years and the thrill has long gone. Stuff I worked on developing 20 years ago has been repackaged over and over again and called the latest great thing. This industry has completely gone to hell. The crap coming out of Microsoft has created an industry full of incompetents who can create crap code with VB and call it production while the upper level incompetents think its wonderful and won't fund any real projects.
I think your first paragraph hit the problem on the head. I originally came across this type of snobbish behavior at Yale in the high energy physics department about 25 years ago. The best way I and describe it is there are two types of experts. Those who know there stuff and are ready to share and those who are self proclaimed experts who will take every measure possible to conceal there incompetency. Unfortunately with the online community we seem to run into many of the later. As a community we need to be more patient with noobies and encourage the use of Linux.
Even though they are disclosing the fact that they are fakes and yes is may be a dishonest vendor who passes them as real. The fact that there is no legitimate purpose for remarking the chip shouldn't be ignored. Counterfeiting is counterfeiting trying to legitimize it by openly saying your doing it just compounds the crime. This is really taking things back 30 years to the crap quality items coming out of asian countries and being sold for cheap. If you don't think this stuff is reaching the US just shop at Wal-Mart and try to find something not made overseas.

Don't get too excited if Microsoft were to die, which won't happen who knows what tyrant would take it's place. Be happy with the devil you know.
What viable products?

First intel chips, now windows. What's the point of buying an apple. It's like ordering a steak and dipping it in sh@#.
