  1. Re:Too much? on BeOS for the Internet: BeIA · · Score: 1

I think the attitude of Be towards multi-user is that the OS is meant to be a workstation, not a server product of any kind. I remember reading a comment from Jean-Louis Gassee about this, and that's basically a paraphrase of his statement.

  2. Database-like filesystem on BeOS for the Internet: BeIA · · Score: 1

The 'database-like' filesystem with special attributes is not new to BeIA. BeOS's current filesystem supports the special file attributes, and was designed to be a database.

Actually, an ex-Apple employee developed the filesystem while at Apple, but nobody thought it was very interesting. Nobody except Be, that is! I can't remember the fellow's name who deveoped it, but I remember reading about him in Scot Hacker's 'BeOS Bible.'

  3. Mozilla on BeOS on Mozilla M13 (Alpha Version) is Out! · · Score: 1

Has anybody tried Mozilla on BeOS yet? I started running Be over the weekend, and just noticed today that Mozilla is available for that platform.

  4. @Home newsfeed on @Home Gets the Usenet Death Penalty · · Score: 1

The @Home newsfeed is practically useless anyway. The amount of articles and the retention time in some groups (rec.music.makers.guitar for example) pales in comparison to what you can get from a Remarq NNTP server. Example - I have a Remarq subscription, but I sometimes retrieve articles from @Home's servers just to see if they've improved. @Home will return ~800 headers for certain groups vs. ~3000 from Remarq for the same group. Pathetic.

  5. Open Source alternative on Metrowerks Putting Linux on Hold · · Score: 1

I've been pretty satisfied with Code Crusader. It looks and acts a lot like CodeWarrior, and is very stable. I don't know how well it would scale up to larger projects, but it's worth checking out.

Better yet, try http://edge.fireplug.net for a free, ThinLinux-based firewall, NAT and router package. Works great on a 486 w/12MB RAM. It boots from a floppy so you don't even need a hard drive.

I've had mine running for eight months with no problems whatsoever.

  7. I am a perverted consumer! on Perverts and Consumers · · Score: 1

This reminds me of that 'news' story on Dateline or some other 'news' show where they were whining that eBay should be responsible for the actions of the sellers and ought to look out for the dumbass buyer.

The way I see it...would you go to a flea market and hand someone a thousand bucks who says they will send you a computer in a few weeks? eBay is the same damn thing. People think it's somewhat more nefarious because it's on the internet, which everyone knows is evil, and brimming with people trying to steal you wallet and your children.

The government should stay the hell out of it. If I want to order questionable merchandise online while watching porn babes getting fucked in the ass, that's MY business.

  8. Unfortunately, this is typical. on Sony claims of Artist's Name URL For Life · · Score: 3

I've worked for a major record company, and this doesn't surprise me in the least. A lot of newer bands will do just about anything to 'get the deal' since they're usually very young, eager and sometimes naive. They're so taken with being catered to and treated like stars that they don't realize the reality of having it all yanked away from them when their next CD fails to move enough units.

I'm really hoping that the whole MP3 thing (or whatever format is next) will serve to stick it to the major record companies in a big way.
