    I think you are referring to "blind" faith. Like delusional ideas about oneself. The most common one seems to be: "what I can comprehend is the limit of all truth"

    Actually, I do believe one thing: pure cynicism is the highest form of enlightenment.
    Generally, the idea that cynicism and intelligence are directly proportional is true. But, this only applies to "mental" gymnastics. There are other facets to our reality - one cannot be cynical about love or beauty, or one finds oneself pretty dang cold, lonely, and bitter in this world of ours.

    The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics only applies to *closed* systems. This creationist "argument" was torn apart as soon as it was uttered.

    I guess we'll see if the universe is a "closed" system then.

    BTW - You are a man of greater leaps of faith than me. Unfathomable.

    You were there, were you? Maybe you can explain something to me. How long was the first day? Where did the building materials come from? Doesn't it take crazier faith if you claim the universe spontaneoulsy came into existence and assembled itself in such a way as to have intelligent life, without containing the intelligence in the first place? (i.e. Things getting more organized over time into complex biological systems all by themselves). That flies in the face of the law of entropy, which says basically that stuff left to itself gradually falls apart and becomes more disorganized and more random over time. It takes effort to keep things running.

    The only code I have to work with that's like that is a jungle of pseudo-OO spaghetti, full of 500-line-long case statements and loops. It's horrifying.

    Yep, it's icky, but the alternative is burying the complexity into non-generalized class methods and data structure, so that the apparent complexity (looking at a single method) is low. Of course, the complexity of the code should match the complexity of the problem being solved and not be WORSE. We have all come across overly complex code - since programmers are so smart , and have no trouble understanding how this spaghetti works..... The reality is: the smarter the programmer, the simpler the solution.

    I work with device control and image processing, and simply have to deal with an incredible amount of complexity with the cleanest structure possible. It usually takes a few iterations to refactor the code into something generally maintainable. Alas,

    I use 4 myself, been coding in C/C++ since 1987.
    A 2 space tab is too small to see the relative indents over several lines of code, most of which seems to be nested between 5 and 7 levels deep for the real guts of it.
    And a tab size of 8 is way too wasteful.

    I do use a headset when I can and it helps. BTW it isn't psychosomatic or stress, since I also have a problem when I am in the car w/ my wife and she is on the cell and holds it between us. After a few minutes, I usually ask her to switch ears and hold it toward the window. The effect seems to grow over time and it takes about 3-5 minutes for me to notice.

    I used to think it was the straining due to trying to hear clearly and such, but the evidence doesn't seem to point that way.

    You are right about that. If cell phones really did the damage they say, we would be seeing a whole lot more smoking guns.

    However, I cannot talk on a cell phone very long because it causes the muscles in my face to spasm and/or hurt - not a sharp pain, but noticeable. It was WAY worse with the 800 Mhz phone than with my 2.4 GHz phone, but there definitely is an effect. I limit my calls to about 5 min.

    I was replied to in another of the threads, which brought me back here. I wouldn't care, generally, but the kind of comment referred to is not something I would write - and I wouldn't want it associated with me, and rather than making a gigantic deal out of it, I made a smaller, more diplomatic and logical one.

    So you believe in creationism AND a multi-dimensional universe? Talk about eating from both ends of the sandwich.

    How can you say such a thing? How is it possible that God could manifest His Spirit at any time and any place if there were not other dimensions? How could we communicate with a God we cannot see? I agree the Bible is true. I agree there were an Adam and Eve, but the Bible does not say what Adam looked like the moment prior to God breathing His Spirit of Life into him. I make no claim regarding that. You should not either. It is irrelevant. Read all my posts in this thread and try and see where I am going, because your response doesn't help to illuminate the Truth. Christians should be more capable than that.

    My point was that
    A: God does not need to do any handwaving. and
    B: God does not need to design within any parameters - He created the container too, no hacking necessary.

    I agree that the goal of science is to get at the truth of the universe we live in, and to discover a scientific truth, such as E = MC**2, is to get a glimpse of God's infinite wisdom.

    My real points are that
    1. If Evolution does occur, it is not automatic,
    2. Science does not and cannot unravel the truth about everything - just that which we can measure, and
    3. God can actually speak something into existence (you can actually "hear" Him by looking at the results, but don't start thinking the creation "IS" the Creator).

    Do you accept that the universe has more than three dimensions? Or four if you include time?

    Most Physicists do, yet they can't "see" the other dimensions. The count is theorized to be in the upper 20s and there is one special dimension that is extremely thin and close to every point in our known universe. And we common folk can't make sense of it. So what.

    Personally, I have more faith in a God who can simply speak and have something happen than a God who has to submit to the "laws of Physics" and create a "system."

    I think the idea in this discussion is that computers on the net are "horribly dangerous crackpot contraptions" as you say, and should be "road worthy" and used in a "safe" manner. It's a very interesting discussion, because the basic idea is to have some rules for the common good. Not that I agree, but I am getting tired of some of the crap going on, like 1% good E-mail (even after spam filter), and having to scan my system for adware, spyware, and viruses... of course that will never go away, but it would be reduced significantly given some sort of legal restraint.

    Accidents people are having include: running stop signs, speeding, DUI, and road rage. The road isn't the cause of this, it is the road upon which this happens.

    What I would do instead would be to eliminate the profit motive for "caseworkers" and "foster" parents by reducing the amount of money available, but leave enough to feed and clean and dress the kids, and allow true "parents" take in these kids into their own family for a period of time. The rewards are mostly personal and not financial. There are plenty of people that love children out there. Not everyone wants to have a two-income corporate america life.

    As to the abortion issue - all human life should be treated the same regardless of age. The real issue is about "power" and the extreme left seems to want to hang on to as much power as they can. True democrats are either pro-life, or take no position.

    No - actually Philip was transported in Acts 8:39-40, so this concept is not un-Christian.
    However, I suppose trying to duplicate the process with man-made tools might be considered "witchcraft."

    No, the concensus is that gods don't exist, and that all religions are lies.

    The only reason that the "consensus" says this is because people don't particularly care for the alternative. Everybody wants to be their own god.
    Nice try, but that is a dangerous position to take, since you have no inherent power - and will wither and squirm like a worm when the time comes to set the record straight.

    In a worldwide survey asking each living human if each individual religion is true or false, no religion will ever get a majority asserting its correctness. Therefore, the people agree: all religions are wrong.

    God is not elected by the popular vote, as you suppose. But you are rather in the midst of a lifelong true/false examination in which you must get every answer correct. Or else.

    Here's your problem, though. Kerry is incapable of doing anything besides talking up a storm to get elected. He is a great politician, otherwise he wouldn't get 48% in the polls. Politicians, however, don't get any work done, because they are too busy trying to be popular.

    It's better to be right than popular.

    GW, on the other hand, is not a great politician, but he is a good leader and can get things done - even makes progress under extremely adverse conditions (make sure you don't blame him for the dotcom bomb and the corruption of Enron). Reducing the burden on the successful entrepeneurs keeps them moving forward creating jobs no matter what Kerry says. People making less than 200K per year don't hire very many people at all!
