Insightful? This comment is just a string of names.

None of the people named are cogs in a machine, and that is what the article is talking about. Fresh single cogs works longer for less money than older cogs.

Really? Because based on your ID# it would suggest that you haven't seen this before. Restricting access to certain material is not the same as discriminating against someone based on their religion or sexuality.

I'm afraid you got it backwards.

Binary file compatibility may not have been introduced until Mac Office 98, but Office 98 introduced features that were not present in Office 97. Office 2001 introduced features that were not present in Office 2000 and v.X introduced features not present in Office XP. Office 2004 is set to introduce features not present Office 2003. Typically features are available first on the mac version and then rolled into the next PC version.

Though one notable exception is the lack XMLcompatibility between to the 2 latest versions.

Lets look at that another way...

Really what you are saying is that you will organize your life around this one activity to make up for the weakness of the design. The point of the iPod's UI and the inclusion of Firewire is to make the process of using the hardware as transparent as possible.

Gee, maybe one morning you do decide to wipe the whole drive because you want to take a few ISO 's over to your friend who does not have high speed access. You do not hesitate because you know it will only takes a few minutes before work to replace your entire music collection. The hardware gets out of your way and lets you do things unlike the other "Jukeboxes"

The point of technology is to improve our lives, freeing us from mundane and repetitive tasks, I for one am not going to waste my time and resources by using technology that does not provide me that freedom.

It's ironic that most people in this forum want software to "be free" in some capacity but don't seem to want the same freedom from technology for themselves.

I agree that it is annoying, I wish we could find some way to boot into NetBSD on those old machines without first booting into the Finder, but Apple is a different company today. Apple is moving towards more open hardware/ software environment, but that sort of evolution will take time. Remember they have to keep in mind their stockholders interest. They may have not met the FSF definition of "Free" or "Copyleft", but they are moving in the right direction.

Additionally, your 14 number is for a very stripped down default MacOS. On anything above 8.6 You'll be hard pressed to find it using less than 30 megabytes. I've seen it get bloated all the way up into the 70s, expecially with MacOS 9.

I agree that 14 megs is a stripped down System Folder, but I have a G3 Powerbook running Mac OS9 using 20.8MB, a G3 minitower running 8.6 currently taking up 20.1 MB of RAM, and an iBook that has been running for about 2 weeks taking up 22.3 MB of RAM. These machines are not stripped down, and are doing a variety of tasks. If your machine is taking up more than 30 megs of RAM, then you are either doing something wrong or you have a huge memory leak in an application.
