I'm glad Microsoft is getting involved, competition is good thing. But as long as there is some improvement or change from version to version. I saw the http://www.google.com/ig website as a marked improvement over start.com. I currently dont see http://www.live.com/ as an improvement over Google's, though I understand that may not be the main purpose. The real interesting part will be if Google decides to up the ante and improve their portal or if they decide to leave it as it is, just happy that they distracted Microsoft long enough and had them use up resources to get to a point they were already at.
you can learn a lot of what might happen with an AOL/Google deal by looking at the reactions of people in the Detroit area (where I live) using a more realistic analogy of Daimler and Chrysler "merging", since it actually happened. The reactions where as follows:
- Everyone who owned a Chrysler vehicle read the newspaper and said "Thats great! I own a Mercedes!" - Everyone who owned a Mercedes vehicle read the paper and said "Oh crap! I own a Chrysler!"
I think that you will get similar reactions from a AOL/Google deal, with AOL shareholders high-fiving and Google shareholders going "What the fu-?"
My wife is working on getting her Masters in Library Information Sciences and I asked her what she thought about Google and their efforts. She actually is pretty much for their work, she thinks that speeding up searches through books will help people find the information and books they need a lot faster than the current method. Her main worry is that people are going to use this technology to bypass the book all together, and thereby possibly only getting a portion of the entirety of the book (seeing only one side of an argument, for example)
At the rate they're going, Google is bound to be realeasing an OS any time soon. And we will hear about it in Slashdot when it does. Then again six months later when Slashdot needs its daily Google fix and doesnt have a story available.
Not as easy as it sounds. The fourth through eight digits in the VIN are specific to the body style and other options (so a Crew Cab truck has different digits than a Super Cab). So if your old 77 Chevy Nova dies, the number may not be reusable on any current model. Also, if your car dies after only a couple of years and is then used on a vehicle it could cause havoc with DMVs, Insurance, and law enforcement. Finally, remember that the VIN is not only written onto the little badge on your dash or the car door, it is also on the engine, transmission, the frame of pickup trucks, etc. So your vehicle may die, but it's VIN could live on in a junkyard.
It makes sense, if you study epidemiology you will know that if an outbreak goes long enough it will burn itself out because it will either run out of people to infect (because of people's immunities or isolation of infected people to non infected) or the disease kills too quickly for enough people to be infected to keep the outbreak going. In this case the fact that the virus/exploit is taxing the distribution site is the equivalent of a population where people infected with a disease can not find enough uninfected people for the disease to continue.
How do you spell sig in Spanish? S-i-g. Not funny just informative.
When my computer was infected last weekend I tried all the removal tools, manual removal instructions, and even sacrifices to the evil M$ gods. Did no good, spent yesterday reloading my computer... Oh well, I think of it as my computer telling me it was time for spring cleaning.
The queen's outfits were definitely some of the most impressive costumes I had ever seen, the guy who designed/made them should get at least a nod from some awards organization.
Jar Jar's race is called the Gungans, and that shield stuff was pretty cool, still want to know what the hell is in the blue balls they were tossing.
The two scenes with the Jedi mind tricks were hilarious! The first one where that flying thing says "what do you think you are Jedi waving your hand like that?" and then trying to play the trick on the battle droids was also hilarious. One of my friends thought that they were stupid because they show the Jedi as weak. Personally I think that they show that the Force cant solve all the problems in the Universe (but a light saber can take care of the rest).
On the subject of Mito-chlorians, it doesnt seem to disheartening to me. In one of the book trilogys that is supposed to take place after ROTJ archaelogists in Coruscant find a device that measures the amount of "Force" in a person. Apparently the Empire used it to hunt and find Jedi. Luke then uses it to recuit new Jedis for training.
As to the whole disappearing Jedi thing, I think that the whole "Preparing for onciming death" is a very likely possibility. OB1 and Yoda had a moment to set their souls (or Force?) at ease. Another possible scenario (and correct me if I'm wrong) wasnt Qui-Jon just a knight and not a master? Yoda was a master and I think that by the time Luke meets OB1 in ANH, OB1 mustve achieved the same level.
Seeing the hack on the MIT hack website when their new president was sworn in (he had just come over from the University of Michigan) reminded me of a hack done here at the College of Engineering. The College is on a campus that is seperate from the rest of the University and has had a lot of renovations and new buildings in the last four years. One of these was a belltower that many students believed would mimic the clocktower that is located on the main campus and is an icon of the university. Many were dismayed though when they heard it was only going to play bells and no plans for a clock were ever made. Although many planned various cranks (placing small led watches all over the tower, etc.) one art student beat us all. One night he sat in the parking lot adjacent the tower and was able to project the image of a large VCR type digital clock on the side of it, flashing 12:00. People walking by at first didnt take notice, but busloads of students heading to the main campus did. No other hacks have been preformed on the tower, most probably because the first one was pretty hard to top or because they play stairway to heaven which isnt that bad at all.
Hey I dont really see it as Bush squatting 200 domain names, I see it more as someone who is or has some type of celebrity status just protecting themselves from possible injury. The law says that celebrities do have the right to protect their identity and their personae (Vanna White v. Samsung), even if they are not actually included in the advertisement or their voice is not used. So think of this as George's way of protecting his image from pages meant to harm his image.

P.S. Ford bought Land Rover not Rolls Royce.
Isnt a Sony Tape Walkman just the low-tech version of the mp3 recorders SIRI and XM are preparing to release? I still use mine for that purpose.

As long as it means I dont have to look at this gawdawful light grey on white color scheme again...

So I'm guessing the Republicans wont be able to count on the hacker vote this year?

I think in Empire it was a little dark in the carbonation chamber and Vader was slightly more concerned with other things at the time.
Also, there are a lot of protocol droids in the movies, could be that Vader was never formally introduced to C3PO.
